***Trade, 49ers move back into round 1 for their QB of the future

Jets receive 49ers 2nd round pick (45th overall), 3rd round pick (76th overall), 7th round pick (210th overall), 662.4 points on the trade value chart

Jets give 1st round pick (30th overall) 5th round pick (161th overall) 647 points on the trade value chart

Why the 49ers want to do the trade: The 49ers are sure that if they don’t move up, they won’t get the QB they want, Andy Dalton. They are worried that they might not be able to even get a QB if they stay at 45, so they move up 15 spots to be sure they not only get a QB, they get the one they really covet. They realize they are shorted somewhat in the trade, but they covet their guy more than they worry about being shorted a small amount of points.

Why the Jets want to do the trade: The pickings at 30 are almost a worst case scenario, they either need to reach for a guy who isn’t really a first round talent, or they have to find a trading partner. Luckily for the Jets, they were able to coax a team into moving up for a QB so the Jets can find value later on.

    Jets mock draft:

2nd round (45): Sam Acho, OLB Texas

We need a pass rushing OLB, by dropping back, we are able to obtain some value, and get one of the last players in the 2nd tier of Rush OLB’s. We hope Reed falls to this spot, but when he doesn’t, we will be just fine snagging Sam Acho. He has quickly become a favorite of mine, and I don’t think it would take very long before becoming a fan favorite in NY. As a rookie he would be asked to simply go get the QB on third down, and he has the talent to do pretty well in that role early on. I could see him developing enough that he could take over for Cactus in certain situations by year’s end. He won’t be a 10 sack guy as a rookie, but by year 3 I think he can definitely be the pass rushing threat we so desperately need.

    3rd round (76): Jarvis Jenkins, DE/NT, Clemson

For all the love Kenrick Ellis has been getting around here, I can’t understand why Jenkins isn’t getting any. Jenkins and Ellis are fairly similar prospects and have the ability to play the same type of role, where they can play both inside or outside on a 3-4 line. Hopefully one of the two is still here, because we certainly could make good use of either one. Jenkins is very athletic big man, who has a good burst off the snap. He has the shown the ability to be a great gap penetrator and he sheds blocks very well at the point of attack. As a 3-4 player, he will need to become a better anchor on the line but in the end he is a very smart player who seems to never give up on a play, and just fits the type of mold Rex Ryan will love. More or less, I see him as being a more athletic Mike Devito who will develop some pass rushing ability. He won’t get the sack number Ellis has gotten us over the years, but he will be an above average sack guy as far as 3-4 ends go.

    3rd round (94): Deunta Williams, S, UNC

If it weren’t for his injury I think he would be considered the top safety prospect, he broke his leg in his final game as a senior. He was a 4 year starter at UNC, so he is definitely experienced. He is great at dissecting the play, and has great instincts. Good but not elite ball skills (12 ints). He isn’t afraid to lay the wood, and has developed a reputation as a bit of a heavy hitter. He isn’t afraid to play the run, in fact he may be a little too eager to get in on the run support, can occasionally be caught biting on the PA fake. Overall, Williams has the ability to develop in Rex’s scheme and become a long time starter opposite Leonhard here in NY. He definitely will be somebody Jets fans will love having in the defensive backfield for years to come. Williams has all the potential in the world and Rex will do wonders with this kid.

    4th round (126): Sione Fua, DE/NT, Stanford

I can already hear the cries of TGG nation, double dipping this early? Well it might be a little early to do so, but Fua simply presents too much value to pass up. If he is there at the end of the 4th round, I find it hard to envision a scenario where he isn’t the BPA at a position of need. Sione will take time to develop, but I expect that 2-3 years down the line he will come into his own and be a very good starter in our front seven, not unlike our very own Sione Pouha. He has great upper body strength, but at times he can be overwhelmed by some mauler type interior lineman. At the next level he will have to become a better anchor along his defensive line, but with Rex, Pettine and Carrier as his coaches, he will learn in no time flat. I expect him to be an important part of the DL rotation and may eventually develop into a full time starter. It should also be noted, that I believe Jenkins future is on the outside as a 3-4 DE and Fua’s future is on the inside at NT. Although, both players have the potential to play either spot on the line in a pinch.

6th round (194): Jeremy Kerley, WR, TCU

The Jets were so interested to get a good look at this kid, they made sure when they worked him out, they also brought in his QB Andy Dalton, and subsequently cost themselves a chance to visit with another prospect. By bringing in Dalton, they were able to work out Kerley so he would be working with his QB so he could show them exactly what he was capable of. If this doesn’t show we are seriously interested in the kid, I don’t know what would. Kerley is the prototypical slot guy, quick, shifty, great route runner, stellar hands. Year 1 he could be a ST guy and play receiver in special situations assuming of course we keep Edwards, Holmes and Cotch. In the future he would be our slot guy when we move on from one of the aforementioned trio. If we aren’t able to retain all 3 guys, then Kerley will be ready to play the slot from the get go, and he will be just fine there.

