Don Maynard is just being silly now. Yes, he was a very good receiver in his day, but D. Revis does the impossible - he shuts down the best receivers in the game in a passer's league, with all of the rules in the opposition's favor. Without those rules Maynard is lucky to have a ball thrown in his direction by a smart quarterback. And since Namath was not known particularly for his mental acumen, Revis would likely pick the ball 5-10 times in one game. What are the odds that Don Maynard had a jar of moonshine in his hand when he made these regrettable comments? This is ESPN we are talking about, after all.
I'd expect nothing more from the typical NFL fan. They are the same people who will vote Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson into the NBA All-Star game next year.
I've read some of your posts. You might be served well to take your own advice, especially where Mark Sanchez is concerned.
umm is Maynard better than Calvin or Andre Johnson? nope, sorry Don. Love the fire though even after all these years.
It was a much different game back in the day too, not as many rules that favor the WR. Imagine what Revis could do under those conditions.
Don beat some of the game's greatest of all-time during his career. A little more respect for Don is needed in this thread.
Like I said....no disrespect to Don Maynard in any way shape or form. But in today's NFL, Revis would own him. Especially considering Revis hasn't even hit his prime yet.
Um... Maynard may be a Hall of Famer, but he was shut down on occassion. Here's one from Maynard's most productive year, 1967: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/196712100nyj.htm The KC Chiefs were a team that those early Jets struggled to get passed. The following year Don Maynard destroyed them for 203 yards and 2 TDs in the first game of our Super Bowl season. The previous three seasons, however, Maynard was held to 8 catches, 127 yards, and no TDs in 3 meetings. So in the stretch of three years, Maynard was owned by someone on the Chiefs (most likely Hall of Famer Emmitt Thomas, a rookie in '66). Maynard would get some catches, but would likely be owned by Revis.
Sorry Don. I love ya man, but I saw you play.......and I have seen Revis play. Revis would have covered you like chocolate on a Klondike bar. Case closed. ....and stop smokin that shit...your too old for that !
He tore it up in our AFL Championship game, 2 TD for 118 yards including the game winning TD. I love watching that series of plays against the Raiders, the 52 yarder down to the 6, followed by the game winner. His big role drew the coverage in the SB and allowed for George Sauer Jr. to have a huge game, so I will forever love him. (Even though it was a wee bit before my time) No disrespect intended for the HOF'r, but today's NFL and athletes are much different. You can just tell by his body type.
He's out of his mind. That was an era where your average Joe could probably make the practice squad of a football team.
Revis won't be the best until he brings a Super Bowl to NY/NJ or at least until he performs like this throughout his entire career. Until then Joe & Curtis are ahead of him.
You know it's old when somebody is classified as "flanker" , I wonder if Sauer's cards says "split end" on it?
