Hope the Jets can get Pierre Allen, DE/OLB of Nebraska....I thought he'd go in the 6th round to someone so getting him as a UDFA would be a coup. He won't be a guy who will make an impact right away but having him stored on the practice squad would be good since he's raw but has the tools to be useful in the future. Maybe he would pick us since we have one of his ex coaches in Callahan.
I'd take my chances with Westermann, kid has a motor and has shown some flashes. I still think he can be a servicable player in this defense.
No one is saying that Pace is a bad OLB. We just wanted a pass rusher on the other side on 3rd downs who could develop into a full time OLB.
Speaking of UDFAs, I'll bet Thomas Keiser is regretting his decision right about now. Guy came out of Stanford a year early, didn't get a combine invite, and didn't go drafted. I think he got his degree, but he could have co-termed and gotten a Master's while boosting his stock. And speaking of Stanford, Chase Thomas will be a beast in a couple of years. Maybe next year with Harbaugh gone.
Calvin underrated? Yet you state exactly why people bitch about him. Bottom line is Pace puts up a good game maybe 3 times in the season, we didn't sign him for that. He should be causing fits but goes MIA way too much. IMO, He's basically been a disappointment. When I rewatch games of the season He is constantly going at half speed at times while the rest of the team is hustling, he's also indecisive for someone at a position that needs to be quick.
This draft/offseason basically came down to priorities as far as defense goes. Which was necessary and would have the greatest impact. Yes we needed an OLB but our OLBs aren't useless. Our DLine on the other hand is old and the rest are overachievers. It had to be addressed, and like I said in another thread, I'm pretty sure Rex and Pettine saw something on film that showed them the guys up front weren't being disruptive enough to open up lanes for blitzers. Pace absolutely sucked last year but theres no doubt his foot was an issue. I think we'll see the old CP back.
Vernon Gholston? He is available and I know he didn't pan out from his #6 overall selection but you can't deny his physical talent. I think Rex and Pettine could get something out of his freakish body. We need a pass rushing OLB and he will probably be pretty cheap, why not take a chance on this guy?
F'n A! I didn't think I could hate Crazy Al anymore, then he tagged Wimbley. He would have been perfect. Maybe we sign Kiwi if RFA rules are different. Who knows, tags could end up being a thing of the past, then Wimbley and Woodley become options.
Only Harris is in/ approaching his prime. The rest of the starters have already seen their primes, and are essentially the same age/ mileage. Jets have got to infuse some quality youth sooner than later to avoid it being an absolute need. And because of the type of play, LB's are prone to injury as are RB's. The team is thin at quality depth too. IMO a pretty valid concern and graded as a unit (i.e. Dbackfield, Dline, LBs, Oline, RBs, WRs, etc it is near our weakest area, and certainly where we're overpaying for the production. thomas 31 10th season pace 30-31 9th season (turns 31 in oct) harris 27 5th season scott 30-31 10th season (turns 31 in preseason)
Well the reason David Harris picked off Tom Brady in the playoffs was because of Calvin Pace sticking his arm up and Brady had to throw over it.
I doubt franchise tags become things of the past, and if they do, Woodley and Hali get MONSTER contracts and Wimbley gets a huge one. Al tagged Wimbley precisely because of the state of the market. They're rumored to be contemplating a switch to the 3-4.
If we didn't just boost our DL on a defense that generates its pressure from unbalanced fronts (essentially taking an extra lineman or two out of the play), I'd put OLB at a higher priority than retaining both of our receivers...maybe.
With a top flight pass rusher in Rex's D, we wouldn't need the points, but I get what you're saying. Edwards, Cotch, Keller, Kerley, Conner, Powell and/or McKnight coupled with a more experienced Sanchez isn't such a bad lineup.
We weren't going to solve all of our defensive problems in one draft, especially when we were missing our 2nd round pick. Give it a year and let the DLine picks learn the system. After next year's draft, the pass-rusher we get is going to have more help than he'll need getting to the QB. Until then, we have a NT with the potential to hurt Nick Mangold and a 3-4 DE who can actually rush the passer. This defense will be at least as good as it was last year with the same OLBs.
I agree completely. It will be even better because Pace wasn't himself last year. With a strong front, he's going to remind a lot of us why we brought him in. I've said it many times, but I don't believe that a slam dunk pass-rush monster can be had as late as we drafted in the first. If this mythical beast existed in this draft, I believe the Pats would have grabbed him with one of their second rounders. Would have been nice to take a gamble in the 2nd on potential, but you won't hear me complaining about lack of drafting an OLB this time around. It just wasn't in the cards.
