We can lose about $8M by restructuring Sanchez, without asking him to take any less actual money. We can drop $3.2M from Thomas. Harris has a cap hit of about $10M right now. A 4 year, $40M deal with $15M in signing bonus can drop that to like $6M. That's $15M right there. There's also a couple million lying around with restructures to Leonhard and a couple other guys as well.

That's the low hanging fruit. Doing something with Tomlinson would be tricky, but he can always be cut. Pace and Scott have much less incentive to agree to be restructured as well, but maybe something can be worked out down the road with them.

Counting the easy restructures/cuts, and the $6.5M in reported exceptions, the Jets are about $20M under the cap at the end of the day. That's if we go all out with pushing Sanchez and Harris's money down the road. I think that's room for one of the big three of our free agents when you count the other money that still needs to be spent on smaller roster filling type pieces. That includes the rookies, Shaun Ellis, Brodney Poole, Eric Smith, Nick Folk, Drew Coleman, Wayne Hunter, Jason Taylor, a replacement WR/CB for whoever we let go of Holmes/Edwards/Cromartie, probably a LB to replace Thomas, a punter, etc....

Those smaller pieces are going to take somewhere in the area of $12-14M I'd guess. We don't need to sign all of them, but we do need some of them. Bringing back both Holmes and Edwards would thus need to be done for like $6-8M this year. That can be done, but it would mean a really ugly cap situation in 2012 (when compounded with the Sanchez/Harris money being kicked down the curb).

I think we get back one of them, and go with a deeper roster throughout. I could be wrong of course.

Players can be cut on Thursday, and Free Agency opens Friday. That will give us a little window to talk to players/agents, get a deal ready for Harris, see if anybody will restructure, or take a paycut, etc.

From what I understood, a team can come to an agreement with any player before Friday, but it isn't an official signing until Friday.

Yeah. I'm sure teams have been speaking to players for a few weeks now anyway. Can't wait to see what Tanny has ready.

It's foolish for fans like yourself to expect any kind of loyalty from this league's players.

Holmes already has a ring. I'm sure he'd like to win another championship, but he has a chance to make tons of money this off-season.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with him cashing in by signing a huge deal with another team. If that's the path he chooses, then so be it.

Pro football talk says that if you get cut by 4:01 thursday you only get paid part of your workout bonus-topping out at 100k.

Since Thomas has a 500k workout bonus the Jets get an extra 400k in cap relief (3.6 rather than 3.4) if they cut him first thing Thursday.

As fans we want everyone to want to play for the Jets but much like us all in real life its a job and they will go for the most money 99% of time.

Holmes has yet to get his big payday..this is his time and the Jets will give it him

    Interesting cap wrinkle, per PFT:

2011 salary cap flexibility: Even though the salary cap was ostensibly scaled back, teams were given two avenues to make it easier to retain high priced veterans this year. Teams can “borrow” $3 million against future salary caps to pay for veterans. They can also use another $3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay to use for veterans.

So the cap really isn’t $120.375 million. It’s basically $126.88 if teams want it to be. An extra $6.5 million won’t save guys that truly deserve to get cut, but it will make life easier for teams near the cap limit.

6.5 mil. That's almost an entire Braylon, maybe 2/3 of a Santonio.

I heard they were gonna cut Mark Sanchez and Darrelle Revis because they make cost too much!

Then Tannenbaum is gonna spend ALL of that new money on Santonio Holmes' contract and we won't be able to sign anyone.

    We're gonna go 5-11!!!!!!!
