Will preface by saying not who I want anyone to pick, but who I think they will pick. Enjoy and leave any comments you see fit! But I think they like him and since i'm not doing trade downs I think they'd take him over anyone else left on the board at this point (even though I'd probably take Paea). Doomsday scenario for the Jets faitful with just about every target coming off the board between 17 and 30.) Pittsburgh (12-4)- T/G Ben Ijalana Villanova Green Bay (10-6)- DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard Pittsburgh Lemme know what you guys think. Would be a terrible situation for the Jets if that's the way the draft fell but I feel pretty good with the way this turned out. Ingram falls out of the 1st because of the growing concern about his arthritic knee. I would expect the Pats to snatch him up at the top of round 2 though.
So if this was the way the board fell, i would probably just try and erase this entire draft from my mind...this = the worst possible scenario for the Jets
I'm not a Taylor hater, so I wouldn't hate it if things fell this way, although, that would take Kenric Ellis out of the picture. The good thing I see immediately is that instead of getting JJ Watt or Cameron Jorday, NE gets Muhammad Wilkerson, and also Akeem Ayers, who I think will not be that good or effective in the NFL.
Phil Taylor is one of the few that I would seriously question the pick. I trust in the FO, like I've said numerous times before, but that would be a huge head scratcher.
Why? He has size and athleticism that can't be coached. With better conditioning, technique and coaching, Taylor could become the best NT in the game. He could be everything that Kris Jenkins or Vince Woolfork is. I'm not saying he will be, but think he has that kind of potential. If he was already that kind of player, the Jets wouldn't even get a chance to get a whiff of him. What would be a head scratcher for me is why Rex would take Ayers, a guy who doesn't have the speed or explosiveness to excell as a pass rusher.
you are focusing way to much on measurables. Taylor may have the measurables, but he doesnt have the drive imo. He takes way to many plays off. And too me he appears to be nothing more than a future NT as part of a rotation that can dominate at times, but more often then not will lose the battles up front. That is not what I want in my 1rst round picks. Taylor has potential sure, but if there was even 1 legit NT prospect in this draft, taylor would be a late 2nd round prospect. Taylor is being shoved up boards because teams need that NT and there really isnt a great prospect so they take the best available and he flies up boards. Think Tyson Jackson a couple years ago going 3rd overall. Add in the fact, we actually have a damn good NT in Pouha, it makes no sense to draft a guy like Taylor that early. agreed, he seems to mail it in at times. Doesn't seem like a Rex ryan type guy, the guy who gives it everything he has every snap...
I'm sure that if the Jets took him, Rex would have addressed that point with him and been satisfied with Taylor's response. Taking plays off is something that can be remedied with a swift kick in the arse. Lacking the physical tools to succeed in the NFL as a pass rusher (Ayers) isn't.
Agreed with all of you. This kind of draft is fairly possible unfortunately and wanted to see what everyone thought was the best way to go with no trade down. Taylor, sheard, paea, tez Wilson, other? Personally id prob go paea in this situation.
Overall a good effort. Not much pickings left for the Jets. In another thread I stated yesterday, IMO, a couple second tier QBs are going to be drafted in the mid 20s when teams trade up. This will help the Jets have a better player that will fall. I'm not a Rd 1 Phil Taylor fan and I believe Paea is better in a 4-3 front. I'm a Brooks Reed fan and I believe we at TGG may be overvaluing him a little. I expect him to be available at 28 or 30.
First off, I think I've been fairly clear that Taylor isn't even my second or third choice at #30. Second, I don't dispute what you say about Taylor taking plays off. I'm just saying that if the Jets took him at #30, Rex would have made sure that there was a reason why Taylor had done that in the past, and it would be in the past. Rex would make sure of that, or he wouldn't take him.
Taylor is overvalued just because the scarcity of the position, he is no where near an elite talent at NG IMO. Unless there is a NG prospect that is leaps and bounds better than the rest, I'm not spending a 1st on him...
The problem with this line of thought is that there will not be an elite prospect available at #30 in any draft. I for one would not be upset if the draft played out like this at all. I think Ayers has bust written all over him and am excited to see Belichick selecting him. Not sure Miami would take a center when they need a QB so badly.
That's why you don't reach to get one at #30 just because it's a scarce position, you trade back. If he's not worth it, he's not worth it...
I think Phil Taylor will be a solid nose tackle in the league, but I agree with others that say he's not worth a first rounder. If we were able to trade out of the first, I'd definitely be excited if we landed a player like Phil Taylor in the second round. I just don't think he's valuable enough to use a first rounder on.
