Why Acho over Sheard? It has to do with watching them myself. When I watch the two guys play, Acho jumps out at me more than Sheard. Acho has that game speed and tenacity that you just love to see. Sheard has plays more physical and shows more power. Personally, I am speed over power guy, and thats where I prefer Acho. You can teach power with technique and proper strength programs. Speed is completely unteachable. You can give a speed guy some power, not as much as a guy with natural power can attain, but you can give him something to work with. But you can't teach a guy with natural power enough speed to beat NFL OT's around the edge.

Plus when i watch the two guys, there is something about Acho that I can't put my finger on that makes me positive the guy has what it takes to succeed at the next level. Couple that with my personal belief that Sheard is overrated (by this board), and you get my pick. I don't mean to make it sound like Sheard is not a 2nd round guy, he is, but he is a late two in my mind.

Based on who was available when we traded out of 30 (in my mock of course) My top three guys (from an OLB standpoint) would have been, in order

    1. Brooks Reed
    2. Sam Acho
    3. Jabaal Sheard

Reed obviously was taken, and so i took the next guy, Acho. But if Acho was taken before 46, Sheard was my guy. Its part of the reason the Jets should be confident enough to trade down to the mid-40's if possible. they have 3 guys that all would be great fits here. At least 1 will still be available in the mid 40's.

Thanks for the additional comments. Obviously, I missed the Cimini article and related thread here. Good reading between the lines on your part. I think it was a smart move for other reasons as well. One, the Jets do need a long term backup for Sanchez and Ron Wolf was smart. The Packers got some additional high picks for those QBs that helped build their roster. Two, the Jets have now planted the possibility, even though it is remote, that they could take Dalton. This could be just enough to induce some team to sweeten their offer to the Jets to move up to #30, or even if they move up ahead of the Jets, it could cause a player the Jets like and want to fall to them.

As for Williams, as I said the disagreement is minor, and you could be right. Your rationale is sound. I can't fault you there at all. You're right about it only being a part of the puzzle and about some of the rankings being odd. As I said, I was really surprised that Williams was rated as a 6th rounder.

I also agree that getting Jarrett at #76 at the expense of a front 7 player would be a luxury. That's why I would have stuck with Jenkins or taken Ellis.

If the Jets take Fua, I hope you're right about him. I'd rather have a better NT, but particularly where the Jets are picking and likely to be picking in future years, he may be their best bet if they don't take Ellis or Taylor.

like i said originally with fua, worst case I see him as the biggest part of a rotation at NT (2 years from now anyways) and best case, he is a full time starter thats a very similar player to Pouha.

Likely its a moot point, I would have to say its unlikely that he lasts till the end of the 4th, but stranger things have happened and I put him there because I would say its 50/50 on him reaching there. If he is, I feel he will be bpa and definately should be the selection.

Nice work, rule. It's nice to see well-thought opinions in this forum.

I'd be excited if our draft went this way.

i feel silly bringing this up because its a good mock and just a slip up, but how is Jake Locker going to play for both the Bills and the Vikings as he was selected by both in the 2nd round..... LOL

good job though. Although I dont see the Jets trading down, even if it makes sense I don't see Tanny trading down, doesnt he hate it?

Rule.....that was an excellent mock draft.

IMO, there will be trading down opportunities and there aren't many players that will be available at #30 that really are "must have players".

I love Acho and believe his stock is rising. Very intelligent player on and off the field. If we do trade back into early/mid rd 2, Acho has to be strongly considered.

I'd rather draft Jarrett with our 1st pick in Rd 3.

I had Fua in my latest mock in rd 3, I doubt he lasts to Rd 4.

Also had Kerley in my latest mock draft, Jets have shown interest.

Great job. I don't get why people wouldn't be thrilled to have Fua. In addition to what's already been stated, he already has experience in the 3-4 (and excelled) under a DC with NFL experience who just made his return to the NFL with the 49ers. He won't take nearly as much grooming as some may think.

its not as though he has never traded down ever. But he has to see there are at least a handful of players on the board with all but equal grades, and of course the opportunity to move down has to be there.

As far as Locker, thats a good call, I figured I had to have messed up something, but its a great catch. I would think the vikes would avoid Mallet like the plague, opting for Stanzi in the fourth. So there they would look at somebody to help their aging defense there. Probably a corner, perhaps Jimmy Smith. Since he went to the Lions it would obviously start a ripple effect totally cripling my draft... but thats how it goes... Good catch.

like i mentioned to Klecko, I considered taking Jarret at 76. But the way I see it is, we are ok at safety, Our DL is in desperate need of assistance. We have to make sure we come away with a DL player there (so goes my thinking) who fits our scheme, really I am looking at Jenkins and Ellis. Is one definately going to fall to 94? I don't know, in fact I seriously doubt it. I feel better with Jenkins/Ellis and Deunta Williams than I do with Jarret and not getting one of the two DL.

I think in the end it also comes down to your opinion of the safeties in play here. If you think Williams is going to be a starter with high end potential (like me) This is the best path for the Jets. However, if you feel Williams is going to a decent football player, solid ST guy who may start one day your not going to like the pick.