7th round (208): Ricky Henry, OG, Nebraska

The better of the two interior lineman from Nebraska. The last time a late round OL prospect from Nebraska was available, we drafted him, and let him sit for a year before we turned him into a more than capable starter. I have no doubt that if either Henry, or Keith Williams is still on the board when we pick in the 7th, Callahan will request we draft them. Callahan has more information on these guys than any scout in the NFL. He recruited them out of high school and then he coached them at Nebraska. If he says that either one can succeed at the next level, Tanny won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.

7th round (210): Ugo Chinasa, OLB, Ok State

With most of our needs addressed so far, I decided to double dip at rush OLB. Chinasa likely won’t contribute much as a rookie outside of ST, Chinasa will need to add some weight and muscle to his 6’5” frame. He needs to work on his ability to play the run, but is a natural pass rusher. I don’t know much about his ST ability, but I have a feeling Westhoff can mold him into a ST demon thanks to his solid measurables. Chinasa definitely has potential as a pass rusher, and that’s why I think he will get drafted. If he can learn to play the run, he can turn into a situational pass rusher who could be used in the role we had expected to use Taylor in last year.

This was far more difficult than I expected it would be. I have never done a 3 round mock before and it was definitely challenging. I spent the better part of a week organizing the whole thing, chasing down team needs, rotating through the various teams needs, double checking with fan pages, common sense and depth charts. It’s a lot more research than I expected it to be, and that’s just for organizing things for the top positions I wanted to address for each team. Then you toss in the players, where I have a good handle on the first round guys, but beyond that double, triple and quadruple checking multiple sites and our 3 round mock here to make sure the values made sense and that I wasn’t leaving off any of the obvious suspects.

At first I planned to predict a myriad of trades, but that proved to be far more difficult than I expected. So I then cut it down to a single trade, the one involving the Jets.

In the end, this really developed into a need based mock after round 1, where teams reached a little bit for needs, as a result I saw some talented guys slide a little bit more than expected, but I feel that after the first round, the teams who went BPA (in round 1) have no choice but to address their biggest need in the second round, even if it might be a reach. One such example is the Cowboys, I just can’t see Jerry Jones taking an OL in the first round, I don’t think he can help himself when there is a talent like Amukamara available at 9. That means he has to get the best OT available in the second, even if it means reaching by a good half round of value. This is going to be magnified 10x over this year, because there is no FA available to solve the various needs throughout the offseason. As a result I believe that we are going to see teams with needs start reaching as early as the 2nd round, and as a result some guys are going to slide that normally wouldn’t. It is going to be a challenge to force yourself to continue to go BPA throughout, without any ideas how FA can help you build a great team. But if anyone can do it, I am betting on Tanny to get it done.

At the end, I also found certain teams to be really frustrating, doing all the background research and determining which types of positions they are looking to fill, expecting there will be solid value available, only to get there and finding there is no value there at a position of need. The Saints are the first team that comes to mind, in the first Wilkerson falls into their lap, and they are happy to have him, after that, things go south. In the second I have them taking Sturdivant, but to me it’s not the best fit, they need youth at the LB position, but I feel Sturdivant is more of an early 3rd guy than a 2nd round guy. In the third, I felt they reached a bit again both for Hunter and for Gilchrist. All I can say is I’m glad the Jets are not in their shoes, I also do not envy the Saints GM at all.

In the end it was a fun experience that I may be open to repeating in the future, but for now all I can say is thank goodness it’s finally done. Questions, comments appreciated.

I like the trade down but if they do it, I doubt they pass on Baldwin or Austin. Great job.

Real solid draft. The first 5 picks at a minimum would be solid contributors right away.

If Tanny was ever going to trade down this should be the year. There is a ton of value in rounds 2-5 so he should try to get extra picks.

3 rounds is brave. Overall it looks pretty tight.
i can totally see teams like Washington and San Fran looking to sneak back into round 1 for Ponder or Dalton.
If Gabbert there at 10, Washington will be all over it. i think he's gone though, and Ponder becomes plan B.

A move like that would make sense for the QB needing teams, as well as the Jets.
I was surprised to see the value chart indicating we cough up our 5th though.

I really like this draft, the only exception would be using one of those third or the fourth round pick on Jerrell Powe. I'm not as high as on Fua as other people are.

