The article assumes that the 10 million in dead money won't count in 2011. nyjetscap.com keeps reporting that but I haven't seen anyone else saying that. It also assumes that the Jets don't have to count $4-5 million in workout bonuses that went unpaid because of the lockout. I haven't seen anything discussing this but I wouldn't be shocked if teams had to pay those out. [Whether they count against the cap, totally different question and I have no idea.] And good luck getting Harris's cap value down to $4 million.
The article was written a month ago. It couldn't factor in what we know now. Once Harris gets a long term deal his number will go from 10 to around 4. Even with the 10 mil in dead money there will still be room to resign FAs. I don't think everyone will be resigned, but those of which are top priorities should be able to come back to the team. Add the 10 mil in dead money with the "feels like" cap number of 130, and the Jets should still have roughly 15-20 mil in cap space to make moves. That's plenty of space.
Only if they really backload it (which they might). He's going to make 5/35, 17-20 guaranteed at a minimum, so if you get him a 4 million cap number through the use of bonuses and superseding signing bonuses you're talking about $8 million+ cap hits in the future.
Restructuring Sanchez and signing Harris is good but I'm nervous about reallocating too much money for the future. It's not worth being in 5 years of cap hell later on.
Exactly. Tanny's more or less stuck with a $7 million number for Pace (and it will be hard as heck to restructure that and you can't really cut him) largely because they took a really low number in 2008 (2.8 million).
Tomlinson needs to take a cut on his contract, and im sure it wont be to difficult for that to happen. Im sure he can care less about the money now, he wants that ring. Id also resign Jason Taylor to the minimum if he wanted to be a backup. Im sure Tanny has a plan and im also sure our free agents arent going to sign contracts with other teams without talking to the Jets first.
Lets not be typical Jet fans for just one day and keep an optimistic outlook for once, at least until we know the details of the new CBA.
Yea I agree but this is the closest this franchise has been to winning a Super Bowl and we cant sit back and watch this chance slip away. I also believe we need to give Rex time to build this team through the draft in the coming years, he still hasn't really had the chance to create his vision of the team he wants yet. He walked into a team that had the 16th ranked defense and added a few players and made it #1. Hopefully Wilkerson can take the defense to new heights, create those lanes for guys like Pace and Harris to get to the QB.
If he's 5 years 40 mil, and the signing bonus is 5mil with the salary averaging 7 million per season, the cap number can be 4 for this year. All they're talking about is this year. If the cap number is 5 or 6 then he wasn't that far off. Yes, at some point Harris' cap number is probably going to be around 7 or 8 on the 4th year of the deal and that's when he'll either get an extension or restructure.
You're sure it won't be difficult to get a professional athlete to take less money? It happens, but it's hardly the norm, even for guys looking for a ring.
Jason Taylor is not taking the minimum. He'd never agree to that. Market value - that's the key phrase.
Most of the ideas make sense but cutting Thomas is not one of them. They are thin at OLB to begin with and Thomas is not that expensive.
I think they'd try to resign him after cutting him. They'd probably want to save nearly a full million if they went that route.
Harris' number is going to be 7-9 for most of the contract, particularly if he signs for 4 or 5 in 2011.
I think if they were to cut him, someone would pounce on him, he is a flexible player who can play a down lineman in the 4-3 and olb in the 3-4. Hate to be paranoid but I can see the Pats picking him up immediately.
I can see it more as a Brandon Moore situation. You cut him with the full intention of signing him to a different deal. Although when that played out I was pretty confused. Cutting Moore made zero sense when it happened.
I agree that LT needs to take a cut, 4 million is clearly too high for his worth, Brunell @ 1.5 mil is high, Ainge should come off the books for 562K....IMO Pace is clearly not worth 9 million... question for cap experts; if the 2011 salary cap is @ 120 mil. as rumored, can the benefits $$ be used at all to help
