Don has two things going for him that Revis doesn't yet, a SB ring and a HOF jacket. "IF" Revis stays healthy and maintains his level of play he should have both too, but I have seen many to-be HOF players fall off the end of the earth. Whether from having a big head, legal issues or a serious career ending injury. As good as Revis may be if his career ended any time soon he would never get a sniff of a jacket. Don deserves to win this trash talk, just because he has the hardware to back it up, for now....
Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson also have the same hardware....does that make them better football players than Revis? c'mon dude.
so....a HOF jacket automatically makes you a better football player than every current player in the league. The fact that Maynard played in a completely different era than Revis doesn't factor in at all, right? nice logic. EDIT: BTW, Mike Ditka owns a HOF jacket too....but i'd take Tony Gonzalez over him any day of the week.
Its trash talk, not stats and you can't compare two great players from different eras. A HOF jacket states you were one of the best NFL players to ever step on the field and have the numbers to back it up. Revis still has a long way to earning a Jacket and until he does, Don deserves to win this trash talk argument.
the question being debated is "Can Revis cover Maynard?" Given Revis's recent success and weekly dismantling of the game's TOP Wr's...the correct answer would most likely be a resounding YES. Revis hasn't even reached his prime yet. whatever else you spewed in your post is totally irrelevant to the discussion.
Under today's rules and given Don's speed and depending the on QB throwong the ball I think Revis would have a hard time covering him, and if Revis let him get by it would be goodnight. I loved Chrebet, but Don was a faster and more elusive Wayne. When using trash talk there will never be a winner......
Revis is dominating in an era where WR's hide behind pass interference calls. If Revis played in Maynard's era, Revis would've destroyed him. Like I said earlier in the thread, I respect Don Maynard and what he's done for this franchise....but he's talking out of his ass here (HOF jacket or not ).
We can agree to disagree, but stat and every other wise Don is the best Jet ever, especially considering who was throwing him the ball. We all may love Namath, but he was not accurate. Someday Revis may be, but Don cureently is. As stated he is one of only two Jets to have a SB ring and a HOF jacket. The Namath got in due to huge popularity and the garrantee.
Don Maynard is a HOF receiver. Not just a good receiver. He played in an era where the DBs would grab, claw, push and try to mangle the receivers and it was all legal. Maynard rent up against some of the all time great and had success. I don't think Revis would destroy Maynard in Maynard's day or current day.
1970 was the year in which "wide receiver" pretty much officially replaced "split end" and "flanker" in pro football terminology.
Yea the arguing is kind of pointless and cannot be proven. All Ryan is saying is he expects Revis to be the best of the bunch. Based on his career so far, if he continues this way, you would have to say that will be the case.
This argument is tough to take sides because Don's a legend but seriously? Lol I guarantee even the worst receiver Revis covers is faster. All you have to do is look at Don, end of debate. The science behind developing the perfect athlete is lightyears ahead of where it was 40 years ago. Look at Revis' arm and compare. One bump from Revis and Don would be on his ass. There's nothing to debate. Side-note, successful white receivers are rare for a reason. Don does look fast when watching him play against slower defenders.
I now hope Revis is consumed in a volcano. So the old guy is talking trash. I honestly find it entertaining. A least it isn't more reports of secret meetings, posturing and fallout plans regarding the cba. I wonder what the chances are that his inflection was more glib than serious. Either way, I was smiling when I read it. Though I would like to see the "older players were tougher" claim put to the test under 1960's rules/refs.
