Report: Titans to dump Vince Young on Thursday
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2011, 9:49 AM EDT

The Titans plan to trade or cut quarterback Vince Young. With only a few days to trade him before that $4.25 million roster bonus becomes earned, they’ll be cutting him instead.

Terry McCormick of TitanInsider reports that the Titans will dump Young on Thursday, the first day that player cuts may be made.

Young is intriguing because he has played well at times, with a couple of high-profile meltdowns. That’s prompted some (i.e., us) to wonder whether a different coach would be able to better shepherd Young through the rough spots.

Said a trusted media source who isn’t a Jeff Fisher guy, “It wasn’t Fisher. It was Young.”

Still, there’s also a coach who thinks he can be the guy to get the best out of a player with a high amount of potential. Given that there simply aren’t enough good quarterbacks to go around in the NFL, someone will take a chance on the guy whose tremendous performance in the 2005 BCS title game helped USC avoid the indignity of being stripped of two national championships.

Carolina and RB DeAngelo Williams reached agreement on a five-year, $43 million deal that includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

    Can't sign that beast.

The Panthers must be desperate to hit that cap floor:

Olindo Mare agrees to terms with the Panthers
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2011, 2:31 PM EDT
After spending plenty of cash on a couple of their own free agents, the Panthers have attracted someone from another team.

Per a league source, veteran kicker Olindo Mare will sign with the Panthers.

The deal, according to the source, is worth $12 million over four years, with a whopping $4 million signing bonus.

    For a kicker.

49ers let go of Nate Clements
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 27, 2011, 5:35 PM EDT

The 49ers continue to clear room for a possible run at Nnamdi Asomugha.

Matt Maicco of CSNBayArea.com reports that San Francisco has told cornerback Nate Clements that they will release him. It was long believed Clements needed to take a pay cut to return, and they didn’t work something out.

It’s the sensible move. It clears major salary cap space for a player that struggled to be a league average starter. If the 49ers want to upgrade at cornerback, they could also make a move for Bengals cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

Remember back in the day when Jets fans thought that losing out on Nate Clements was the apocalypse?

This franchise has come a long, long way.

    Wilson goes to the Skins:

Josh Wilson heads slightly south to Redskins
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 27, 2011, 6:39 PM EDT

The Redskins didn’t pilfer guard Marshall Yanda from the Ravens as planned, but they will take one of the Ravens’ cornerbacks.

Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reports that Josh Wilson will join the Redskins on a deal averaging $4.5-$5 million. We were impressed with Wilson last year; he was probably Baltimore’s best cornerback down the stretch in 2011. He ostensibly replaces Carlos Rogers in Washington.

The mid-level cornerback market is starting to thin out slightly with Drayton Florence and Wilson off the board. This is a strong sign the Redskins won’t go after any of the big cornerback names on the market.

The Ravens may up their efforts to re-sign Chris Carr now . . . assuming they aren’t getting into the Asomugha business.

UPDATE: Wilson’s deal is for $13.5 million over three years, with $6 million guaranteed according to Adam Schefter.

LOL you are exactly right about that! Best GM in the biz!

McGahee is a Jet-killer though, always has been, no matter what kind of season he's having.

Kelly Gregg needs to be brought in here. He is on the downside of his career, but re-uniting with Rex Ryan will give him a youthful step I'm sure. Plus we don't have enough guys with necks wider than their heads.