Also on a totally unrelated note, according to Russ Lande's mock draft. The Jets will pass on JJ Watt for Phil Taylor at 30. Pretty sure if that happened Id hurt myself

I was too, which is why I figured if Tanny has to toss in a 5th, to make the deal, san fran can toss us their 7th, so we at least come out ahead in terms of # of picks

as far as gabbert, I think if he gets by buffalo/cincy, he goes to 10. I think buffalo has locked onto Miller, and Cincy doesnt want to give up on palmer just yet, so they get him the best player in the draft in Green. Then at 5 zona would only look at Gabbert if all of Dareus, Peterson, and Miller are gone (Miller is #1 on their board imo) which I think is highly unlikely at this point. Cleveland has Mccoy, and San Fran I really believe wants Dalton. Tennessee doesn't buy Gabbert, and with Fairly on the board, its a no brainer pass for them. Which means Gabbert to Washington...

If that happened, mass suicides among Jets nation, and people might drive to tannys office with intentions of murder...

Powe's intelligence issues have him squarely as a 5th rounder as far as I can tell. Since the Jets don't have a 5th, he wasn't an option that presented value at the time. Also, I on the other hand, am pretty high on fua, and think he will be great in a rotation at the nose, and could become what we currently have in Sione Pouha. Which is pretty damn good for a 4th rounder imo.

Academic issues seem to speak more to character than they do actual game intelligence. Personally, I don't read to much into it. If Powe falls to round 5 I would be surprised. I can see why Fua would be good, I think he is going to be a good anchor for a nose tackle at the next level. That said I think Powe has more upside

Where do I start? First of all, GREAT job!!!! I like this mock draft better than any other I have seen. Of course I like trading down and garnering an additional high pick. I really like the players you took. It is almost a fantasy mock. I know it takes a lot of preparatory work and organization, and I thank you for your hard work onj our behalf. Kudos to you on a great job!

I LOVE the fact that you double dip on both the DL and at OLB. I definitely think you're right that without FA, teams will draft for need after the first, and some will do it in the first.

I love getting Kerley. I hadn't seen it posited that the Jets invited Dalton to the workout just to get a better look at Kerley, but that's certainly possible, and was very smart, if true. Did you read that somewhere?

I don't know anything specifically about Henry, but like adding an OL late. If Denarius Moore is still there, I might be tempted to take him, instead, as depth at WR is needed as much as OL depth.

I also like the Chinasa pick. Again, I haven't seen him play, but like what I've read about him, and do like taking another OLB prospect. I don't know if Gabe Miller, OLB from Ore. St. is seen as a UDFA or a 7th rounder, but I might be tempted to go with Miller over Chinasa if he's likely to get drafted. Otherwise, I seek to sign Miller as a UDFA if he goes undrafted. Three OLB prospects gives a lot greater odds of at least one of them developing into a solid starter than two. If they all work out, great, they also have better depth than they've ever had at the position.

I only have two minor disagreements with you. One is with your statement that Jenkins could play NT. I do not see him as an NT at all. I think he's strictly a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT. Maybe with more strength and weight he could, but if he can't hold the poa at DE, he certainly won't be able to at NT.

The other is taking Deunta Williams in the 3rd round. I think that's too high. The PFA Chart where NFL teams are surveyed has him as a 6th round pick. While that is probably too low, I think the 3rd round is too high. You may be right, however, and he is a good prospect definitely. I'd rather have Jaiquawn Jarrett, but if WW85 is right, he will become an Iggle earlier in the 3rd than we could pick him at #94.

If I didn't like Jenkins so much, I'd be sorely tempted to take either Jarrett or Ellis at #76. In fact, I'd definitely rather have Ellis than Fua, and Ellis and Cedric Thornton over Jenkins and Fua, so I probably would take Ellis at #76 and either reach for Thornton in the 4th, or trade down and try to take him in the 5th, but if things work out your way, I'd be very happy with Jenkins and Fua too. I could be wrong about Fua, as I haven't seen him play that much, but he seems to me to be a more one-dimensional run stuffer. I'm not sure he'll ever be a 3 down NT, but as I said, I could be wrong.

Anyway, thanks again. I hope Tanny will see it and get some ideas! LOL

What? I'd be shocked if they took either. Baldwin has been dropping and I wouldn't want Austin at all. Both are character risks and I don't think either is that good.

I don't think youi need to worry about that. Lande must be delusional or delirious to think Watt would drop like that or that the Jets wouldn't take him. I've seen that mock and it's crazy.

I'm not that high on Fua, either, but wouldn't touch Powe. Anyone this day and age who is illiterate is trouble.

