Dude, I'm not the one calling professional baseball players I've never interacted with, "assholes".

I give people the benefit of the doubt until I actually see them being biased, insulting, and dismissive of people they don't know shit about. I don't know shit about what goes on in the Mets clubhouse, besides what the players say to the media. Neither do you.

And yeah, TommyJ, Eckstein was solid for the Angels from 01-04. I actually think he was more consistent and better overall on the Cardinals until 07, but he's completely done. Castillo was slightly better during his peak, but they both suck equally now. Eckstein has been an easy out and completely overmatched at the plate for the past two seasons.

Who cares if he's an asshole or not and why do you care what I think of the guy? I don't like the fact he didn't go to Walter Reed. That's my opinion, and that's something that cannot be taken from me.
I'm not here to start some stupid fight with you, so we agree to disagree.

cmon guys, it's just david eckstein

    ...................

funny thing is the reason why luis castillo got a 4 year contract was indirectly because of eckstein. at the beginning of free agency omar was showing interest in signing eckstein, at the time castillo was looking for a 2 year deal and would have liked to stay in NY......

the talks with eckstein broke down and by that time castillo had other 3 yr offers on the table, and omar went out and fucking overpaid to secure him in to play 2b, with a 4 yr deal in the 25 mil ballpark.

    i fucking hate luis castillo.

Great news the Perez Era is nearing its end accd to espn ny..I know we still pay the useless fuckers salary but not to have to see his 82mph "fastball" will be worth 12 million.

I have big hopes for Murphy at 2b , if he can clean up hhis fielding his bat alone should be a big boost over limp wrist castillo.

Props to you guys who take the shit of alll these glory seeking yankees fans day in day out, wish I could be there opening day. Making a trip over end of August to catch 4 / 5 games.

I am in Houston w/c 4th April and got all excited as I thought they had mets at home.....littlle did I realise!!!!

Odd that he was cut before Luis Hernandez, who I cannot believe will make the opening day roster in any capacity. And what the fuck is Perez still doing on the roster? They should've kept Tankersley on for a few more innings if they wanted to keep another lefty arm.

But hopefully this will mean more at bats for Turner, who seems like he's been the forgotten man this spring.

Honestly, every single 2nd basemen on this roster is terrible. Whether it's Turner, Hernandez, or Murphy, none of them will be any good at all. They really should have just kept Castillo because he is still probably the best one of the 4.

I don't think they could have kept Castillo in, considering he's not going to get any better, and his injury issues. Hernandez has never been adequate at any level in his career. He has no upside. At least Murphy can hit, especially against righties, even if he can't field for shit. If the roster space is open, having a Murphy/Emaus platoon with Hu as a late-inning defensive replacement should be way more productive than Castillo ever could be.

And Turner is a legitimate option. He batted .333 with 11 home runs in 78 games at Buffalo last year, and he's only 25. He gets on base and hits for power at solid rates throughout his minor league career, getting better at each level. And he's come up as a second baseman, so his glove shouldn't be a disaster. He should be an okay starter for a few years through his prime.

What do you consider an ok starter?

To me, Turner is probably a .260 hitter with average D. Whoohoo.

Sadly they don't really have too many options. My guess is they have to go with Murphy as it's either now or never with him. He's young but the clock is already ticking.

.260 for 140 games is still better than what I would predict Castillo could put up.

I would guess between .260 - .270, but with a little more power than Castillo had, and at this point in his career, better range. I think that would be okay at the bottom of the lineup, and he has enough patience to get on base at a good rate.

I definitely see Murphy sticking on the roster. And he has the best bat out of the bunch, but I just don't see them being comfortable with his glove at second every day. I predict he'll be on the roster as a utility player on opening day, but will likely get a fair amount of starts at second over the course of the season. I'm also guessing Emaus gets every chance at the beginning of the season.

Castillo was everything that was wrong under minaya...overpaid , unproductive and seemingly careless to the fans who pay his wages.

All we ask is a bit of hustle...give me hernandez / harris etc at .260 over castillo at a laclustre .280 as long as it means we never have to witness another play like the pop up! Dropping the ball was bad enough..standing there like a fucking retard was even worse!

I'm very surprised to hear you say this. The Mets are not making the playoffs this year, and Castillo has absolutely no upside. The fact that he immediately told the media that he complained to Alderson and Collins that they were unfair to him this spring because they didn't use him tells me all I need to know about his cluelessness regarding his abilities. I would much rather have an unknown in there (who might very well stink, but might get better) than a singles hitter (hasn't had an OPS over .750 for 5 years) who has the range of a fire hydrant.

I think the Alderson and the Wilpons deserve credit for eating his contract, just like they said they would - plenty of people have been saying that they were too cheap (or too poor) to do that. There is also the symbolic aspect of this, which Alderson acknowledged played a part. Castillo represented everything that was wrong with the Minaya regime (even more than Perez, who plenty of people wanted re-signed), and cutting ties with him sends a message that fans can appreciate.
