I'm not going to go too far into defending one of my least favorite Jet mocks that I've made but: 1. Mike Nugent has absolutely nothing to do with anything. I'm sure the Packers have no regrets over Crosby, or the Pats with Gostowski, or even the Raiders years ago with Janakowski. I think Henery is that caliber of kicking prospect, and Folk didn't do much to create any loyalty between he and I last year. Henery is the best kicking prospect to coming out since Crosby/Gostowski. 2. Moore's on the rise according to DraftScout, which is what that is. Either way, I just felt like going weird with these mocks (never mocked the Jets Culliver or Moore, and only recently came around on Ayers). Personally, I feel he's less of an idiot than Clowney and a more versatile player. I'd also go as far as saying that Moore is more athletic and possibly even faster... One of my ideal Jets drafts: 1: Cameron Heyward DE/DT (OSU) 3: Kenrick Ellis DL (Hampton) 4: Deunta Williams FS (NCU) 5: Dwayne Harris WR (ECU) 6: Cliff Matthews DE/OLB (USC) 7: Alex Henery K/KOS (Nebraska)
Kickers can be signed as undrafted Free Agents....I'd rather see the Jets use their picks on other position prospects. The Mike Nugent debacle was too much for any Jet fan to handle.
Any position can be filled with UDFAs...and K is a position spot...and we weren't so locked down last year that Folk is untouchable. Also, again I don't see how Mike Nugent plays into this situation at all. Not only is this a SIXTH round pick in the mock rather than a 2nd, but staying away from a position because a decade ago an early pick went bust at it isn't very rational. It's as irrational as my possible rationale that Nebraska is putting out very strong defensive players into the league, and where there is defense there is special teams...and Henery was their best ST player.
I guess the point I was trying to make is that the Kicker position isn't very high in the pecking order when it comes to the draft....kickers can be had during the UDFA period. I'm not saying kickers shouldn't be drafted....but the Jets current kicking situation doesn't require the Jets FO to burn a pick on a kicker. Outside of kickoffs, Folk was pretty decent this season. just my .02.
Couple things: 1. Kicker is a big deal. They kick the ball and therefore play a large part in the FG game and the field position game. 2. The fact that Folk sucks at kickoffs really hurts. This D is good, but put any D in bad field position and they won't look as good. 3. If Henery actually were on the board with one of the last 3 picks of the 6th round, it's arguable that he's pretty damn close to BPA. He's probably the best kicker AND kickoff specialist in this class. 4. I don't think Folk did anything that would really secure him the job in the future. 5. Crosby went in the 3rd...Gostkowski was a 4th...top kicker prospects do get drafted fairly high, and outside of Nugent the touted guys have done fine.
Id rather sign a kicker like Phil Dawson then risk a 4th 5th or 6th on a kicker when we could potentially have some solid rotational guys and future starters in those rounds.
Henery would be a possible future starter. Just as possible as any other 6th rounder....probably moreso since he's better than you average 6th round pick. Dawson was franchised, and has been kicking in Cleveland for over a decade...there's a relationship there. I'd love to sign Phil Dawson too. It won't happen.
I'm not wrong, you just disagree. What "need" did that mock really ignore? The only thing I regret is not grabbing Powe in the fray. He's a possibility in the 5-6 range possibly.
Drafting a kickoff specialist is pure genius. It worked out well for Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys. Also, according to this thread a few days ago Phil Taylor was better than Cameron Jordan.
YES!!! You're BACK!! 1. Jordan not being in the mock was clearly a mistake. 2. Drafting a kicker has worked out for alot of teams. 10 years ago it didn't work out for the Jets. Therefore, it will never happen nor work out again. Your logic, as usual, is infallible.
He's ultimately going to be his best as a 34 ILB. He's a skilled LB, without any special traits as a passrusher. Sure he can play and probably start at OLB as a rookie, but the passrush won't be any better than last year. BT and Pace aren't bad players, they're just very far from being gamechanging passrushers. The whole point of going with an OLB early is to try and find a guy who can compliment them and make an instant impact. It's one of the reasons I could really care less about converting a DE, because they have able starters at both spots. Ayers can play, but for the next year or two he'll just be a more skilled, less experienced version of what we have in BT. He won't hit his best stride until Scott leaves and he replaces him inside. Getting an additional 34 OLB would allow them to at least groom someone as a spot rusher and eventually (hopefully) take over a more significant role in the D.
I never went anywhere. Phil Taylor getting selected #12 overall was clearly retarded. The Jets don't need a kicker. Nick Folk is so under appreciated that it's almost a joke. The guy got the job done when we needed it most. Is he replaceable? Yes, but we have much bigger needs then a fucking kicker. ...but, but, but he sucks at kicking off. Like some other posters said before, that doesn't matter anymore with the rule change. If he can make kicks in the clutch, he's got a place on this team. My logic, as usual, is fucking amazing.
Yes!! You're back!! Using...what? Hindsight? The draft hasn't happened yet. You logic, as usual, is amazing when held to the standards of apes! Not so sure what is to be unappreciated about a 77% (rounding up) field goal kicker, but I'm sure Folk has heart or spirit or a special ability to hit clutch kicks. Again I ask, what was the need in the draft that my Jet mock ignored? How specific are these needs? I mean, who doesn't need the dominant pass rusher? The Cowboys have Ware, the Vikings have Allen, the Chiefs have the Great Hali, the Steelers have their LBs, and their fans will STILL tell you that the pass rush is a problem. The Giants have 7-8 starting caliber DEs and DTs and their fans will tell you about pass rush problems. Besides Henery I attacked the front 7 by adding a top LB prospect a 340 pound DL prospect who actually can play. Then grabbed a cover safety who also played CB at times, grabbed a guy who can battle Cumberland for the backup TE job and replace Hartstock, and grabbed a WR/possibly KR for some depth. Which one of the Jets' big gaping needs was not covered? An OL? I'll throw one in my next mock.
Thank you!! To the OP: No way we draft him, right now he is projected to be around the 20-25th slots. You think were going to make that much of a reach (considering we just did that 2 years ago wth Aaron Maybust?) when Tackle really isn't that muh of a need. Bell played really well last year and I think he'll be the permanent LT. In the later rounds yes we need a RT. But we were 32nd against the run last year. If Dareus falls to us (which he won't) he's the automatic pick. Gailey and Nix are really high on 4 year starters which leads me to believe the pick could be Von Miller which im not against. We damn sure need a pass rusher!! If we reach for a player I rather it be Robert Quinn. Chances are the pick will be Von Miller but i prefer Cam Newton in the first and Rudolph in the 2nd and defense with the rest of the picks. By the way our QB is Fitzpatrick not "Fitzgerald" lol. I know he's not as well known as Matt Sanchez.
