Just started watching season 5 of The Wire...Man I fucking love that show. Breaking Bad is the closest thing to the Wire's level of drama on tv right now
season 1- 7 episodes season 2- 13 episodes season 3- 13 episodes I have to disagree with you about the show getting better ONLY because I found all three seasons to be top-flight entertainment. I thought all 3 seasons were superb.
After watching and re-watching Season 3 of BB, it's passed The Wire on my all-time favorite series list. The Wire lost some points with the fake serial killer plot.
I'm not sure that's exactly what he meant. I think he was saying that this show just gets better and better as it keeps going. It's almost addicting - it holds you in from the very beginning and doesn't let up.
I like how up until the scene with the assassin twins, you think Hank is full of shit with how tough he is. then he comes through in the clutch. love it. It actually creates an interesting element too because up until he is almost assassinated, you were rooting against him catching Walt but post assassination attempt, it creates a weird dynamic for the viewer because you are now rooting for Hank because he sort of takes over the hero role. IDk, good writing.
Earlier in the series, Hank did leave his gun in the car and fight those two guys at the hole-in-the-wall bar. That was a pretty random scene, but I think he needed that to feel like a capable agent again. His anger/PTSD got the best of him when he attacked Pinkman though. I think a lot of people will be rooting for Hank to bounce back during the fourth season. It will be terrible if he remains bed ridden for the entire season - hopefully he continues his DEA career in some way. I don't really know who to pull for anymore. Both Jesse and Walter have become the "bad guy", but for some reason, I feel like Pinkman is the more redeemable character out of the two.
agreed. i think since he's so less stable than walter he can go either way. i'm curious to see if that inner dilemma of him being the bad guy from last season continues.
The Wire wins because there's no Skyler on that show. Seriously, every character on that show is interesting and that's a very difficult thing to do over 5 seasons with the gigantic cast they had.
Skyler is supposed to be like an annoying, disliked bitch. She's definitely an interested character. If you dislike her, Anna Gunn's just doing a great job. The Wire had plenty of annoying characters - Kima and Ziggy come to mind. No one knows how Breaking Bad will turn out in the end, but Gilligan wants to end it after five seasons...so they can be compared in a few years. In my opinion, over the past three seasons Breaking Bad's had the perfect cast. Every actor is perfect for their role. Hopefully that continues into the fourth season.
I don't agree with this. There's a pretty big difference between a "bad" or unsympathetic character being a good foil and being so irritating that you don't ever want to see them on the screen. Skyler definitely falls in the latter category for me. Really the only place characters like her have is if they're constantly being mocked or fucking up so the audience can laugh at their misfortune. Mad Men does a pretty good job of this with Don's awful wife. As far as Kima, she was fine until the last season, and Ziggy was just awesome, probably the best part of Season 2.
I read an interview with Bryan Cranston earlier in the week and he said something like: "On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being Mr. Chips and 10 being Scarface, Walter White becomes a 6 during season four and by the end he's a 7." ...one more week.
In regards to BB vs The Wire, I love the Wire but season 5, just was not up to the standards of the other 4. I think the reporter angle and serial killer stuff was just flat. That said season 1-4 were so good that I think I can overlook 5. Besides mediocre to The Wires standards is still better than 99.9% of other shows. Breaking Bad is awesome, it is the best show currently going on TV. The only thing I think it lacks in regards to what I consider the greatest shows I have ever watched, is scope. Breaking Bad's cast is about 1/4 the size of Deadwood or The Wire. Those shows it seemed every single actor they hired did yeoman's work. TW and DW allowed 30-40 character actors each to have regular work and many were freaking no-names prior. I have to believe that was a result of the excellent writing and direction of the show. Now do I hold the above against BB? Nope not at all, if this season is as good as advertised I will move BB ahead of TW, scope or no scope. Bryan Cranston is moving close to Ian McShane territory as far as doing such a great job with an anti-hero. I still think Iam McShane is the gold standard for any TV anti-hero so that is quite the compliment. Also, in regards to Anna Gunn, I am not a fan. She was on 2 of the best drama's ever ad it seems her performance is just blah to me. In Deadwood she was the one character that I thought was really lacking or specifically missing something. She was like white bread or parsley, so uninteresting or boring if you will. In BB she started off the same, I could not stand her when she was on screen the first 2 seasons, I would just cringe. Up until that point it has to be Anna Gunn as she basically did this in 2 great shows. That said when she banged the boss and started to be an overt cunt, I don't cringe nearly as much and I like her more. Still there is something boring about Anna Gunn , which is funny because in real life she seems like she would be a great lay............lmao She really needs to get her personality to show more.
we need to give it time...let this series finish then we can compare the two shows. i love The Wire and Breaking Bad...but it is close right now if you are comparing the first 3 seasons...If BB can end in a steller way then things could go BB's way. For now, The Wire is right there
Skylar is pretty annoying. But she's no Jar Jar Binx or the Gay blonde from Game of Throans who gets melted. I put her on par with Janet in Rescue Me or Jeff's wife in Curb.
What's with all of The Wire comparison? It certainly could be the bar but it's not the only thing at that level. The Wire was excellent (probably my top 3 favorite dramas ever) but I found Six Feet Under to be just as well written, if not better.
Did some major catching up on this show, I never got into it until just recently, but the characters, the plot it's fucking awesome, thank God for this thread otherwise I probably wouldn't of heard of this show. Can't wait to see how Walt gets out of that situation back in the factory tho
