Im going to say its more so scheme. He didnt do that much pass rushing, but when he did he was pretty good and with the help of Rex he should become really good.
I live in NC, and am a HUGE UNC fan. I've watched all of these guys since they enrolled. TJ Yates has the arm to be a serviceable backup. He's also a tremendous leader. Burney could have a very solid NFL career. He's great in run support from the corner spot and also has a nose for the ball. Little is a freak. He has tremendous size/speed combination for a WR. And since he played running back, he has some good moves after the catch. He could certainly work on his hands a little more, but that will come in time. And Pianalto is really, really good TE/H-Back. He finds his way into cracks in the defense in the 5-10 yard range and keeps the chains moving. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he has GREAT hands and like I said, keeps the chains moving.
Ayers was on NFL radio today. He said really the only time he was asked to rush the passer was on 3rd downs when he lined up as a DE with his hand in the dirt. Considering that maybe 1 out of every 7 downs is a third, that's not many chances. 4 sacks when used that way is respectable. I like him.
I live in NC as well and have seen those guys for years. Whether Yates would be a serviceable backup depends upon one's definition of "serviceable." IMO he wouldn't be. He's not that accurate, and not that poised. There were several games this year where for a senior, he didn't show good leadership or poise at all late in the 4th Qtr. Burney is too slow for CB, imo if he has a future in the NFL it will be on STs or as a FS. I agree with what you said about Pianalto. I think he's a good prospect and should be a decent player in the NFL. I just took exception to the characterization of him as a "great" prospect. Little has physical tools, but his production at UNC didn't live up to those tools. He was a pretty big disappointment as a RB. A couple of my friends are HUGE Carolina fans and they hate him. I think his work ethic and character are questionable.
well since we wont have the backdrop of FA to deal with in prep for the draft the jets need to approach this in a slightly different way this year. imo they should "sacrifice" the day 2 picks and try and gather another pick or 2 in the first three rounds. they cannot patch things with free agency this time so they need to get starting material at DL and OLB. adding some rookie speed to this D will do wonders. i have no problem with quality over quantity at this point. jil
Brooks Reed please. OLB, DE and PUNTER!!!!1111 I'm worried Ayers will turn out to be Gholston-lite, not enough hands-in-the-dirt* * = hopefully I'll eat my words if we draft him.
He's crazy good in pass coverage though , one of his most under rated talents and could help our problem against TEs
I'll bow to your superior knowledge. From what I've seen and read about Ayers, he looks like another project pick. Hope I'm wrong.
He an overall solid linebacker , not exactly a pass rusher per say but he's just a do everything guy. he can play in any scheme whether it be our 34 , 43, or 46 defense , he's a threat because he'll never be a liability on the field. Now he could be somewhat of a project coming in and will need to learn our playbook but I think he could be a solid 8-10 sack guy with 80 tackles on average in a few years playing in this powerful of a defense.
Not enough hands in the dirt can be a good thing for us though. I feel like Ayers has the most diverse skill set of any of the options we've been talking about. He wasn't asked to rush much but when he did, he had good success. He was great in coverage. He is really the complete opposite of Gholston, who was the ultimate one trick pony. If you haven't watched a youtube of him, do so-- you'll probably change your mind. For shits and giggles, watch an old one of Gholston as well. IMO his chances of being a bust are as little as anyone out there, but who am I to say.
You can see how Gholston just bull rushes and beats slower lineman while Ayers reads plays and makes great hits, also takes excellent angles to the ball for tackles for losses. Another thing, while watching this rememeber that video isnt a "highlight" video of Ayers like Gholstons is, and he still makes great plays.
Yates throws a really good deep ball. He's never had an issue with that. His decision making was more than questionable at times. However, two seasons ago, he spent most of his time running for his life because the o-line was decimated. And this season, Carolina had a constant revolving door at running back. It's hard to make terrific decisions with the ball when you're running all of the time. And he's not out-running anyone. To Burney, he's probably not as fast as he needs to be given his stature. But, I did see him handcuff Kenny Britt two seasons ago. But, you may be right about ST's or a move to FS. Greg's production wasn't extremely high because he played receiver for one whole season. This past season was supposed to be his breakout season, then agent-gate happened. It doesn't mean a lot, but I think McShay had him as the 3rd best senior WR and 5th or 6th best WR overall going into last season. He wasn't a huge success at RB, but he did play for a little over half a season when we were in a bind. That shows he has at least a few moves and willingness to play other roles. I have never heard anything in regards to him lacking a good work ethic. A lot of UNC fans have an issue with him because he got a lot of the blame for opening Pandora's Box to the NCAA last summer.
