Some aren't my choices, just trying to be objective. Top 11 players that could be available when we are OTC at #30. Not all will be available (no particular order): Akeem Ayers OLB: a pick that seems to make the most sense. A solid player that isn't a pure pass rusher. Ayers can get to the QB but is very good in coverage and reading the play from standing up. Plays faster than timed speed. Ayers versatility is something Rex should like. Ayers would be a work in progress, and should improve in time. (Low Risk) Jimmy Smith CB: If available we might go CB back to back years. Cro and Coleman are FAs and Rex loves and needs corners. Smith is a big CB that is very good in press coverage, perfect for our defense. Has had a few underage drinking incidents and tested positive for Mary Jane 4 years ago. IMO, Jimmy Smith is getting a bumrap, who hasn't partied at a young age. If Smith slips to 30 his value is tremendous, IMO, a late Mid round pick. If Rex couldn't handle Smith, no one will. (Med Risk/High Reward) Mo Wilkerson DE: A player that is very athletic and has good size for the 3-4 DE position. Hasn't faced top tier competition but has shown to dominate at times. Emotional player that you can tell he enjoys football. May take time to develop handling NFL OTs. IMO, not even Temple's best defensive player. Jarrett was Temple's best defensive player in 2010 and more NFL ready. (Med Risk) Phil Taylor NT: A huge NT that is extremely quick on his feet. IMO, the most athletic real big man in this draft. Was only considered a 3 round pick a few months ago. Has risen up the board too quickly. Buyer beware, rumors of foot issues were circulating recently, some think it's BS. Check out medically. (Med/High Risk) Justin Houston DE/OLB: Had a tremndous 2010 getting to the QB. Another true conversion DE to OLB, never really played standing up. IMO, may be better in a 4-3 system. Some question his love for the game and desire. (High Risk) Cameron Heyward DE: A solid player that is the smartest player of the group. Never gives up on a play. Understanding of the game overcomes some of his lack of athletic ability. Still very active and agile for a big man, but not on par with Wilkerson's physical play. A solid player that will replace Ellis for the next 10 years. (Low risk) Brooks Reed DE/OLB: Might be a slight reach. FWIW, Cimini while a jerk at times, has noted numerous times Rex is high on Reed. Even Leberfeld has noted Rex is very intrigued by Reed and loves his motor. (Med Risk) Brandon Harris CB: Shouldn't be available but you never know. Teams trading out of late teens, early mid 20's could push Harris down. A lot of debate by some on who's the 3rd best CB. Harris could step right in right away. IMO, could be one of the best #2 CBs in the NFL. (Low risk) Mikel Leshoure RB: a long shot, depends who's availablr at #30. LT's replacement after 2011. Good compliment with Greene and McK. Terrific RB that is durable and tough. Upright running style in the mold of Eric Dickeron. Has impressive yards per carry and a decent receiver out of the backfield. (Low Rsk) Gabe Carimi OT: A perfect RT for the Jets, if available. BPA trumps all other positions and the Jets get a steal. Only slides if multiple QBs come off the board in late rd 1. (Low Risk) Stephen Paea DL: Injury dropped his stock. Might be better in a 4-3, but don't doubt rex pulling the trigger if available, tremendous talent 10/15 type player. (Low/Med Risk)
I don't see Aldon Smith in your list, WW85. I thought I told you to start fucking believing yesterday.
I don't want to see us draft another corner that high unless it's Prince or Peterson...and that's not happening. This team needs to come out of this draft with at least two defensive front seven players.
