With the season approaching....might as well start warming up the Schotty debate again. Junc will love this. And yes, I realize this is a Cimini article. link
I would love nothing more for him to get his ring this year then go take the Miami job...Talk about an easy two wins. Rex would have his number no doubt.
I was really critical of Schotty over the last 3 seasons. But looking back now, he's a decent offensive-mind.....his biggest weakness is that he shows no consistency in his game planning. That drives me nuts.
The article is from Cimini but the votew was from the espn "expert" bloggers. I like that he is #3, I think he has the ability to be a good HC some day but Perry fewell at #1? Was it his impressive stint as Buf interim HC or the fact he oversaw a Giant D that collapsed? I don't get it.
Dan Graziano sums it up perfectly: Schottenheimer's pedigree doesn't hurt -- he's the son of longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer -- and I'm not sure how closely teams will dissect the specifics of the Jets' offensive performance. Graziano, on the other hand, thinks Schottenheimer is close to coaching his way out of the golden-child image he cultivated and left him off his ballot. "Having spent a good amount of time around that team the past couple of years, I just feel like defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is the more likely guy to end up a head coach," Graziano said. "Schottenheimer's under a ton of pressure as Ryan defers the offensive responsibilities to him. I feel like, if the offense has a bad year, he could end up in trouble or even out of a job. And given their youth at quarterback and running back and the uncertainty of their receiver situation, a bad year for the Jets' offense is possible. "Now, he could be a genius, make chicken salad and be the next hot name eight months from now. But I think there's the potential that he may have already peaked as a hot coaching prospect and that he might not be set up to succeed in New York."
Yeah...I laughed at the Fewell ranking. He's awful. I'm hoping Tom Moore smartens Schotty up this season. If Schotty can stay within the game plan and stop overthinking everything....I think the Jets will be more successful and my basement walls will have less holes punched in them.
Brian Schottenheimer, like many offensive coordinators, gets a bad reputation with fans, mostly due to a combination of fan ignorance, his own flawed instincts for the flow of a successful drive, and being an extreme. If you want to describe it with a political context, Paul Hackett was extreme Conservative and Brian is extreme Liberal. Brian is a very outside box thinker and cares little for statistical success rates. He is football Mad Scientist. Many coaches like that have failed miserably, and a handful have succeeded and become legends as coordinators. Buddy Ryan was no exception to the latter. And now that his very own Football Frankenstein is coming of age, we will know the future path of Brian Schottenheimer's career, whether it be successful mentor of Mark Sanchez and reluctant Head Coaching candidate or failed mentor of Mark Sanchez and eager Head Coaching candidate. Not to mention, the Jets seem to want some insurance by bringing Tom Moore so close to the team.
If he were to win a SB with us I'm sure he'd be hired somewhere else the next year. Just more motivation to bring home the bacon.
I think bringing in Tom Moore is a clear indication that Rex got tired of Schotty's inconsistencies last season, and would like more continuity from the offensive side of things in 2011. I'm sure Moore was brought in for other reasons as well...but the Schotty reason sticks out in my mind and makes sense.
I don't think that is the case at all. First off that is a rumor, second from the top down the Jets try to get as much knowledge from outside sources as possible. They met w/ defensive coaches, offensive coaches, STs coaches,... We have Bill Callahan who is a great OL coach yet we had a consultant breaking down game film from Buffalo(Jim McNally)- that wasn't an indictation he was tired of Callahan just like the possible consultant role of Moore doesn't mean anything anti-Brian.
Well, in any case, it's all speculation. My bottom line is that I hope Brian learned how to make in-game adjustments when required to do so and not overthink the offense into a clusterfuck. pats-hater is correct in what he posted earlier. Either Schotty looks like a genius, or he orchestrates a disaster. I hope Schotty finds a happy medium in 2011.
I think it has much more to do w/ our players than our OC. remember, he has had a young, developing QB the last 2 years. It's more about Mark than brian. brian is doing a great job developing him but Mark is still learning and is up and down.
If you look at other team's boards practically every fanbase in the NFL thinks their offensive coordinator is the worst in the league.
That is correct, the OC is always the guy fans blame when an offense struggles. Sometimes it's on the OC and sometimes it isn't. brian hasn't been perfect but we are lucky to have him.
Brian's reputation for being inconsistent was apparent long before Sanchez's arrival in the Big Apple. just sayin'.
That had more to do w/ personnel. 2006 our O was good w/ a healthy Chad for 16 games but we had no RBs that year. 2007 we lost kendall, Chad was hurt and our OL was in shambles 2008 he got favre a month before the start of the season
Brian sucks. If we are going to claim that Sanchez is inconsistent then the same needs to be said for Brian. It's the same shit week in and week out. Run up the middle, quick slant or a bomb. How fustrating was it watching the offense this year specifically in the middle of the season? How many times did we settle for 3 points instead of going in for the six? How long was that drought where we didn't score a first quarter td? Schotty's gameplan did get better in the playoffs and he's not the reason we lost in the AFCCG but if we did happen to get rid of Schotty I wouldn't be complaining.
