In contrast to my other thread about the Jets moving up…there are some potential BPA options that could be staring us in the face that aren’t pressing needs, but fit the scheme and present value. These are players we should take a close look at and realize although remote, they are in fact possibilities, if the board falls a specific way. Jimmy Smith, CB Colorado- This selection would cause quite the uproar in Jet nation. For one, the secondary is considered a team strength with Kyle Wilson just selected in round 1 last year and poised for a bigger role this coming season. Just realize that not only would Smith present great value at # 30, but his in your face physical man-up style fits Rex’s scheme perfectly and Rex loves drafting DB’S. The jets secondary did struggle defending the middle of the field and seemed to lack talent/experience at the nickel and dime back. This would give the Jets another high end prospect to play with and would also give Tannenbaum leverage/back-up plan for the whole Cromartie situation. If Tannenbaum can somehow make the cap numbers work Revis/Cromartie/Wilson/Smith/Coleman looks downright dominant to me. Kyle Rudolph, TE Notre Dame- Visions of Kyle Brady,Johnnie Mitchell and Anthony Becht would of course resurface…although hopefully Keller’s success will erase some of those bad memories. Obviously Tight end is not a pressing need as Keller is top 10 at his position while Mulligan is a great blocking TE and Cunningham has upside as a receiver. But Rudolph could end up being the best available at #30, and with the way teams like New England stockpile good TE’s, it wouldn’t be such a bad thing to have another blue chip prospect to pair with Keller. Obviously Keller has done a lot of great things and has a bright future. But he’s more of an H-back/vertical threat TE than he is a classic northeast Block and show up in the red zone type. That isn’t to say he hasn’t had success in the red zone, but I think the team could use a bigger more physical target in those goal to go situations. If Rudolph is healthy he can be a top 10 caliber Tight end. He’s not quite the vertical threat or athlete Keller is..but he has great hands, is a big target and stretches the field. He’s also probably a better blocker than Keller is. Keller and Rudolph in a twin TE set would be frightening for opposing defenses. You then let Cunningham and Mulligan duke it out for the # 3 spot. Randall Cobb, WR Kentucky- 2 months ago Cobb was likely a 3rd round pick at best, but I think he’s moving up a lot of draft boards because he can help a team in so many different ways. Cobb would provide us w/ a versatile YAC guy who could also contribute on special teams and wildcat formations. The Jets have strong interest in him, and although it might catch some people as a surprise, but if the board falls a certain way, I would not be shocked to see them pull the trigger on him. With the way he’s moving up draft boards, and the number of ways he can help a team…I’m not so sure he’s a reach at this spot. Oh by the way..once again this would give Tanny negotiating leverage with a pending free agent, Brad Smith.
Randall Cobb? No way he's the best available player at 30. Why would Tannenbaum draft a slot receiver in the first round to get leverage over a kick returner? The Jets would pass on Jimmy Smith because of the money we already have invested into the position. If Cromartie re-signs, then this should definitely be thrown out. You don't pay dime corners millions of dollars. Kyle Rudolph would be an interesting pick - the Patriots proved that having two capable tight ends is dangerous.
I would not be crazy about Cobb or Rudolph in round one at all. Jimmy Smith is however definitely 100% in play and in the discussion for us at 30. Rex needs atleast 3 good to great cover corners for his defense to truly click. Imo I'm not so sure Cro is gonna be resigned, with the jets locking up braylon and Holmes instead. That puts us in a position where CB is of a pretty big need and rather than spend on a free agent i could defintly see them drafting Smith who some consider the best press cover man in the draft. I would personally only be a fan of it if the top tier of DE'S and OLB's are gone, or if we can't trade down a bit to take Ballard or reed. Yes, i would definitely consider taking Smith over reed. I'll throw out a name here not saying id like it but lets see some opinions. If guys like heyward, ayers wilk, etc are gone and we couldn't trade down would anyone consider Ingram? Just something to discuss...
If Mark Ingram falls to 30, he should be the pick. It's a damn shame that he's actually underrated right now. Instant upgrade over Tomlinson and Greene.