Jarret I believe is a solid starter, but won't ever be a top line player who is a major difference maker back there. Which is why I don't value him as much as you guys do. Would I be happy to have him? Hell yes, but to get a 4 year starter who is just as talented a few picks later after netting the DL guy we need is a better scenario to me.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe Jarret has future all-pro written all over him, and Williams has a sign around his neck (5 years from now) saying will work for food. But I just don't see it that way.

Then again, I sure as hell don't claim to be the quality of draftnik that you guys are. I mean you live and breathe the stuff, I just try to pick it up in the offseason as a hobby.

I did mention that about Fua, I am doubting he makes it to the end of the fourth, but like I said in a previous post (i have it as 50/50 and that might be way over estimating the odds) if he is there he almost has to be the pick. But my rationale here, is that so many DL have been taken by teams already, that most teams are going to pass on the DL talent in rounds 3-4 ( I already started to see guys slipping in the second) because they already took 1 in the first two round. Meaning that he, and others, may slide a little bit simply because so many teams can't afford to double dip on the line so early on... To back up my claim, I had 19 different teams draft DL talent in the first two rounds...

As for kerley, I actually believe I stole that one from you. Couple that with the interest we have shown, I think if he is around this late, he will be a Jet. That said, I personally have him as a 5th rounder, but all of the value sites I checked with had him as a 6th round guy, so I deferred to them on this one...

Another great point about Fua. too be honest, I wouldnt be shocked at all to see Harbaugh take him in the 4th (he would earlier, but I took all his picks!) and turn him into a stud. For some reason I think the college kids will work twice as hard if they get drafted by their college coach on the next level. Damn coach really likes me as a player, I have to make sure he's proven right...

    Some good points.

Jarrett vs Williams...both should be solid NFL players. I actuallly like Williams a lot, but I really like Jarrett's upside slightly better. I'd be fine with either player. I've been watching quite a bit of film and Jarrett really stands out. Jarrett punishes the opponent and is one of the hardest hitting safeties in College football. Terrific in run support and has decent coverage skills with some room to improve. I'm glad Jarrett had a visit to Floram Park, at least he's on the Jet's radar.

My slight concern with your Jet's draft, I'd like to see another CB added in later round since you added more picks with the trade. So instead of Jenkins and Fua, maybe a player like Jalil Brown.

all good points about Jarret, but part of the reason you love him, is part of the reason he worries me. You mentioned how much of a punisher he is back there, well history shows more often than not, those guys end up knocking themselves out of the league a lot earlier than they would have otherwise. They don't just deliver the blow, they have to deal with the shock as well. Look at Eric Smith and Brodney Pool. Smith has what 3 concussions? Pool claims he only has one, but don't doubt that if he gets another one, he is likely to be forced out of the league...

Don't get me wrong I love a good hard hitting safety, I want our guys back their knocking heads in, but couple the added injury risk with the new rules (preventing safeties from knocking heads in) its going to make a guy like Jarret a bit of a concern. Smith again comes to mind, how many penalties has he gotten this past year? I don't even considered him a head hunter but he has to lead the jets in "defenseless receiver" penalties....

But I mean it is like I said, its a differing opinion on the safties, I see Jarret as a future starter with potential, pretty similar grade on Williams, meaning that i'm ok with the lesser of the two. You have Jarret as being a stud in the making. It's not a surprise you want him and are willing to take the risk that one of the DL may not be there at 94.

To be honest, never occured to me to think CB. I think we are set there if Cro returns. If he doesn't I expect us to find a vet in FA to push Wilson as the starter, and or become the Nickel.

Jarrett reminds me of Brian Dawkins, who has had a long career in the NFL. I thinks it's difficult to assume Jarrett will be injury prone cause he hits hard.

I didnt mean to imply he would be injury prone. You can certainly name plenty of guys like Dawkins who had long careers knocking heads in. I just said its a concern. I would bet for every one guy who is able to have a long sustained generally injury free career, there are 2 guys who fall injury prone and are out of the league.

Even setting aside the argument of him opening himself up to injuries, you can't deny he will have to transition his style of play from looking to knock people out all the time, to having to pick and choose when to lay the wood. every defensive player in the league is having to retrain themselves to make sure they aren't hitting the head of the offensive players...

I agree in part, but we know the Jets are no longer averse to character risks and with the question marks in FA, our biggest needs as of today are Wr and DL. Literally zero depth. 3 of our 4best wr's are unsigned right now and noone knows how this will play out. I'm not saying they should draft a WR this high, but wouldn't be shocked. Austin is similar and still a first rounder in at least half the mocks ve seen.

Agreed. Victor Green was a hard hitter and he had a pretty long career with the Jets.

The Jets can't plan on fixing their receiver issues with baldwin. He isn't a guy who can be there tall big threat (aka edwards) because he isnt physical enough or the shifty elusive speedster that is Holmes, because well, he is neither one of those. Baldwin is a headcase and I don't think the Jets have room on their roster for a diva receiver who places himself above the team.

Also Austin is an issue being out of the game for over a year, and not a top talent. He could be great, but I think its more likely he follows the Mike Williams path (the guy who was out of the league for a year, and came in and subsequently was useless).

In short, I don't think either guy is a good fit. Couple that with our biggest need is a rush OLB and a guy like Acho or even Sheard is on the board, we can't pass them up for one of the aforementioned duo.
