I know it sounds silly, but I'm a little gun-shy with Ohio State DE's and OLB's at the moment. I would be a lot more excited about Heyward if not for that Gholston debacle. What Say You?
I'm scared of certain schools entirely (cough Texas cough), but the Ohio State thing doesn't bother me tooo much. After all, Mangold. However, I personally hope we'd take Justin Houston over Heyward. I understand he's not that agile, but a guy who gets off the ball first almost every time is very valuable to me.
I would almost certainly take Justin Houston over Cam Heyward he isnt a very good athlete and would gve us what we already have on the Dline
I don't like the Patriots being 2 spots ahead of the Jets. I think the Patriots took the cornerback we wanted last year. They win the division but they get to pick ahead of us? Where is the justice in that? We get penalized for beating them in the playoffs. The Jets don't need to let on who they are after or the Patriots will block us again.
the justice being that we are the better team than NE? thats not good enough for you? We won 2 out 3, and thats what makes us better, and we went further in the playoffs, we deserve to be picking behind the pats. Wilson is the guy that the Jets have repeatedly been saying they wanted, they couldnt believe he was still there, and thought he would go #7 to the browns.
Jabba, Nice job, but I don't understand why you think Heyward is a more likely pick than Wilson. The Jets' only glaring need is at OLB - improving the pass rush and covering TEs and RBs over the middle. Martez Wilson fills that need perfectly and with a player that has a lot higher ceiling than Heyward, imo. If the Jets passed up either Wilson or Houston for Heyward, I think I'd freak out. If that happened and Heyward turned out to be just an average NFL 3-4 DE (which is what I expect) and Wilson and/or Houston turn out to be real playmakers, I'd probably drive to NJ and try to kick Tanny's ass.
Ha.. That is funny. Heyward is the safer pick to me by far. Some of you really need to go educate yourself before you make blind comments on a player some of you have never watched apparently. Our DL needs upgraded without a doubt. This isn't something that wouldn't make any sense. Tez Wilson and Heyward to me are the most well rounded prospects that will likely be sitting there when we pick. I personally am not a fan of Tez Wilson for other reasons. Highly unlikely. This isn't, Gholston. Heyward has a ton of potential and I think he will do his job very, very well. Everyone is really down on Heyward because of his Senior year, but he was projected to go in between the top 1-15 picks, until his Senior year dropped his stock. Even though people seem to think his production had dropped from previous years in college, I personally think he was being even more productive, due to the consistent double teams he had to face, he still put up good numbers despite it all. His stats weren't as good, but stats sure as fuck don't tell the whole story. I think Heyward is going to be a fantastic pick up. We'll see...
^^ I think you are mistaking what he meant by an average player. When I think average player I think good solid starter, but not top 10 at his position in the NFL, not a guy who will be gameplanned for. To me Heyward is that kind of prospect. He will be the guy who brings his lunchpail daily and he will never be a worthless player (ala gholston), but his ceiling is not exceptionlly high. Houston on the other hand, is by no means bust-proof (heyward is certainly not either, but he is the safer pick) Houston has the potential to be a top 5 player at his position in the NFL, and in the first round (especially at a position of glaring need) fans want a guy with that potential to be unblockable like a James Harrison, a Lamar Woodley or a Demarcus Ware.
he certainly is/was. I didnt think gholston would be a good pick at the time, but I at least expected an average career where he could be some kind of a situational pass rusher with at worst the skills of BT. but good lord, I might have better pass rushing skills than Vernon
All you need to know about the level of his bustivity is he was drafted #6 Overall, primarily if not exclusively as an edge rusher, and three years later his Jets career came to an end with a Grand Total of ZERO SACKS Now that is taking bustitude to a whole new level. BTW I knew we were in trouble right away when I saw him getting dominated by UDFA's in his rookie preseason. If you watched those preseason games he was getting dominated by guys who were sure to be flipping burgers a few weeks later. I remember watching that and thinking, oh my goodness, this is not good hmy:
I finally had a chance to watch a decent quantity of film today of Akeem Ayers, Martez Wilson, and Brooks Reed, also saw a little Justin Houston. I'm not done by any means, but from today's preliminary viewing, Reed is the guy I want, with Houston 2nd, Ayers 3rd and Wilson 4th. I clearly saw that Ayers is very athletic, made a lot of big-time plays, although most of them seemed to be against lesser competition, but also saw that he isn't as slow as his 40 times made him seem. At times he looked very quick, but on other occasions he seemed to frequently get to a spot on the field a split second too late to make a play. He seemed to read the plays very well and have very good instincts. It may be the film I saw of Wilson, but he didn't seem to make that many big plays. He also seemed slow reading plays, and took himself out of a number of plays just prior to the snap. The speed is obviously there, but Ayers, Houston and Reed all looked like more dynamic players based on the film I saw. However, I'ver ready the glowing reports on Wilson, know he's the top-rated MLB/ILB prospect, and has excellent speed. I know he has racked up some excellent stats, too, so know he makes plays. His highlight tape was the worst I've seen in terms of really showing a player at his best. I'll double check it again, but it was very jerky and seemed to skip some as well. I'm looking forward to finding more video of each of those guys, plus Jabal Sheard, Jeremy Beal, plus a few others.
