I think you have to look at Bowers if he falls to # 30. Like you said, the Jets don't play solely a 3-4 defense, they play almost as much 4-3. Bowers has some concerns about his first step coming off the edge which is further magnified by his knee issue. I'm curious of what others think about him possibly being an undersized 5 technique. Although he's only 6-3, he does appear to have a frame that's able to put on muscle.Additionally, he has very long arms and big hands which can be crucial in a 2 gap scheme. I think if he can learn proper technique and his knee holds up,with his athleticism he could project as a Richard Seymour type player. This would all depend on what rex thinks and what the jets Medical staff thinks..but I think it's certainly worth consideration
jesus christ, another Gholston comment. There should be a one day ban for anyone using his name in their post. He is quite possibly the biggest non QB, not injury related bust in the history of the league. Rex didn't get anything out of him, you are right. Does that mean Rex is no longer a good coach? Does that mean that we can't draft a guy with the talent Bowers has if we were so lucky to have him fall to 30? The VG arguments are so over used, and they don't even support the argument.
the point i was making, that obviously flew over your head, is despite Rex being a defensive genius...he can't fit every square peg into a round hole. Not saying he couldn't do that with Bowers, but he didn't with Gholston....so don't assume that whatever player Rex touches turns to defensive gold.
Gholston wasn't a square peg in a round hole though- he just sucked. He was tried at 3-4 OLB, 4-3 End, 3-4 end. Nothing worked. He had perfect physical attributes to be a successful OLB, or 4-3 end, and he just didn't work out. Almost every 3-4 OLB in the NFL has had to transition positions at one point or another.
yes...Gholston was a square peg in a round hole...that wasn't developed properly by Mangini...and subsequently couldn't be resurrected by Rex/Pettine. The point again is.....Rex had a chance to remold Vernon into something serviceable and could not. Not saying Bowers is Gholston....just advocating that you shouldn't just automatically assume that Rex will make something out of every player on his roster. Gholston is an EXCELLENT example of that.
Da'Quan could play in the 3-4, but it would almost be a waste to put such a good pass rusher in that role.
I'd be curious to know your opinion about Bowers as a 5 technique? I realize on the surface his skills translate better in the 4-3 and his background is in a 4-3, but I think some of his skills make him a unique prospect for an undersized 34 end. He's already 280 lbs, has the frame to add more weight, has long arms and big hands. The concerns with his first step would not be as exasperated in the 34 and I think his athleticism would make him a consistent threat to get penetration on any given down. Your thoughts?
Things just clicked for Bowers this year - I think he's equally as good against the run as he is against the pass. It would definitely take him some time to pick up a new role in a defense, but he's got the size and athleticism to play in any scheme.
If you belive the knee is fine. Its going to be an issue his entire career and reports have him possibly needing micro fracture surgery and limiting his pratice time and snaps. I would not touch the kid at 30 unless my docotrs were positive it would be ok. Even then I would be leary.
the coaching staff seemed pretty high on cumberland to develop. and with so many holes I wouldnt really like the pick. this pick IMO HAS to be a front 7 player unless a complete gem falls on our laps. which i dont see happening unless all the QB trade ups happen before 30 rolls around
This. I would absolutely hate the Rudolph pick. That would make 2 first round TE picks on the roster, and Keller is underutilized as it is. I'd much prefer an OT here instead of a TE, but the need is front 7.
if daquan bowers was available, it would be a hell of a steal...I think he can play end, he is 280 and has a frame to put on weight ( i think mike mayock said his lower body could get stronger)
bowers could play in either but hes an absolute monster qb nightmare as a 4-3 end. if your talking about him beefing up you have to be weary of how much weight he puts on that knee of his. cause if he does fall to us I love our team but id trust 29 other medical staff's over our 1. that being said ive seen plenty of his career and someone is getting a hell of a steal come draft day because if your playing a game for 1 day hes easily one of the best players in this draft. the rest is up for medical teams to figure out
Rudolph would be an insteresting pick to me. It could signal a few things. We may not like where Kellers early contract demands are looking. We want to employ more 2 te / single back sets. Rudolph and Keller, with Edwards and Holmes on the outside and green in the back feild is a scary set for anyone to plan against. That or perhaps we think Holmes is gone and want to add another pass catching threat to go with Keller, Edwards, and Cotchery. While I want front 7 help, I would not be completely against adding a stud prospect like him if the staff likes the value at 30.
Remember, there was a lot of smoke around the draft 2 years ago the Jets would draft Pettigrew or Harvin if they kept their pick. My only issue with taking a tight end now is that the Jets apparently had to have 4 tight ends on their roster last year, and still play Turner a lot at TE. Drafting a TE would mean cleaning house at TE basically and dumping either Mulligan or Cumberland. Then again, the Jets did this at QB with O'Connell, Ainge, and Clemens all backing up Sanchez. Then they cleaned house with K O'C and Ainge (on his own volition) to bring in Brunell. And MB, Gholston is a lost cause. Maybe in a 4-3 he could do something, and he was a little better last year. But what has he shown at the pro level that says he can be a player? Rex has been coaching everyone up, Gholston just sucks. He has nothing to do with Bowers at all.
