I guess this means Coles is going to be cut or retire. On a serious note, Leonhard can't remain as the punt returner at his age, with his injury history, and his value as a coach on the field. It appears the Jets may have drafted a punt returner as well as a slot or 4th receiver.
WR Jeremy Kerley: "I’m definitely a special teams guy... My special teams ability is definitely what makes me the player that I am."
I told you guys we were going after a slot receiver way back. Everyone was like hurr-durr Cotchery is solid. NO WE NEEDED A LEGIT SLOT WITH SPEED
Kerley is not going to replace J-co in the slot. If we can't retain holmes and edwards, then cotch moves back outside and Kerley is ready to handle the slot. If we do retain both guys, Kerley plays teams for a year or two before we move on from one of the trio and he steps in as an elite slot guy in the near future.
Cotchery's not a slot receiver. If the imaginary creatures on the board told you he was, they were wrong. Congratulations.
I'm guessing that was mostly the people who didn't know the difference between playing in the slot and being #3 on the depth chart.
Second day of training camp praise for this kid "Rookie WR Jeremy Kerley, a fifth-round pick, was the player of the day. He made catch after catch, displaying acceleration and exceptional cutting ability. He had a couple of nice hook-ups with QB Mark Sanchez, who raved about him afterward: "He's a baller. There's always one big surprise at camp. For a guy who didn't know much of the playbook, he's picked it up really fast."" http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...nes?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
My buddy was at camp today and said Kerley was by far the player who looked the best in drills. Short, quick, great route runner.
The first part of your post is a bit deceiving, along with the article i posted. How many other WR's for the Jets practiced? Just him?
NJ.com - Jets see a more complete squad for first padded practice http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2011/08/jets_see_a_more_complete_squad.html I'm not surprised at all to hear Sanchez say this. At practice on 8/3, Kerley was easily the player who stood out the most to me. He was getting after it on kick returns, and made at least two or three great grabs on erratic throws by Sanchez. I'm expecting him to push for playing time not just on special teams, but for slot WR time as well. If there was one thing that made me feel more at ease when Cotchery's release was announced, it's what I've seen of Kerley in vids and on the field last Tuesday.
This kid may be the main reason that FO let Cotch go, I hope he will develop some nice chemistry w/ Sanchez during camp, this pick could have been a steal.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T96UG9xfmS8
This guy is apparently the MVP of the preseason, hes going to fill Brady Smiths role and be a return man.
