It's going to suck having the Patriots constantly picking ahead of the Jets and it's going to suck not having a 2nd round pick. My plan all along was to go Brooks Reed in the first and pair him with another guy later on. Didn't happen as Reed went to New England. At first I was second guessing myself with Ayers, who is a player I like but don't love. But look at the list of pass rushers that went between the Jets 1st and 3rd round picks: Jabaal Sheard Martez Wilson Sam Acho Bruce Carter Chris Carter Had I waited to get an OLB, I don't think the value would've been there in the 3rd round. Ayers would be a nice versatile player for Rex and while I think his best fit ultimately is on the inside of a 3-4, he'd contribute right away. I liked getting Williams in the 3rd. I think he would immediately come in and contribute, if not start. He's a true ballhawk that if it wasn't for the injuries and suspension would've been taken a lot higher. Thornton is a developmental pick but I'm a big believer in getting Rex the most talent and he'll make something of the player (Gholston not withstanding). I thought about going Steven Friday but thought while 3-4 OLB was important, I'm not sure it'd have been worth 2 of the first 3 picks. I loved getting Andrew Jackson in the 5th. I think within a year or two he'd be starting. Had some ankle sprain issues which pushed him down a bit but the talent is definitely there. I wanted Chinasa in the 6th, but in true form, he went to the Pats the pick before. Cliff Matthews has a lot of talent for a late 6th rounder and you could almost see him having more of an immediate impact as a pass rusher then Ayers. I also was planning on taking McElroy in the 7th but he went the pick before. Ronald Johnson is a slot type receiver who also is a really good kick returner, for whatever that's worth now. Even if Brad Smith is back, you could do worse then having Johnson as your 5th WR. So all in all, I was excited to be the Jets GM but it's definitely something that should get spread around each year. Thanks to WW for giving them to me for this draft and hopefully if I was GM and this was the draft we had we wouldn't have any Fire TCGF signatures here.
Hell, there wouldn't be any value late 2nd, some may have to reach even to get a good passrusher. I like the draft, good job!
Good job man. I had it last year and posted a recap of all the jet gms before me. We pretty much all sucked. I took Ricky Sapp for shit's sake (though that's mostly an injury's fault).
Well despite the Pats staying in front of you, the good news is that the Pats always like to trade down to get more picks. Might have went after Heyward over Ayers but I understand the concern of Heyward because of his health record and because he doesn't necessarily explode off the D-Line. I like the Williams pick in the 3rd and I think he athletically could be the best safety on the team. Johnson in the 7th is a steal as he should be a 5th rounder most likely.
You did an awesome job made. Thornton could be the next Ellis with some developing under Rex and this staff. He's my second favorite player in your draft. His combination of strength and athleticism will really help bring pressure to the QB and force RB to the outside. I no you were disappointed in settling for him but he's great. Ayers is just plain crazy, can play all over the field and has great coverage skills. He'll help us against TEs on short routes and will also make a great TFL guy and hell he can get to the QB when needed. He'll make the defense even better, and that's just scary. Deunta is also great for this team, he needs to get healthier but he has some crazy skill set going for him, not sure if he'll get to the End of the third but if so he'd be of great value for us. Overall you had a really superb draft and I'd be happy to have this sort of outcome.
