I went to my first Jets Training camp when I was 15 which was 1997, the team's first year under Parcells. The thing I remember most about those practices was how good Aaron Glenn was. He was smart, athletic, extremely quick and more physical than you'd think. He was far and away the most talented player on those mid to late 90s Jet team(at least until #28 arrived). He had some dominant performances from 97-99 under Parcells. He's likely the only "dominant" player on this list. I havent gone to TC since the move to Cortland. I'm adamant about attending this summer should the lockout be lifted. One thing I want to see is Revis as I haven't seen him in practice since 08 and I want to compare his practice presence to the way Glenn blew me away all those years ago.
They had to put him on the unprotected list for the Texans to take him in the expansion draft because of the salary cap issues we had. Blaming Herman Edwards or Terry Bradway is wrong here.
This. We actually let Glenn go at the perfect time. (Coleman, for that matter, too). His best seasons were easily with us, although he had a couple of decent seasons in Texas.
Yea, but Glenn and Robinson combined for $13million that year. With Ryan Young being the first Jets player taken in the expansion draft the Jets could have pulled Glenn from the list. Keeping Glenn on the expansion draft list was mostly a financial decision which, when you look back, was the right move given his decline and his cost. However, it's still completely acceptable to bash Herm and Bradway for overpaying for Aaron Beasley the first chance they got.
In my lifetime it's been james Hasty, I think Aaron Glenn is one of the most overrated players in Jets history. He was always torched by good WRs, he'd dominate the average to below average guys but get killed by the better WRs in the league. he was a good corner, nothing more.
Hard choice between Hasty and Glenn. I think I have to go with Glenn. Two time ProBowler and almost a Super Bowl appearance.
Oh and Cromartie can make a case if we get him back for 3-4 more seasons. He easily has the tools to be better than Glenn was.
I didn't follow the Jets as closely when I was younger, but I remember Aaron Glenn being pretty dominant. At least I remember people saying that of him.
Keep in mind in that almost SB year Aaron Glenn was hurt and missed the critical games late in the season in the playoffs. he came back in postseason but he was used sparingly as Ray Mickens was starting and playing his old role.
Excellent point. I always liked Mickens after that season and thought he didn't get enough of a chance. I still have to go with Glenn as Hasty's best years were not with the Jets.
Mickens was a great nickel back, he struggled a bit as a starting corner. A guy who gets lost but was really good for us was Otis Smith. He was our best corner in 1998. Hasty was really good w/ us, he didn't get recognition b/c we stunk in those years.
Dwight Lowery reminds me of Ray Mickens. Great when used situationally, but when used every down he becomes a target. Receivers and quarterbacks figure out their weakness and expose it. Lowery still has potential and I'd like to see him get another shot, even at safety. Kyle Wilson could be in the same boat, but we really won't know for another couple years. Otis Smith was aging when we got him. He was solid, but the writing was on the wall. I can't believe New England held on to him as long as they did or got to a Super Bowl with him starting.
Lowery played great at the safety position when called upon in the playoffs. With further development at Safety I think he can play a very solid role for us.
