Two, it would keep Moss from returning to the Patriots, whom he is known to want to re-join. The part about keeping Moss away from New England makes the most sense. I don't know if any other team in the league could be confident that they were going to get even 70 percent of Moss' best effort. The Vikings and Titans certainly didn't. In a rivalry as close and as heated as the one between the Jets and Pats, it makes sense. I don't think Moss makes the Jets any better -- their offense is miles behind New England's, Mark Sanchez(notes) has neither a rapport with Moss nor half of Tom Brady's(notes) ability, and it seems like, at best, a crapshoot on whether or not Moss would show up and play hard. But if it keeps a weapon away from the Patriots, it's probably worth doing.
Buying Moss to keep the Pats from having him is a bit ridiculous considering our ability to shut him down the last couple of years. Driving the price up on him is one thing, but I don't see the Pats in any kind of mad rush to resign him at all costs.. they are going to want him cheap, if at all. The only thing I hate worse than a slow offseason, is a striking offseason.
The only reason to sign Moss would be with the hope that he would have one last great game against the Patriots. But other then that, this guy seems very done. He's been begging for the Patriots to take him back and they just don't seem interested. So...
Since this is a copycat league the Pats do need a down-field threat. The Jets showed everyone how to stop the All-Mighty TB. Prior to that game the Pats had a field day with the Moss-less offense. (for the most part)
Was thinking the same thing. The Jets more or less shut Moss down completely in 2009 and in week two last year. But then I started thinking, if there is any truth to it, maybe it's to keep the Patriots from dick-slapping other teams with Brady-to-Moss. It's not a problem for you guys, but you have a top defense. And anytime you can keep a divisional opponent from getting extra wins, you do it. So maybe it would be more along those lines, rather than in the head-to-head matchup sense.
True, but most teams don't have your personnel or coaching staff. Hell, Revis alone makes the Jets' defense very unique in terms of what they can do on the field.

Yeah, but it just doesn't have the same feel, especially for Jet fans. This is when Tanny really shines, pulling in FAs and trades. I could've seen us trying to trade up but now everyone is pretty much locked into their positions. Right??
I don't disagree with the idea that a deep threat would benefit the Patriots. I'm just not sure it's Moss anymore. It's clear Moss REALLY wants to come back to the Patriots. I bet they could even get him cheap. Maybe the Pats will want him but I'm not at all sure about that.
Tis true.. good point man. He's not value-less in that aspect. But, the Pats are still pretty shrewd when it comes to price of talent. I don't see them overspending even for a known quantity. But you never know with these things sometimes.
If Randy bought into the Patriots new offensive philosophy..they could be dangerous as fuck. What I'm saying is, Moss not expecting the ball the entire game, but having his few shots down field to get defenses all whacked out. ..but I think he is a little shot.
I'd say so. Players on teams' rosters aren't trade-able commodities like they usually are. I'm hoping (but not expecting) that the Patriots will take advantage of those stockpiled picks and will move up the board somehow. There's only a handful of teams that will be in that position, so if there was ever a year to trade extra picks for position, it seems like this one's it. That said, BB will undoubtedly parlay his two first-rounders into five 6th rounders in 2012 and two seconds in 2014. Moss may have been truly humbled by what happened last year... who knows. If he's interested in being a Patriot and not so much in his financial situation, it could work out. I think he truly regretted being such a jackass in his last weeks here, and he may have torched the bridge anyway. True on all counts. Even if he has lost some speed and talent, he still has to be accounted for. At the very least he can "take the top off the defense," to use his own words.
Personally I would rather have TO than Moss if we had to sign a vet for a year to help fill the potential loss of one of the two FA WRs. Atleast TO will go over the middle and can move the chains. Obviously I would rather keep Holmes and Edwards than sign either of the two above, but that may not be realistic. Hopefully Tannenbaum finds a way though to keep them both.
