The original comment I had here was incorrect. Bent from TJB is confirming that what they're saying is 2011 dead money will not count against the cap for cut players. I still want to hear another media outlet confirm this.
I think you're missing the point. Releasing him NOW might make sense if nyjetscap is right and cutting a player now allows you to charge future dead cap to the 2010 season. I think the article is probably wrong but if it's right the Jets options are: 1.) Cut Cotch by Thursday, save 1.8 million in salary and 3.8 million in cap space in 2011. 2.) Cut Cotch sometime next year, save 1.8 in salary and take a 3.3 million cap hit in 2011 (if there's a cap). 3.) Keep Cotch next year, pay him 1.8 million in salary, have him count 3.8 against the cap. If you could do option 1 it's probably your best option. I don't think you actually can though.
If saving the almost $4MM in cap space allows them to sign a starter somewhere else (assuming he's the #3 WR) it improves the team IMO. Maybe it allows us to sign both Edwards and Holmes. Maybe we could do that anyway and it allows us to land a big FA like Cullen Jenkins. There are a number of possibilities.
Because you'd use the $4 million on a player or player who could help you more than Cotch; you can get 4 cheap veterans or two fairly solid veterans (e.g. guys like Wayne Hunter, Pool, Tomlinson or Taylor) for $4 million.
ok true, however right now cotch is our #1 wr.edwards and holmes are f.a. holmes already said he's not signing before f.a. period starts and edwards wll probably do the same.we cut cotch then we have absolutely no leverage with either of them.if some teams throws 10/year at holmes then edwards pretty much can write his own deal because we be over a barrel
Holmes was never signing before FA started because of the 30% rule. Hopefully they can lock Edwards up before the 4th.
but yousee my point right?cut cotch now and if i am edwards i wait to see this out. however they just tendered holmes at a 1 and 3 so nevermind
We all love Cotchery and have an emotional attachment to him because he's been a Jet and a true pro for a while, but we have to look on the logical side of things. Cotchery is not worth $4 million against the caps FOR THE JETS because he would be a 3rd receiver in a run first offense with other players like Holmes, Edwards, and Keller racking up targets. Cotchery may be worth that to another team that does not have the talent at receiver that we do, but if we could save that much it is a move that would be strongly considered. A cheaper 3rd receiver could do what we need in this offense maybe not to the level of Cotchery, but his role isn't that demanding in the first place to make up for the difference of a move we could make with the saved money.
I have no problem cutting J-co, if its a lock we have holmes and edwards back for the future. While it seems pretty likely we will have at least 1 back, its not as detrimental, but as of this very second, we have neither. If we cut j-co, don't get a deal done with BE before fa, then when FA actually starts, we spend all of our time in a bidding war for holmes and Cro (expecting BE to wait around for us) and Braylon signs elsewhere, and holmes follows the green, we have no receivers, since our #1 on the roster would be Patrick Turner. It would force us to overdraft a guy like Baldwin, or to try a massive trade up for a Julio Jones. either way we get fucked over for what we actually need most today a pass rusher. So we can't cut J-co unless braylon is signed to a deal before March 4th. In the end the 4 million while it could be extremely useful to us, is worth giving to J-co just to make sure we do not get left at the alter by Braylon and Tone.
Tannenbaum is a cap wizard. He broke into the league as a cap specialist, he doesn't make moves without considering the long term. Every year opposing fans clamor about how we will be in cap hell soon.... still waiting. I've never been concerned about this aspect of managment under MT.
Because no team can sign any FAs until the new CBA is in place. Thus the point that someone else made that there's nothing to be gained by cutting Cotch now since we don't know if we're even going to be able to keep Holmes even if we cut Cotch. You're thrown that stat out before, but it really doesn't mean anything for a couple of reasons. One, the run and pass plays were split almost 50-50. It just means we picked up a lot of first downs and got to run a lot of offensive plays. Two, that was last year. Things change. With Sanchez being another year more experienced, hopefully with marked improvements in his accuracy and decision making, the team could be throwing the ball a lot more this season, especially if Edwards, Holmes and Cotch are all here. Maybe. I can't see Stuckey commanding that much money. It may be a business, but it didn't stop a number of Jets from making public comments about their dissatisfaction with how things were being handled. i believe that Mangold was one of them. Personally, I'd rather keep Cotch and let Holmes walk in order to sign Jenkins. Then the Jets would have something on the order of $7 million to use towards Jenkins and another FA, rather than just $4 million. What about depth??? You get rid of Cotch, tie up all your WR money in 2 players, and then if one or both of them get hurt or suspended, the season is screwed. No thanks. I'd rather have Cotch at #2 and #3, #4, and #5 WRs who aren't that far behind, than have Holmes and Edwards and then have a huge dropoff to #s 3, 4 & 5. Agreed, so he should be fine in 2011. Maybe they ought to run a lot more out of those sets to keep opposing Ds off balance. Schotty is too darned predictable. He always runs the same play from the same formation. He needs fewer formations, and more plays run from each formation.
I didn't miss the point, I just totally disagree with it. Cotch is a very good player and is worth more to the team than the 3.8 million cap hit.
Taylor???? Pool??? Please!! What are you smoking. Taylor's done, and Pool is a stiff. He was with the team for 5-6 months before he bothered to learn the D. Screw him. I hope his ass is gone. Tomlinson is already gonna be back. I'm sure that Hunter will be as well. Cotch is worth 10x more than Taylor and Pool combined could ever be. If I was gonna consider cutting Cotch, it would have to be to sign a player like Cullen Jenkins, Haloti Ngata or Kamerion Wimbley (but the last two have been franchised). Even then, I'd rather cut Bryan Thomas and/or Pace than Cotch.
I totally disagree. I believe that Sanchez will be throwing the ball more and more. You also speak as if it's a lock that neither Edwards or Holmes would go down with a serious injury or get suspended. While the latter may be more likely than the former, getting rid of Cotch would leave absolutely NO depth at WR. Cotch isn't just a #3, he can play all 3 WR positions and is also the PR. He's worth every penny of that $4 million. I'm glad you guys aren't the GM.
Is it a lock that they do get injured? It's not completely realistic to have a 3rd WR taking up 4 million against the cap when the top 2 guys are elite at their positions and taking up a lot more. That is a lot of money locked up into one position. I'm glad you aren't either, or anyone else here. If I or anyone else was capable of being an NFL GM we wouldn't be posting here, I find it funny when people say this. I'm not saying to cut Cotchery, I'm just saying that considering the option is not as ridiculous as you are making it out to be.
That part now appears incorrect as the Redskins have signed free agent Atogwe away from the Rams. I'm guessing that one of two things have happened, either the two sides have agreed to a basic salary cap (unlikely) or the NFL has said any contracts existing prior to the new CBA would be grandfathered in to prevent salary cap issues should they arise from old contracts (more likely).
