I really think that LB Mark Herzlich is worth a shot. By all accounts before his cancer he would have been a round 1/ day 1 pick. I was listening to Mayock last night and made some good points. He may not be the same ball player right now, but hes constantly improving. Will he get back to where he was? No not likely. But like Mayock said, he would make an excellent STs player and a fantastic lockeroom presence. Mark Herzlich (LB) - Height: 6'4" - Weight: 244 lbs. - Arm Length: 32 3/8 in. - Hand Size: 10 in. - College: Boston College - Conference: ACC Overview Herzlich has the physical tools, work ethic, character and toughness coveted by every NFL franchise. He displayed these traits not only in his triumph over cancer, but as a natural team leader on the field. Is a complete player against the run. Takes on and gets off blockers quickly and chases down plays all over the field. He can run with tight ends and backs, play in zone, and rush the quarterback. Some teams may continue to view his medical history as a red flag. Additionally, he needs a little polish with his tackling and production was down post-comeback as a senior. Still, Herzlich shouldn't last past the first few rounds. Strengths Herzlich possesses rare intangibles for an NFL Draft prospect. Is a highly-productive player who has a terrific blend of height, bulk and top-end speed. Plays with good awareness and discipline and doesn't stay blocked long. Can make plays from sideline-to-sideline and can stay with running backs in coverage. Can rush the passer and displays great closing burst. Weaknesses Durability is still somewhat of a concern after his courageous battle to fight cancer. Could afford to improve his tackling consistency. Would benefit from developing a wider variety of pass rushing moves. Isn't a liability in coverage but doesn't show great explosion out of his pedal. Haha, Jerrard Tarrant*. But as for the UDFAs as a whole, it just amazes me how some of these guys don't get picked. It really does. I mean, Deunta Williams and Joe Lefeged don't go, but that one guy who was in prison for 2 years does?
I hear ya on taht. I've read before that Tanny values picks in round 5-7 only slightly higher than a UDFA. Watching some of the talent that goes undrafted an you can see why.
Mark Herzlich, Ian Williams and Kendric Burney going undrafted are all surprises for me. Herzlich especially.
I was pissed when no one took him yesterday. How in the fuck can a GM justify drafting a Division II player instead of Mark Herzlich? Even if he doesn't get back to full strength, he's still a great locker room guy that can lead.
This seems to be a draft where medical reports were more important than ever before if you consider how guys like Cannon, Quinn, and Herzlich dropped. All had some non football related injury but people didnt want to take them. I agree some of these players falling are ridiculous
Yeah, I was disappointed Mark Herzlich wasn't drafted. He's someone anyone can root for and has a demeanor that can rub off on a locker room, plus he's a constantly improving football player...sad Has anyone heard why Deunta Williams, Deandre McDaniel, Burney and Lefeged werent drafted???
The only reason I didnt like drafting Scotty McKnight is because of all these FA still left. We need to make sure one of these kids are on our team instead of them choosing somewhere else. If McKnight he was a UDFA, which he might of been, would of signed here guaranteed.
In addition Vorrecht's list, a few other guys I feel the Jets should consider are Brandon Bair, Ugo Chinasa and Steven Friday. Bair would likely be a DE here, we have pretty good depth now, but you can never have too many. Friday and Chinasa may be able to develop into 3-4 OLBs. Both have decent size, some upside and pretty good pass rushing ability.
Thats my list of guys who I think have a chance to make it as UDFA's. I also added in Casman's addition, mostly because I think all three have a shot to make it.
UFA often get paid more than 6-7th round guys because teams have to present the most attractive offer to get the guys signed. We paid Devito the equivalant to a 6th round pick when we signed him.
