First time i saw a very solid and updated FA list so figured id post here and see what players would be the best fit for our team (and viable for us to actually sign).

They are predicting this to be the best free agent class in the history of the nfl (coming off a year where guys who shoulda been ufa last year werent, and then having the rules expanded this year to include guys who wouldnt of been UFA to become UFA thus making it saturated with talent) which is why i figured id put this thread here (not like theres much else goin on)

Note I only included defensive players . Including hbs/qbs/tes just seemed kinda stupid to me. And didnt post WRs since we just drafted 2 and theres a great chance at least 2 of our 3 FAs end up back.

And also this list is based on where the current prediction of the league rules for the season lies, in terms to 4 and 5 year free agents almost certainly being UFA.

Quickest thing to jump out at me is the crazy amount of DBs out there.

Safeties and corners all over the place. Suddenly makes Cromartie a bit more expendable.

Assuming Talib doesnt end up in prison, what a steal that could be.

And hell id be SHOCKED if we dont have a new safety on the roster come next season, although alot of those 3-5 year guys are where the best names are

I like DT Kris Jenkins and DE Shaun Ellis with 1 year deals.

I think that the Saints will sign him again but I really like Anthony Hargrove. I can see him being a DE in a 34.

    1. Beware of Aubrayo Franklin. If you use him in typical two-gapping 3-4 NT, he's completely ineffective. He's only good for Bum Phillips 3-4. I think Rex mixes up both Fairbanks/Bullough 3-4 and Bum Phillips 3-4, so he's not such a good fit in 3-4 alignment, as he's nothing more than one-trick pony here. I don't know how he will do in 46 alignment or 4-3. Maybe he should serve well as an undertackle role in 4-3, but that means Rex will have to have yet another gap eating NT for him - which is why you wanted to bolster the NT line in the first place. Franklin isn't really solving any problem - or that's what I think. If Kelly Gregg can be had at a bargain price, he's the way to go. (And he doesn't come with injury baggage like Kris Jenkins)

    2. I'd be intrigued by Marcus Spears and Shaun Ellis. If both can be had for a reasonable price tag, then I wouldn't mind seeing them (for Ellis, back) in Gang green. Getting physical up front is NEVER a bad thing, as long as the body you bring in are capable.

    3. I like Dawan Landry from the RFA pool (like so many others) and I also see a lot of capable CBs coming out (Aqib Talib/Ike Taylor) If Cro tries to break the bank, Jets should have some options to consider.

    4. I like Barrett Ruud and Kirk Morrison only out of the LB crop, and they are both ILBs, which Jets don't need. I don't think Jets should reach for OLBs here

I doubt Spears, or any other DL that'd command a large multi-year deal, would be considered by the NYJ in wake of drafting Wilkerson and K. Ellis. That, coupled with our own FA situation, would make it very surprising if we landed a guy like Spears or even K. Gregg.

Talib and Ruud have spent their entire careers in the Tampa 2. Stay away from the NYJ, please. Ike Taylor and Dawan Landry would be great additions.

Gregg is expecting a large multi year deal ?

Hes going to be 35 next season, maybe its me but I dont expect too many teams to offer a 35 year old big money or a long term contract. Especially for a guy who had a relatively down year last season

Not to mention hes a large man who underwent microfracture surgery on his knee not too long ago, that aint gonna help his stock. He might not be DIRT cheap, but hes not gonna be getting more than 3 years 10-12 million tops

I didn't know he was 35..... I'll retract him as an example. His connections with RR/Pettine/etc. might make him a possible addition, at a fair cost.

Absolutely id love the move IF we felt Jenks wasnt a viable option.

Our defensive line is going to be incredibly inexperienced next year, and were gonna need some vet leadership on it.

Out of the entire roster, I like:

    NT: Kris Jenkins/Kelly Gregg
    DE: Shaun Ellis/(Maybe) Marcus Spears
    CB: Cro/Ike Taylor
    FS: Dawan Landry

Other than these, Jets should do very well to stay away from the entire FA class.

At the same time this guys gonna get a cheap 1 year flier kinda contract. And he could easily get the best bang for your buck with him over any corner in the nfl

There's a TON of safeties/corners you should be drooling over. LBs basically blow, but the dbs man they'd soften the loss of cro very easily for me

the other thing to take into account with the sheer number of DB's on the market, is that it lowers the value of all of them. Because there is a high supply, that means that the top guys will not get a ton of money, and then the middle guys will get even less. The CB market is usually very bare, meaning that the top guy gets ridiculously overpaid.

Nnamdi may still get way to much this year, but every other contract will be sane, and probably mild in comparison to other years. So if Cro is really wanted back, his value will be more manageable this year as opposed to other years.

    De

I was looking at Jason Babin. I'm not sure what kind of contract he is looking for but i think he would be a good addition. Even with having Ellis for one more year I like Babin for 3 or 4 years. This way next year we have Ellis, Wilk, and Babin. Babin played both sides for Titans which really works for Rex.

So basically you have Ellis and Babin for a solid line the first year with the rookie getting in to the rotation a lot since Babin can bounce around. After the year, It's Wilk and Babin.

Last year was obviously a huge breakout with 12.5 sacks. Again i don't know if he is likely to resign or anything about his wanted contract. On paper it looks very smart and safe until the next young DE is obtained in a 1-3 years.

I thought Babin was 4-3 DE, no? If he can't cover in space (yet another Gholston experiment) then he has no staple place in this team - maybe as a sub package substitute, but no more than that. And shelling out mucho cash for a player with limited use is no-no for me.

    He is.

He also has been considered a bust to this point in his career (age 31 now).

Not gonna lie I think a lot of his success just came from the system the Titans got going on and its supporting cast.

Plus he played some weak ass offensive lines last season. 11 of his 12.5 sacks were against the 10 worst passing offensive lines in the nfl. Almost half of them vs Hou/Dal alone.

I'd have to say that I thought the LT fit the Jets pretty well. Cromartie seemed to take some time to fit into Rex's schemes.

Assuming we dont re-sign Cro, I'm picking Carlos Rogers. I know K. Wilson is waiting in the wings, but this FO has a habit of looking for FA CBs.

+1. Babin played like shit in Dom Capers' 3-4 during his time with Houston and was considered a large dissapointment. He found his game again with the Titans in their 4-3. Based on that body of work, I'd prefer the NYJ to stay the fuck away.
