As I said above, we've always known that someone else (probably the Texans) will end up with the highest offer, so there's no use freaking out now that a higher offer has been made. The Jets can probably go up to around $12 million/per and hope that the promise of NYC endorsement money / the chance to win a ring / start his bullshit acting career will be enough to get Aso to leave money on the table. If we don't get him, too bad. It would be amazing to have him and Revis in the secondary together, but it was always a long shot. If we can't bring Asomugha in, that's ~$12 million a season that we can use to target other guys--unlike Houston, we're in pleasant position of wanting Aso as a luxury and not a necessity. I do think that some of you are selling the Texans short though--they are not dog shit as HardHitta labeled them. If they add Asomugha then they will have an elite player at almost every level (Aso in the secondary, Cushing/Ryans at linebacker, Williams on the DL, Dre Johnson at receiver, Foster in the backfield, and Schaub isn't elite but he's a very good QB.) Plus the Titans and Jags are going nowhere fast and the Colts look like they're in decline to me, so there's a definite opening for Houston to make moves in that division. I do think they need to get rid of Kubiak though.
i very much disagree (respectfully) with that - not getting political but taxes are going nowhere but higher especially 1-2 years out. this amount of money translates into a hefty tax bill going forward for these guys. while we would all like to think the decision wont be based on tax - it very well could be a huge factor. with some players this has been an issue with the NY/northeast teams. i have often wondered why more players didn't take this into acct.
Holy shit, the tone on this site changed that drastically over a f*cking tweet? Aso will join the Jets....stop worrying already.
I'm gonna laugh at Houston when they 9-7 this year instead of 8-8 with Nnamdi I just want this thing over with, just choose any team except an AFC contender
By all accounts, the only way he'd sign with HOU is if they blow the Jets' offer out of the water. FWIW, Schefter is saying that he thinks the Jets are still the favorites, and that Nnamdi has indicated many times that he prefers going to NY. If HOU really is going all in , and makes an offer that Aso would be irresponsible to pass on...just tip your hat and move on. I'd be bummed, but I have faith in the FO to have reasonable back-up plans.
Exactly. He said he's willing to leave money on the table in order to win, but he didn't say how much. How much difference would make him not look like a money grabber if he decides to go to Houston? 2M? 4M?
Everyone needs to calm down with their FINE JOIN A CRAP TEAM YOU BIG JERK attitude. No one has been signed anywhere and he'll probably join the Jets.
If Aso signs with Hou for 14 mil then these other corners are going to want substantially more $$$ then they would have before - I say the hell with it, go all in and let's get our man.
All the Revis and Aso things would be ridiculous. On commercials, etc. Look at all the crap Revis endorses now.. he's all over the place.
The guy got paid in Oakland - no like this is his first go round -- a rare 2nd go round to collect a big check. He was overpaid for a losing Oakland team..think he wants to go to Texas and play second fiddle to the Cowboys on a team that has never reach 500? NY offers a lot more positives as a whole -- not just contract money wise.
The only person that would ever say <Team X> is "in the lead" is a scumbag agent. You either sign a contract or you don't. It's not the fucking 100 metres.
Good post. I would also (or is that aso ) add that another temptation for Aso is that the Revis + Aso combination could well be the NFLs best CB tandem ever in the history of the NFL, what player wouldn't want that.
Right. I'd be more pissed if the Jets broke the bank to get Aso leaving us in cap hell in upcoming years.
I would imagine that you get more money for having your face on a billboard in Times Square than you do in downtown Houston. Plus, the added exposure could have non-monetary value for a guy like Asomugha who supposedly wants to be an actor after football. But I don't really know, it would be nice if someone who works in marketing or PR could clear that up.
