Yup. This is what good teams do. They develop a core of good young players through the draft (Sanchez, Greene, Mangold, Dbrick, Revis, Harris, Keller, etc.) and you supplement those players with low/high risk high reward rentals through free agency.

Plax was my number 3 WR option after Braylon and Floyd. Hopefully we hear good reports of him being in shape and such moving forward.

Is Plaxico as good as Braylon at this point? No.

But this is all about not committing big money and a lot of years to a #2 receiver. I'm sure Braylon is asking for a lot of money and a bunch of years. Plus we get a guy who was great a few years ago, and now will be playing with a big chip on his shoulder. Not only is he going to try and shove it up the Giants ass playing in the same stadium as them, but he's going to want to play well and be on his best behavior so he can try and get 1 last shot at top dollar next year. Will that top dollar be coming from the Jets? I doubt it.. but hopefully we get 1 year of good production and then look for a long-term solution next year.

And the second clear thing to take from this is that they wanted to have more money available to commit to a corner long-term. And by that I mean Cromartie. They obviously prioritized the corner position more than the #2 receiver.

If we were gonna sink big long term dollars into the WR position Edwards would be a Jet. Not saying we're gonna have a rotating door at that position but we're not gonna get a #2 that commands more than $5 mil a year

  4. Truth is, Cotchery was a little underutilized as a #3. It seems he and Plax will both be more #2.5 WRs, complementing each other's skill sets. Short term, I can definitely live with that.

Seems like a lot for a guy we don't even know can play anymore.

Great post. I hope people don't forget how great Cotchery has been as a Jet. He IS a #2 receiver in his own right. He just got pushed aside last year because of Holmes and Braylon. That doesn't make his skillset any less important.

    Haha, this is hilarious.

Nobody knows what shape Plax is in. If Plax were able to step in and play like he did before, this is a no-brainer compared to what else is available and what we would have to pay.

Of course, we don't exactly know what shape he's in. But we do know he's a big red-zone target that is exactly what we need on paper across from Holmes and with Cotchery.

He's a great safety valve and knows how to work the sideline. He is someone I'd like to the Jets have on the field for every snap.

i think this is a good deal for what its worth, big target with similar atributes as bray, and will fill the void for a year.

the naysers and pessimists are going to be pleasantly surprised when it's all said and done. plax is in the best shape he's probably been in at least 5 years and has something to prove to the rest of the NFL. he's going to absolutely BEAST.

awesome pickup for the price. this is textbook low risk-high reward.

I'm okay with this signing. I would like to see James Jones in a Jets uniform.

Or maybe we've already drafted our future #2 WR: Jeremy Kerley

Rex should stick Revis on him for the entire practice.

I read that, I get that, but who cares what Plaxico says. If some team is trying to give me millions of dollars, I'm telling them I'm in the best shape of my life. We'll see how true that ends up.

Kerley was drafted to replace Brad Smith (meaning he'll never be higher than 3rd or 4th on the depth chart).

I like this move a lot more than if we'd signed Moss or TO. Still would have preferred someone younger with more upside but I guess it was obvious we were going the cheap route. Here's hoping for Jeff Fuller or Mohamed Sanu in next year's draft.
