Mathias Kiwanuka Cleared To Play 26th February, 2011 - 5:14 pm ESPN.com - Mathias Kiwanuka has been medically cleared to resume his football career, according to Giants general manager Jerry Reese. In a statement released by the team Saturday afternoon, Reese says the team received "final written evaluation" Friday evening that gave Kiwanuka clearance to return. Reese said he spoke with the defensive end, who plans on resuming his career after suffering a herniated disk in his neck that kept him out of all but the first three games last season. "We did receive the final written evaluation that gives Mathias medical clearance to return to the field," Reese says in the statement. "The consensus of all of the spine physicians and Dr. [Russ] Warren is that it is safe for Mathias to return to play. I have talked to Mathias and he is fully committed to returning to football." just because he is cleared to play, doesn't mean he should. Hopefully he can come back, but it shouldnt be with the Jets, let him go to a team thats rebuilding, like say the bills...
Our most glaring need is a pass rusher. Normally we would need to break the bank on a fa or draft one. This might be a rare opportunity where we could get a legit pass rusher for cheap. It's worth evaluating from Rex and tannys point of view. And if they were to take the risk I would absolutely still consider drafting an olb who can get to the passer our number one priority. I would look at kiwanuka the same way I do jenkins. Both major injury risks you can't count on but if healthy they can make major impacts.
Better be prepared to again move him to LBer because this guy in now way can play end in a 3/4. I for one would like to keep him, but where does he fit? JPP is going to be an absolute beast and unless like I said he goes back to SLB in a 4/3 he serves less purpose in the Giants 4/3 then he does in a 3/4.
Is he not still under contract???? Even if hes 100% fit now, getting over a herniated disk is no cut and dry matter. One knock and it could be all over for him. Being so high up as well, I can't think there would be a doctor that would say hes ok to play again, ever. Shame, because I think he would have developed into a great player.
He didn't exactly have much time in the NFL to prove it. I don't think thats too shabby, playing at differnt positions and still doing a good job. I used to watch him at BC and he was a beast back then. If he hadn't had the injuries he did and with the right guidance I think he could have made pro-bowl.
This is my point who said we have to break the bank get him on a low risk high reward type deal if healthy he would be our BEST passrusher so why not kick the tires to see what happens.
You were writing about his latest injury. "Even if hes 100% fit now, getting over a herniated disk is no cut and dry matter. One knock and it could be all over for him. Being so high up as well, I can't think there would be a doctor that would say hes ok to play again, ever. Shame, because I think he would have developed into a great player." I read that as if you were thinking that his latest setback was going to prevent him from being great. I then chimed in with the idea that if he was ever going to be great he would have shown it somewhere from 2006-2009. He was excellent at Boston College. He was a tweener in the NFL. He played both end and linebacker but was not good enough to stick at one position and be a dominant player.
I guess it's all about the $ and the contract for any FA we would go after,as it usually is. I mean i'm not opposed on taking a chance on anyone that may be a steal or whatever as long as the contract is set up in such a way that it won't hurt us if it doesn't work out.
