He had to hit the kick twice from 53 yards because of a called timeout. I had to click the link associated with it to recall what they were talking about.
Folk was good enough last season to earn another go-around. He'll probably come back into camp as the #1 with Nick Novac as the camp body to let the back up KRs get extra reps. Folk didn't cost us games last season that the offense didn't have a hand in ruining anyway. If he keeps his job then I'll feel the same way about it as if Novac winds up beating out Folk for a job.
Texas Stadium was not domed. It had an open roof. It was supposed to have retractable roof when it was originally built, but never did. It had covered seating, pretty much, but nothing more. The field took all the heat, and all the cold/rain. Also, when u talk about Jets not attempting FGs from long range, I noticed this when we had Feely as well. We CONSTANTLY gave up trying 50-55 yarders through out his 2 years in NY. We only attempted 3 FGs of 50+yards in those two years. Although he made all of them, it shows you how much faith we had in Feely kicking long FGs. Im sure we had many many more opportunities to kick more than 3 50+yard FGs in 32 games. As a comparison, Folk kicked 5 in one year. Yes, he only made two of them, but one miss was a 61 yarder, one was a 56 yarder (I think), and Im not sure of the third miss. Those are some really long kicks. I'd take Folk over Feely anyday, considering the financial aspect. Feely is making close to $2mil while Folk made around a mil. That extra mil can be the difference between keeping Santonio or trying to bring in some other overpriced FA WR with far less talent.
Let's talk about notattempting FGs from long range. i will throw out 2008 since Rex wasn't the coach but let's compare 2009 w/ Feely vs. 2010 w/ Folk. FGs NOT attempted from 50+ yds. 2009 w/ Feely: NO 56 & 55 Mia 53 Atl 58 Ind 57 Cin 54, 57 SD(playoffs) 56, 54 Total: 9 2010 w/ Folk: Bal 57 Mia 59, 59 GB 53 Det 58 NE 55 Mia 55, 54, 54, 52 Pitt 52, 50 Chi 53 Buf 57 NE(playoffs) 59, 56, 58 Total: 17 We only passed on 2 attempts from 50-55 w/ Feely in 2009, we passed on 9 from 50-55 w/ Folk. I guess we can put that theory to rest. There's no doubt feely is better than folk at this point but there's also no doubt the coaching staff had more confidence in feely. Folk had a decent season but if you asked rex or Tannenbaum privately if they could go back and not make the Taylor move they'd do it in a heartbeat. They allowed feely to go b/c a)they didn't want to pay him and b)they needed to let him go to sign Taylor to help the pass rush. Taylor didn't really help our pass rush but luckily Folk didn't cost us but they'd still rather have feely b/c Feely is a better K.
^I am rather amazed with this compilation. In 2010, we had the opportunity to kick 22 FGs from 50-60 yards. In 2009, we only had 10 opportunities. I am amazed. We only had 10 drives in the entire season that ended between the opponents 34-44 yard line. Not sure where u got this from.
I looked it up from the play by play sheets of games the last 2 years(inscluding the 6 playoff games). Could I have missed one here or there? sure but it gives us a good guide as to what happened.
I think you are way off base on this theory as it pertains to Rex. Folk and Feeley are kickers. Rex doesn't consider them "real" players. Taylor brought leadership to the position. Rex loves veteran players like Taylor and Trevor Pryce even though they are far past their prime. Rex would laugh at the thought of keeping Feeley instead of signing Taylor. he'd then refer to the safety Taylor made against Pittsburgh as being more important than anf FG.
Was always showing up late the leadership jason brought? he didn't have any winning experience so he couldn't help there. trust me, feely was not treated like a regular kicker and he was more of a leader than Jason was.
Sure, the right leaning political statements Feeley made regularly definitely unified the locker room. I am with you that Feeley is the better kicker but he simply is not a difference maker. If he was so valuable why has he been let go so many times?
I don't know, I haven't followed his career but the life of a K typically means you will kick for many teams. I know he was well liked as a Jet and he performed for us. That was a difficult decision they made, I didn't like it but I understood what they were trying to do.