All i got to say is hell of a fucking job man, I understand how hard these are and how much time they take up and you did one heck of a job on the Jets draft and three rounds. Id critque each pick but its easter and I dont have too much time to type up something up but I love the Jets draft, it addresses great positions at certain picks and I love the trade back.

    Again, solid job.

I definitely respect the time and effort that it takes to do one of these round mocks, so kudos on that.

I am just wondering why you went Acho here? I have always thought of him as a third round talent. Additionally wanted to know if there is a reason you liked him over Sheard

Thanks for the comments, yes it definately was a ton of work organizing it so thanks for that.

As for Kerley working out with us at the same time as Dalton, it was brought up in the Jets Worked out Andy Dalton thread... Also Manish had it in an article I believe about tanny and the 5 heads to his scouting dept. Edit: Actually it was a Cimini article where Tanny discussed it. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/5146/mike-t-talks-draft-holmes-qbs

Essentially, you have to read between the lines a little. But really its the only explanation. Tanny isnt really about to use a 1rst or 2nd round pick (which we currently don't even have) on Dalton. So despite his excuse of well, you never know.... It has to be for a different reason. It would be one thing, but since it costs us the ability to have a private workout with another player (discussed in the Dalton thread), the only thing that makes sense is the fact we wanted more info on Kerley. We wanted to see what he could do with the guy he has been working with for years.

As for Jenkins, I think he has the ability to hold at the POA, and with an NFL strength program, coupled with being taught how to do it, he can handle the nose. If I didnt get it across properly, I'm sorry, I didnt mean it to sound as though he should be a full time player at the nose. Just that he can be part of the rotation there (much like Devito is now). Allowing him to play there a handful of snaps a game allowing the others to get a breather. One of the keys to a great DL rotation is having guys be versatile enough to handle snaps all over the line, they may be best in one spot, but for 5 snaps a game allowing some of the big boys to run off and get a breather while Jenkins handles the nose would be highly benificial.

Part of the reason he is such a great 2 gap penetrator is because thats what he was taught how to do at Clemson, its the system they play. They weren't a 3-4 team where it was imperative for him to hold his ground and as result he has a lack of experience there. Once Rex, Pettine and Carrier get their hands on him, they will have him in the weight room, film room and spending all of his time learning how to control the POA. An athlete like him shouldnt need a ton of time to get accustomed to that role.

As far as Williams, we will have to disagree I guess. I mentioned how I was double triple and quadruple checking the values of some prospects? one of the places I was looking was that exact chart. While its a great guide, some of it is just wacky. Brooks Reed is a 3rd rounder, Aaron Williams is the top Safety (ranked in the first round, 1B category, meaning he is a 2nd teir round 1 player) Locker is also a 1B guy, while Kaepernick is late 3, with Ricky Stanzi. You can not tell me Kaepernick isn't miles better as a prospect than Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi has potential, but Kaepernick has that and then everything you actually look for in a QB.

What I am really getting at here, is that charts like the PFW chart, are only one piece of the consideration, at the end of the day you have to have your own feel of the prospects. Williams is a guy I like, and I really think that if it wasn't for his broken leg, couple with him being suspended for 4 games at the beggining of the year, he would have been the top safety and probably be looked at as a guy we should be hoping for at 30. When you can get that type of value at the end of the third you take it and run.

As for Jarret, I like him as well, but as you said, I mocked him to the eagles at 85. It was something I toyed with (taking Jarret at 76) and hoping that in my mock either Jenkins or ellis fell to 94, but in the end I knew we had to have the DL help and Jarret was the luxury. This way we still end up with a damn good prospect in Williams, but also get the DL infusion we had to have.

On Fua, I really see him developing into Sione Pouha. Half the board is going to read that and say "What the hell are we drafting him for if we have his carbon copy on the roster?" The answer is obvious, Pouha is already 32, and while he is a young 32, we have to start planning for the future now. Fua will take 2-3 years to come into his own, convieniently around the time Pouha breaks down. So when Pouha falls off, Fua will be ready to step in and we won't even miss a beat. With Fua we are going to get some quality snaps his first two years, but not enough to where people are going to be prepared to depend on him full time. But once he refines his technique, adds a little bit of weight and muscle, he is going to hold the nose down in run support. He isn't ever going to be the NT we had with a healthy Kris Jenkins. But then again, Jenkins, Wilfork and Ngata are really the only three guys capable of doing those things. Fua will do a lot of good things here. But like Pouha he is going to need time to develop his technique and thankfully we have the right coaches in place to make sure any DP's we have along the DL are going to be able to reach their full potential.
