LT! http://www.nyjetscap.com/ladainiantomlinson.html 3.125 mill off the books if we get rid of him. Love the guy but at what point does he become expendable to re-sign Edwards, Holmes, Cro & co? I think if the Jets were that desperate to get under the cap they'd ask him to take less money and he'd accept... 4 mill invested in your 3rd down back is a lot. I'd also be ok with giving him an extra year in his contract spreading his cost over 2 years... The Powell selection made a lot more sense when I read LT's cap hit.
I'd be disappointed if he got cut. I love his attitude and his experience is extremely valuable to guys like Greene, McKnight and Powell. If him getting cut led to Santonio and Braylon getting re-signed I wouldn't feel as bad but LT is one of those guys I've always rooted for.
I hope it doesn't... it's just that we've discussed many scenarios and never really thought about this one. That's a lot of money for a 3rd down back and we MIGHT be in a shitty position financially. Just wanted to know how much love TGG had for LT...
i dont know if i would go so far as to call him a 3rd down back. he did gain more yards than greene last year and had a higher ypc. i still am not sold on greene as a number 1 back. i have absolutely no faith in mcknight and powell is a rookie so he is worthless as of this second. its a tough call, he provides a tremendous amount of consistency that this team needs. remember how good he was at times last year, that will be tough to replace, especially when after him you have a guy who may be very good and a bunch of huge questions after that. definitely a tough call. especially for a run first team.
What if they made beer sandwiches? Would Braylon Edwards accept them as payment in lieu of bonus considerations? Would Cromartie have to worry about increased child support due to their side effects?
LT won't be cut.. maaaaaybe they'll ask him to take less money and I bet he would. Can't go into the season with a basically unproven Greene, a guy who did nothing at all last year and was inactive much of the season and a rookie. They need LT.
We still haven't seen Greene get any significant time in passing situations, and LT was a crutch for Sanchez in terms of chip blocks and dump-off options. While Mark is in his third year now, I'm not sure how willing the Jets would be to take that crutch away in favor of Greene, McKnight and the rookie Powell. Especially Schotty. We know how he loves his declining veteran backs. Nice attempt at sparking a new debate, but it's unrealistic at best I think.
Exactly. You'd need to have a ton of faith in McKnight or feel really comfortable about getting a third down back (Kevin Faulk or someone) to cut LdT. I wouldn't be surprised to see them restructure his contract a bit, either just flat out reducing his salary or extending him a year and planning to absorb the cap hit in 2012 rather than 2011.
I got one that I've been pondering for sometime. What about releasing or trading Cotchery for some cap space? Cotchery is the perfect #2/3 WR for a cold weather team like we have. He's been a Jet his whole career, hard worker, tough, and great in the locker room. However, he can be inconsistent, is recovering from a herniated disc, and frankly isn't as good as Braylon or Holmes who both compliment eachother well in a Swann/Stallworth sort of way. Obviously, if you can bring all of them back you do...but between Holmes/Cotchery, Edwards/Cotchery and Holmes/Edwards I sign up for the last pairing every single time. Thoughts?
There's a lot of emotional attachment from the fan base for Cotchery. So I could see you getting thrown under the bus for even making the suggestion. From a football point of view, it makes sense....you want to keep as much elite talent on your roster as you can. That's not a knock on Cotch, he's a talented wideout for this franchise. Is he better than Edwards and Holmes?....no.
