..... Now thats a silly statement. Its hard to say we are backed up against a currently non exisiting cap that would have its number changed in any incomming deal. Better yet, if the judge forces last years rules on us, there would be no cap again. Your just specualting "facts" here.
I didn't like the approach they took to the WRs after the season ended. It shows that the business is still more important than the wins. We need guys Sanchez if comfortable with and who can make big plays...those guys are both and we're risking losing them.
The only approach we could have taken was with Edwards. He could have been extended right up to the end of the league year, and I was on record as hoping he would be. Holmes, due to his low 2010 salary, was excluded via the 30% rule from any sort of meaningful negotiation. We had no way of offering him a fair contract after the season ended. As far as the business being more important than the wins, the two are tied together this offseason. The Jets have to decide how best to spread the money around, and they can't very well make final decisions in that regard until they know what the cap situation looks like for 2011. It's an absurd statement. It's unfortunate that the team allowed the uncertainty of the labor situation to dictate its approach to Edwards, but it's not like there was a cut and dry superior option given how severe that uncertainty was and continues to be. What "approach" were you pushing for?
The approach would have been to make representations of a serious interest in re-signing both receivers. Tannenbaum hasn't gone there and has instead gone with the typical approach of what I call "diplomatic indifference". Players see through that shit, and that's why Holmes is making these comments.

He says he wants to keep the trio together and you criticize him for not being interested in signing both receivers? Huh? He can't come out and say "We're going to get it done no matter what" with an uncertain CBA. You're fishing for something to gripe about.
Interestingly, here's what Holmes had to say two and a half months ago: Because so much has changed since January...
Good interchange, fellas. Very interesting indeed. Let's hope both WRs are also still interested, but waiting in the wings.
Stupid statement of the offseason award goes to...... Jtuds! Really, we spend damn near the cap every season. So not knowing what the cap will be, they choose not to throw tons of maney at two receivers. This is a good thing, becasue it leaves us the ability to fix several holes or resign other players instead of tying up nearly 20 mill iin those two. It was about the uncertainty of the CBA, not bussiness over wins.
Talent wise, I think Holmes is a better receiver. That does not mean I want him over Edwards at all costs though. Braylon is doing himself very good by lying low and keeping his trap shut through the offseason. If his demands come in at less than holmes and the guy stays out fo trouble and the media in this way then I'm all for him being priority number 1.
I hear what your sayin, but I'm not totally convinced it is true. If you give Edwards those same opportunities, I'm not so sure he doesn't come up just as big. I think Holmes is a better, more deceptive, route runner, but Edwards is a big, physical receiver who gets the job done with those attributes. Edwards is a better downfield blocker, and at least appears to be more of a team guy than Santonio. I still think we try to keep them both, but if I have to choose between the two I'll take Edwards all day long. We'd have a number of FA possibilities to compliment BE on the other side. Holmes is a ticking time bomb in my opinion.
You're right that he's doing what he should, but he's not keeping his mouth shut. He's saying that he wants to be a Jet, but that he won't play for peanuts. He wants the contract that he's worth. He knows 100% what his FA status will be, so he's in a position to address it, and he's not closing anything off. Holmes should be taking notes.
If it were up to Ryan, and if money weren't an issue, I think it's clear that the Jets would keep Santonio over Braylon. But neither of those is the case. For years before Edwards, Holmes or Ryan were here, Tannenbaum and the Jets struggled to find a big wideout. That was always the missing ingredient. We had little guys like Santana Moss and LC, guys who could stretch the field and create in space. We didn't have the big target that makes life easy for quarterbacks. We tried (see Justin McCareins) but nobody came through until Edwards came to town. Edwards should be much easier to sign for a variety of reasons (already cashed in on a big rookie deal, prefers New York to other places, Holmes had a rougher upbringing). And don't forget that the Jets gave up more to trade for Edwards than for Holmes; theoretically it shouldn't matter after the fact, but at some point Tannenbaum's gonna be thinking about it. Taking all of the above along with their play on the field (Edwards has every appearance of being ready to put up star numbers as soon as Sanchez is, Holmes never appeared to me to be completely integrated in the offense) and I'm not even sure why this is close. Holmes might, MIGHT be a little more talented, but I'm not even sure about that, Edwards' height more than makes up for the speed difference. Once you remember that there are other positions on the team, and that cap dollars could be used to keep guys like Cromartie or Harris on the team, I think you've gotta go with Braylon. Edwards, Cotchery and Randy Moss sharing starting duties is what I'm hoping for.
Yeah, Edwards and Moss would be a bizarre pairing. If Edwards is the guy, I want a relatively inexpensive slot receiver coming in like Danny Amendola. Cotchery will be fine now that the back issues are healing up. I'd only consider Moss if Holmes were the guy we kept.
I'm not fishing, I just don't like the vagueness and clearly the players don't either. In my eyes it's all bullshit until there's a contract. We have enough examples from history in this business to recognize that.
That's what I was thinking. A guy like Amendola or even Chansi Stuckey would be a viable slot WR if Edwards is kept and Holmes is not.
So, just to trace your argument. So, first you don't like the approach being taken, which you state as a lack of serious interest in re-signing both players. When I give you direct quotes that demonstrate Tannenbaum's explicit interest in retaining both players, suddenly your real problem is the 'vagueness'. What vagueness? How much more explicit does he need to be to satisfy you? He wants both players, but he has no clue what's going to be possible with the labor situation. That's as honest as it gets right now. He can't come out and say that he's going to absolutely bring them both back, only to have a deal suddenly reached with a low initial cap. Any 'vagueness' is the product of that uncertain labor situation. You blame the team for the collective fuck up of the entire NFL. And if the players didn't like their 'vague' situation, they should have offered a counter to the proposal the owners offered instead of opting all the way to drag this out in court. And of course there's my favorite NEW argument: "It's all bullshit until there's a contract". Bravo. Now you're criticizing the team for failing to offer something that it can't offer during the lockout. "The New York Jets haven't performed a miracle, and it's unacceptable." Great. If that's the angle you want to now adopt, good luck. Unfortunately, everyone else can "see through that shit". You were wrong, and rather than admit it you'd like to look like a buffoon. You've offered nothing of substance here. Just hollow phrasings to mask the fact that you have no idea what you're talking about. So for the edification of all, the brief summary of Jtuds' feelings on the offseason, in his own words: Damn those Jets for failing to do what they're prohibited from doing.
The latest holmes quotes are starting to piss me off. Fuck him. If all offers were equal he wouldn't be a jet? What an idiot. Please get high and forget to cheat the drug test again so we can sign you for pennies on the dollar for 2012 and bring in a stopgap wideout for 2011.
I think if all offers were equal, he WOULD be a Jet. I just don't think we're going to be prepared to offer what another team would if he were unrestricted. Still, if 2010 rules apply and he's an RFA, he has no choice but to work with Tanny one way or another, or he can sit out the season.
