...wouldn't want to see him selected with the 30th overall pick, but I wouldn't mind trading back and taking him in the middle of the second.
Thinking the same thing. With the bone condition I'd be happy if the Jets slotted back and picked him up at pick 45 or so. Can't see him falling past 50.
A Red Flag for Phil Taylor? Rich Cimini A red flag for Phil Taylor? April, 17, 2011 Apr 1712:13PM By Rich Cimini- For weeks, the Jets have been linked in pre-draft speculation to mammoth Baylor NT Phil Taylor, but now comes word that Taylor has a foot condition that may cause him to drop. Taylor's MRI exams at the scouting combine reveal that he has bones growing together in both feet, according to a report by Rob Rang of CBSSports.com. The condition, according to the report, is inoperable. Taylor can play, but it's a pain-tolerance issue. Because of his size (334 pounds), this has to be a concern. Taylor played 44 games in college, including 13 starts last season for Baylor, so it obviously wasn't a debilitating injury. The Jets have been known to take chances on players with pre-existing conditions. In 2003, they used the fourth overall pick on DT Dewayne Robertson, who had a degenerative condition (no cartilage) in one knee. He never missed any games for the Jets, but he never became the player they envisioned. In 2004, the Jets chose LB Jonathan Vilma 12th overall even though he had a degenerative bone condition in one knee -- ultimately requiring surgery in 2005. He was traded to the Saints and has become a top linebacker.

Even though I haven't hated Taylor like many, and would have been happy with his being picked at #30 previously, there's no way I'd take the kid now until at least the 4th round. I'm not doctor, but it sounds as if there's nothing that can be done. Surgery won't help, neither will physical therapy or meds. There's always the danger he could get hooked on pain meds. He'll probably wind up missing practices and games. The condition will probably lead to osteoarthritis. I googled the condition but couldn't find a medical site with info, though did find a blog where some people with the condition wrote in asking for help. They said they were on their feet alot and their feet were killing them. Taylor has already had weight issues earlier in college. In order to minimize the pain and stress on the bones, he needs to lose weight, but it will be hard for him to do that because the pain could prevent his doing a lot of conditioning work during the offseason. In all likelihood, if he has any chance of having any kind of lengthy career, he needs to be drafted by a team that plays on grass, not turf. I hate it for the kid. I hope some team will take him in the 2nd round and he can earn some decent money for at least the length of his rookie contract. I'd be surprised if he's around much longer than that, however. I expect that it will severely curtain his effectiveness and the length of his career.
I already thought this guy didn't belong in the first round, no way he belongs there now. I don't think he will be the best NT in this draft anyway. Blah, I can't see the Jets picking him up, I just can't. At least not in the early rounds.
just found the time to check back in here and retract my statement with the recent velocil raptor foot bone discovery
I see today that it is being claimed that CBS' story isn't true. Supposedly some teams hoping that Taylor would drop lied to CBS which spurred the story.
He's still not first round worthy, and do you have a link because I can't see teams lying about this kid. He really isn't good enough to be throwing out false rumors about. Just saying.
meandean, Below is both the link and the text that was posted on another Jets' site. I'm not sure why the major sites haven't picked up on it, so take it for what it's worth. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?sl...ut_phil_taylors_feet_says_he_checked_out_fine
I'm not saying I want this to happen, but I'm starting to get the feeling that this is the guy we're targeting.
now that the report was officially bs I'm back on the bandwaggon. of course id prefer Ayers/Heyward but I also think this board is forgetting what kind of impact a athletic NT can have. if the Jets Staff has the confidence in him and he actually performs you easily can kick pouha out to DE. and rotate him back at NT if Taylor needs a spell in which Ropati Pitouitua or DeVito could spell Pouha's vacated DE slot. aside from flashes of Ellis, our DL is all run stoppers. Taylor would definitely command double teams and shows the ability to push the pocket in a 2 gap system. thus making even the DE's jobs easier. i just saw a mock draft and i got sick cause it had the Pats nabbing Carimi/Heyward in the 1st and Brooks Reed with their 2nd rd pick. which is very realistic. Taylor is not the sexy pick but like you said he seems to me like someone Rex himself would be vouching for just out of sheer size/power/athleticism. plus everyone who seems to like Taylor but not enough in the first round usually thinks Ellis will be sitting there with our 3rd rd. i think Ellis goes late 2nd /early 3rd.
