I hope so. ...kind of just wishful thinking. Gilbert definitely has enough talent to contribute by then. It'd be nice to have a rotation of Mike DeVito, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Jarron Gilbert/Marcus Dixon. The staff seems to be pretty high on Marcus Dixon, so he could be the practice squad guy that steps up this off-season and earns a roster spot.
Wilk's head coach Al Golden was a god send to the school and had them become very competitive and Golden was so good that he went from little ol' Temple to becoming the head coach of the Hurricanes. He held his own against a very good center in Wiesenwski of PSU.
Gilbert's definitely a big boy, I'd love to see him develop enough to play a major role on this team, and knowing coaches like Rex ansd Pettine, they're probably salivating at the thought of coaching him up to be that guy. I love this pick. They've been missing some beef on the line and Wilkerson certainly provides it. This defense isn't the same when Jenkins gets hurt, which is saying a ton, because they are a top 5 defense WITHOUT a dominant, big, D-lineman.
Great, now the Jets players are going to have to keep an eye on him on plane rides. To the OP, I hate doom and gloom posts on draft day...
This is the kind of pick that we've been wanting for a few years. FINALLY some youth on the defensive line. Hopefully Shaun Ellis is re-signed so he can tutor these young guys. If we can grab a pass rusher and a safety this weekend, all of a sudden, our aging defense will be a lot younger.
Bottom line is, we need beef & talent on the DL, and we just got it. Among Wilkerson and the other young guys to throw into the rotation, our Front-7 should be solid with Rex/Pettine orchestrating. I cannot complain about this pick at all.
Yeah, I was just gonna say that with our next pick, if we somehow can land another Front-7 player, specifically a pass-rusher, who can contribute relatively soon, then this D should see its weaknesses diminish greatly.
I said this in another thread...re-signing him, to me at least, is a must. He can still perform and is a workhorse the younger guys will learn from. One of our all-time most underrated players...
I was thinking about what our future DL could look like too. Wilkerson and DeVito will be here a long time. Pouha in my opinion still has at least 3 years in his legs. Maybe not all as a starter, in two years he might become DeVito's backup at NT. I expect one between Ellis and Pryce to be re-signed for a one year deal. After that you have 2/3/4 places available. I wouldn't be surprised if Dixon, Gilbert, Pitoitua and Tevaseau all make the roster this year. so to sum it up... DE: Ellis, Wilkerson, Gilbert NT: Pouha, Tevaseau DT: DeVito, Pitoitua, Dixon not bad not bad... except Ellis and maybe a NT if Tevaseau doesn't pan out that's a young line to build around for a while...
I wish we could get Sheard, but I don't think it's in the Jets' best interest to move up to where he'll likely go. I hope the Jets focus on defense picks until at least the 5th round rd. I wouldn't be too thrilled with a WR in the earlier rounds when they need a safety and pass rusher more, but you never know when a certain player presents too good of an opportunity to pass up.
This is your obvious quintiessential bullshit thread that we all knew was going to come along for any pick we make.
Agreed but it's also unfair to rule out the eventuality atm... he'll get his chance in TC to prove he's 100% recovered... and if he is DE actually becomes a pretty crowded position on our roster. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't re-sign neither Ellis nor Pryce... which might not be a bad thing considering we need to concentrate on Cro and a WR.
thinking about it......this was a bad thread. Wilkerson is a complete steal i never said anything about him because all along i was thinking wed be lucky if Ayers or Heyward were even there at 30 let alone Wilkerson. ppl forget how great ellis has been and hes on his way out. someone has to pick up where he left off. and the guy can rush the passer and push the pocket just as valuable as having the edge guy and even more important for our run defense to stay stout
I wanted a D-lineman or an OLB with this pick. I got one of those. I cant argue with this pick at all. Everywhere you read everybody says its a great value pick at #30. The Jets clearly needed help on the D-Line. As Warren Sapp says "It starts upfront". This guy will only help our pass rush by opening up lanes for our LB's to shoot through as well as create pressure himself.
Why? Because they're both white boys with long hair? I'm glad that Rex and Tanny aren't drafting guys based on hair cuts. Did you watch any of the videos of this guy? He was an absolute monster and he already wants to cause destruction.... I like when my defensive players talk about destruction.
Thanks for the link, This guy is like a freight train, so much for running inside on us this year. lol