Top Five Surprise BPAs: 1. Aaron Williams, DB, Texas 2. Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State 3. Gabe Carimi, OL, Wisconsin 4. Mikel LeShoure, RB, Illinois 5. Derek Sherrod, OL, Mississippi State
Doesn't Imgram have signs of arthritis in his knee/knees? Is it so mild he's still considered a first-rounder?
Ingram should go in the top twenty. In an evolving league, Ingram will be fine if he's paired with another back in a committee. In my opinion, Ingram will be a star in the NFL because of his vision. He won't break off too many huge runs, but he's just one of those guys that gets the job done.
I agree he would definitely have to be highly considered. Some might or might know my dislike of taking Ingram as high as 15, but at 30 he'd be a hell of a value. A 1 2 punch of Ingram and Greene, with McKnight as the #3 for the foreseeable future would be beastly.
With so many talented DE's coming out this year I have a feeling someone like: Quinn, Bowers, Aldon Smith, or JJ Watt falls far in the first round. A lot of the teams picking from 10 to 25 are in need of OL, which is good because there are a lot of solid tackles to be taken in the first this year. Hoping a few teams reach on some QBs and WRs as well. I just can't see the only playmakers taken in the first being: Ingram, Julio, and AJ. Some of the tweeners at RB and WR that are projected in the 2nd will go in the first, probably to teams like Baltimore, New England, Kansas City, and Chicago.
More than 2 QBs will be taken in the 1st round. That will drop someone to us. I still don't know who is going to fall, because I really think the top front 7 players will be gone.
It's overblown IMO, partly because teams want him to slide to late 1st. If he's there, I wouldn't be shocked if he's the pick, on paper it would take the rushing attack to another level. With Rex's BPA preference, it could happen...
Both of the potential 1st round Rb's in Ingram and Leshoure are interesting possibilities. Obviously this would conclude Lt's career with the Jets. The prospect does present alot of value and would provide the team with a long term primary back. Leshoure fits the "ground and pound" philosophy better than Ingram, and alot of NFL personnel guys seem to prefer him over Ingram. I'm not as high on him as others are. He is not quick or fast, will struggle to get the edge and plays very high. But he is a very physical inside runner who can likely handle 20+ carries a game. Ingram has the Emmit Smith/Curtis Martin make-up. He's extremely quick to the hole, can carry the load and is a winner. I would like to see a few more big plays out of him..but w/ both Greene and Mcknight getting 5-10 meaningful carries between them...it could make sense.
I brought up Smith about 2 months ago-- it's worth debate, but with the other talent available at DE and OLB, I doubt we take him. Rudolph would be a complete waste IMO. I love the idea of 2 TE sets, but not when you have 3 very good WR's. Keller is a great TE, but he's under utilized-- not enough balls to go around. If we got another receiving TE, we would just get diminishing returns. Cobb - see above. I don't like the idea of a WR picked before round 4 this year. If we're going to draft a WR, I'd like a late round slot guy. I always make a list of guys who are not necesarily top needs, but would be good value. Last year it was guys like Brian Bulaga, Anthony Davis, CJ Spiller, and Derrick Morgan. This year, it's Carimi, Castonzo and MAYBE Ingram.
Good post. I always think about what we need to happen in order to have more players of need slide our way. You are right-- we need QB's and Tackles to go on a run. Every time an offensive player is picked, I'm going to cheer.
True, sorry I was just thinking of players that could be there when we pick that you wouldn't normally expect to be there. He would be the BPA, just not the BPA that fits a need.
Why would you apologize for that? If Bowers was available at 30, he would be an absolute steal. We have the best Defensive coach in the league- you don't think rex would be able to use this guy? He's a few lbs heavier than Pace, and a few lbs lighter than Ellis. He could go either way, and would probably be used similar to the way we used Jason Taylor last year. We run a 4-3 about half the time anyway- the "OLB" is just standing in the same position a 4-3 DE would be. This guy can play ball in any system. You can't pass on a big time prospect because you don't think he's a perfect fit- Bowers value would be too great.
