Todd Heap was just released by the Ravens. Call it insufficient, but bolstering our TE ranks with a cheap, veteran tight end might slightly offset our wide out losses (if any). Kelly Gregg and Derrick Mason cut, too.
I'd also really like to see Damien Woody come back after seeing this: Ugh. "Not sure" is not good. Lie to me, Meat! LIE to me!
I'd say we've got a great shot at landing Kelly Gregg. As for the others, it will be interesting to see if any of these offensive players the Ravens are cutting are interested in playing for Rex.
Todd Heap would be a very good signing. The guy's been nothing but solid since he's been in the league - we need an all-around guy that pair with Keller. Mason will give someone a solid stop-gap. Kelly Gregg is 34 years old and we already have two nose tackles on the roster. Sione Pouha and Kenrick Ellis should take care of that spot.
Shit so I guess it looks like the Ravens are gearing up for a Aso bidding war. This could be good for us because I'd doubt they would sign back Josh Wilson if so. I'd love to have J. Wilson and Heap on this team.
Heap would be a great second TE that said, he can find a starting role somewhere. Gregg probably doesnt have much left, but Rex could get it all out of him for 15 snaps a game... Mason would be a great add if we lose Holmes and fail to acquire a younger replacement. Mason would be a great 1 year stopgap guy who would compliment Braylon well...
Mason = Cotch. If we had only Braylon, we need a home run threat to try an mimic what Holmes could do ( yes, I know, it's a he'll of an achievement to replicate that).
I won't argue that. But if Cotch takes his role on the outside Mason becomes the underneath guy working out of the slot. Mason runs a great slant route... Braylon can still be our vertical guy. I doubt Mason will sign on with a new squad anyways. Its probably baltimore or retire at this point for him. Heap would be the best signing for us of the bunch though.
I wouldn't mind Kerley and Mason switching slot roles but I'd rather have Cotch switching with Kerley and us having a younger WR across from Braylon. Heap would be awesome but IMO he would want to start for another team, I could see the Chiefs, Dolphags, Titans, and Cardinals. All Teams that need a reliable vet TE who can start and stay somewhat healthy. But if he wants another ring the Jets would be a great choice
Is Rex planning on getting in his car for another midnight recruiting trip or is that not allowed yet?
Cutting Heap saved the Ravens 4.6 million on the cap, he will probably sign back for a cheap deal. edit: Kelly Gregg is expected to receive a cheaper offer to re-sign as well, but then again ... Trevor Pryce decided not to wait for the new offer.
I just saw him brought up in this thread so I figured I'd include that he's expected to re-sign as well.
The Ravens have one of the best front offices in all of sports. They do things the right way. It'll be interesting to see if Todd Heap goes back though. The Ravens have two capable young tight ends on their roster already - I don't know if Heap wants to be a third stringer. In my opinion, Baltimore is creating space to re-sign Marshall Yanda and Josh Wilson.
It does make sense for them to go out and get Asomugha, but I just think he'll end up somewhere else. Yanda's one of the best young guards in the league and Wilson performed well for them last season - this is an off-season about continuity. Baltimore drafted Jimmy Smith to be their #1 corner. I think they're okay with him at that spot. Josh Wilson will be their #2.
