Haven't been on the boards much the last couple of months, but it's interesting to see both on the boards and off how peoples expectations are for this offseason. Everyone knew it was going to be a huge challenge to keep everybody, and obviously we didn't, but if we can resign cro we more or less have the same makeup of a team along with the addition of our rookies. That is a big victory, and pretty damn impressive IMHO. It seems really odd to think that way initially, and something we're not used to considering all the recent jets teams needed big upgrades. We didn't need the huge free agent splash, we just needed to keep the moving parts together and make minor tweaks where we can. of course the pass rush is a concern still, but hopefully the rookies up front will have an impact and calvin pace will have a bounce back year. people are concerned about burress, and it';ll probably take a few games into the season to get back into the groove, but we didn't have santonio for the first 4 games last year anyways and did just fine. maybe this didn't need its own thread, i haven't looked enough, but fuck it. if nmandi build a temple has 70 threads, this issue can have 1 (or 2 or 3).
Braylon and Plax are a lateral shift? Really? Plus they haven't replaced/signed Shaun Ellis, Brodney Poole, or Drew Coleman yet.
they replaced drew coleman with strickland. and yes, i think burress will be almost as good as braylon. the drop off will be marginal IMHO Brodney sucked for half the year, but stepped up in the playoffs. We'll find someone to fill that hole. you also have compensating factors like sanchez's improvement. if our defense didn't forget how to tackle all of a sudden, we'd have been in the superbowl last year.
I agree, we'll be fine if we resign Cromartie. If we'd been told a month ago that we'd be able to keep Holmes and Cro (which we have the money to do), and add Burress, everyone would've been thrilled.
Considering this team has made the AFC Championship game 2 years in a row, and was really the best team in the AFC last year despite a bad half on defense, then a similar off-season still makes the Jets one of the elite teams in the AFC and NFL.
First off, Drew Coleman signed with another team. So they didn't sign him yet, is, they aren't signing him. If they bring back Cromartie and Ellis, they did ok.
Exactly. Expectations were raised when the Aso sweepstakes went down to the wire. The reality - especially with a salary cap decrease for this year - was that the Jets were never going to be able to keep all three players. Having signed Santonio, it appears the plan was to try to pry Aso away. In the minds of the front office, ASO = Cro + Plax. It seems apparant now that there is something else going on with Braylon other than his alleged outrageous salary demands. The fact the guy isn't even getting a sniff from flies makes me think that his situation reeks worse that rotting meat. I think the DUI issue isn't the problem and that there really is a locker room issue + a possible league suspension issue that is causing the problem with this guy.
Wilkerson hasn't shown he's as good as Shaun Ellis yet. Eric Smith was on the team last year anyways - he doesn't replace Brodney Poole, he replaces Eric Smith. Strickland is a legit pickup though.
You know, i was thinking the same thing. Sidney rice, who was coming off major hip surgery, got a huge contract from the seahawks right away. The vikings still have a huge need at WR...and the redskins still have money to throw at somebody even though they signed santana moss. There's been no mention of anyone trying to pry braylon away. You would think a team like the Rams would have went after him
Assuming we get Cro I see a slight upgrade defensively for a few reasons: -Full season of Revis -Full season of Leonhard -New look defensive line (I know theyre rooks, but they have to automatically be better than what Gholston gave us on the line, and most likely have a better burst off the edge than Ellis or DeVito) -I thought Pool was overrated. He came on strong in the playoffs, but for most of the regular season he was invisible. I would gladly take Smith or Lowery over him. Offensively, if we don't get another receiver than I think we got marginally worse. I was hoping we would pick up Heap. Heap/Plax IMO would have been just as good an option as Braylon with the extra red zone target for Sanchez. There's still plenty of time left in free agency. Don't forget once camp starts, teams will have to cut some players. Maybe a good vet receiver gets cut. Altogether, I think too many fans here are panicking. We won 11 games last year. Lets let the rest of FA unfold.
^I'm still hoping that Cro goes somewhere else and we can use his money to sign Philip Buchanon and lure Zach Miller away.
Don't get why the Pats game colors everyone's view of Ellis last year. In every other game, he was a non-factor. I think he's toast.
I haven't followed Buchanon lately so I can't comment on him. Zach Miller is one of the most underrated TE/receiver in the NFL. Great hands and always puts up good yardage numbers/YAC even with the clusterfuck of QBs Oakland put out there the last few years.
I didn't read the post, but I agree 100% with the title. People have gotten too spoiled upgrading the team with big names every off season the last few years. Last year's team was absurdly talented and made it to the AFCCG with not much chemistry, an almost impossible Indy/NE/Pitt road, and a 2nd year QB. This team still easily has enough talent to win it all, it's just going to come down to how big of a jump Sanchez makes, hopefully leading to home playoff games. The 2011 Jets might be worse at Madden than the 2010 Jets, but they will be better at football.
Eh I think we still need to make a move or two other than resigning Cro/Ellis, our goal should be to win the division from the Pats and they probably got better than last year, we need a damn home playoff game for once, the AFC is tough enough without trying to win 3 straight road games to try to get to the SB.
Like Rex said, other teams in the league need to do their part. Patriots went 13-1 against everybody not named the New York jets. And 13-0 against a Non Ryan coached defense.