For some reason I feel like our first draft pick is either going to be something we aren't thinking of or we are going to trade up or down. Given the Jets past draft history and how much the Rex likes getting d line prospects late in the draft I really don't see them going 3-4 DE with the first pick unless someone like Watt, Jordan, or Paea fell to us (probably not going to happen). This was my prediction back in Dec. and I kind of went away from it. Another reason to think this is because we have so much young talent at the D-line position. Devito and Pouha are already starting which means we just need 1 more player. Even if Ellis doesn't come back which I think he will, we would still pick up a veteran DE that could start. As of now the rest of our dline looks like this, Gilbert, Kroul, Pitoitua, and Dixon. All young players who have tremendous upside Pitoitua has been improving each off season and just got unlucky when he got injured last season. Ever since he has been on the Jets I have been following him. I have paid strict attention to him on every snap in Preseason, and although it is preseason I expect great things. Gilbert was a talent coming out of the draft, (not talking about the jumping out of the pool business) he's strong and had great quickness for a DE. Gilbert came to us mid season and was on the starting roster by the end of the year Rex seems to be high on Dixon as he was given burn last season after being picked up half way through the year. Kroul also made the starting team last year Some, or maybe most of you see these players as unproven, but I am sure that Rex sees differently. Rex has an optimistic mindset, there is no way he doesn't believe that atleast one of these players can start next year. Additionally compare the DE prospects to what we have ATM and tell me which player at DE we could draft and he could make an impact immediately. If the player we draft can't start immediately we are in the same boat as before the draft we just added another player to the boat of young players with upside. Lets take a look at the 3-4 DE / olb prospects that will be around at the time of our pick Akeem Ayers - a Good OLB but lets be honest we don't need another bryan thomas or Calvin Pace. We need a pure pass rusher to reek havoc. Ayers ATM is not that. Mo Wilkerson - In many mocks that I have seen, he wasn't available at pick 30. That being said is he that much of an upgrade over over what gilbert could be? Coming from a smaller school like temple he will need some time to adjust. Phil Taylor Although many see this as a reach. This is the only pick IMO that make sense because the amount of NT's are so limited. That being said, his work ethic and now foot problem is not characteristics that I want in my first round pick. Justin Houston The type of player we need, but most likely will not be there at 30 Cameron Heyward Really don't know much about him but it seems like the consensus of him on this board is that he is a player that shouldn't be coveted Brooks Reed IMO a reach and could be had if we dropped back 7-8 spots. Stephen Paea Besides Watt and Jordan he is one of the only other 3-4 Prospects I like with our pick, but again I am not too sure he will be there at 30 ***WILD CARD*** What do we do if Marvin Austin is available To add to why I think we are going to trade the pick/not draft a de/olb at 30 is because the d lineman/olb that will most likely be ther at 30 have a good chance at being there in the early 2nd round and if not the drop off in talent isn't that drastic.
I literally disagree with almost everything you just typed. Then you listed Marvin Austin as a wild card for 30.. Dude, no. Also, the drop off is significant after the second round for pass rushers, and I feel the drop of along the DL is significant at the end of the first. That's just me though.
I also wouldn't mind Corey Liuget falling into our laps....Rex showed significant interest in him at his pro day.
Banking on gilbert "could" become good (even though already cut from another team) and on pituitua after a SERIOUS injury is how you kill yourself in regards to the draft. You don't pass on your Bpa (hypothetically speaking) for that shit. Marvin Austin? Lo!l. And by the way, dropping back in the draft 7-8 spots to "grab" reed is going to be a hell of a lot harder than everyone seems to make it. almost EVERYONE wants to move back. jeez...sometimes I just wish the draft was overwith already so this craziness could end
i think the ONLY positions id flip out were CB (Jimmy Smith) and OT (anybody) in round 1. Slauson has filled in nicely at LG and its time for Ducasse to really get his feet wet. not to mention too much has been invested at CB at this point Cro or no Cro. if we lose Cro and they dont have the faith to slide Wilson up into the 2 spot that would be an indictment on Wilson. at this stage I'm hoping Ayers is there, not the greatest pass rusher but a great football mind, a big guy who can play in space without a doubt. people bitch about TE's giving us fits, that probably ends with Ayers in the mix. probably a better fit at ILB for the 3-4 but has the versatility for Rex to plug him in where he deems necessarry. Cam Heyward, I think its a pipe dream cuz any real GM and scout staff with tape will grade this guy 15-25. I think hes probably a Charger unless they get one of the top 15 OLB's to fall on their laps. I do have a feeling someone will fall to us whether it be through QB trade up's ahead of us or theres always at least 2 or 3 teams who have a glaring need somewhere and suprise everyone with adressing what mightve been percieved as a lesser need for greater talent. lets just hope one of the upper tier OLB's falls. although i dont see it
one of the guys I mentioned will drop....some retarded team will overvalue a player in the top 15 (ie Tyson Alualu), which will cause a domino effect. what a disgusting thing to say.
Jerry Hughes. EDIT: seriously....I also mentioned JJ Watt and Cam Jordan. And I never said they "will"...i said there's a chance. The draft is unpredictable. I didn't think Wilson would drop all the way to us last year....I also didn't think Alaulu would be a top 10 pick. Shit happens in the first round, it's not as clear cut as everyone thinks.
I also wouldn't rule out a Tanny trade up to jump the Patriots. I don't approve of it (unless it's a helluva deal we're making)....but it certainly could happen. Especially if a player like Watt, Jordan or Liuget is there.
That depends on the type of 34 end. Its its an Arron Smith clone, no, but if the guy has Seymour like potential to both be a anchor against the run and a threat to get tot the QB, then yes. Those guys are rare and very valuable. We have a enough guys who are very good against the run who provide little to nothing on passing downs. We need another Ellis. This year I would not trade up because we should have several good prospects available to us at 30.
