Alright so does the 'benefits' crap mean, dead money from the 2010 season, allowing teams to go over the 120 cap?
The salary cap is just that, salary. When we have discuss salary cap for the last 20 or so years we've been talking about the salary portion of the player's "share" of revenue. In short, benefits are not part of the salary cap.
I thought in the past they were, and now that the benefits will be increased in a large amounts for retired players that benefits won't count.
I think we're going to let go of Edwards and do whatever it takes to re-sign Holmes and I'll give re-signing Cromartie a better than 50% chance.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think we get another receiver as good as Holmes but I do think we can pick up another decent receiver quite easily - there seem to be several on the market. I think it's more difficult to get a corner who can cope with being thrown at as much as Revis's #2 is.
Santonio Holmes is not decent. He's a game changer - you can't replace a player like that "quite easily". ...especially if the team is strapped for cash. Kyle Wilson will need to step up. Our linebackers and safeties need to step up in coverage too. One of the team's biggest weaknesses is mediocre-at-best linebacker pass coverage.
Fair enough. Again, I'm not suggesting that any receiver we'd pick up in FA would be of Holmes' standard, just that there are a number of decent receivers available and very few worthwhile corners as far as I can tell. I wouldn't consider myself enough of an expert to make a fair call on whether Wilson is going to be able to step up into the role of the #2 corner, especially given how much attention the #2 is likely to see opposite Revis, but if he can replace Cromartie then I agree that it makes more sense. Seems like a big waste of a second round pick though to have Cromartie for a one season rental.
