We need to rebuild the front seven - there's only one player that will be here for a long time and that's David Harris. Every other position/player will need to be replaced over the next three seasons or so.
Looking at the contracts (with the guaranteed money and all) & age & talent I think: Harris has a long term future with the Jets. Pace and Scott have 2 more years (after that you get considerable cap savings by cutting them). Thomas will have 1 year as a starter (in a 3 OLB rotation, I hope we bring him back this season while drafting an OLB to develop behind/with him) and 1 as a back-up. Pouha can start the next 3 seasons for us (he'll be 34 in his last season, that's ok considering to what age NT play and the fact he started playing late). DeVito (Which I know you think is over-rated) is a long term answer as a DT and can rotate in at NT. Ellis has 1 year left in the tank and who knows if he'll be brought back. But if you look at the rest of the team: QB - We're set for the long haul. RB - If McKnight & Conner develop (this season will be telling) we have a good future with Greene/McKnight/Conner. WR - even having only 2 out of Edwards/Cotchery/Holmes would be good enough for the next 3-4 years (considering just the starters)... having all 3 back would be great. TE - Keller will be our TE for a long time. OL - If Ducasse works out as a RT we're set for a while. The oldest guy is Moore and RG is the easiest position to replace. CB - If Wilson works out we're set with Revis+Wilson as our starters. S - I'm a big Lowery fan and think our S can get the job done. So really in the next 2 drafts we can really concentrate on rebuilding the front 7 and we can afford to go quality over quantity not having big needs at other positions.
I trust Tanny. Ideally the team should trade down in the first but if Tanny and company trade up and shuffle the roster I won't have a problem with it. As long as it's not something stupid like pulling a Ditka to move into the top 5 they've proven their success in years past by going after the players they want.
There is not one clear spot on the team we need to go after like when Tanny usually trades up. In 07, we had no corners so they moved up for their #1 corner on the board that Mangini absolutely loved. In 08 we traded up for a receiving TE that Shotty's offense needed. They thought he had the ability to also be their slot receiver, which we also didn't have. 09 we obviously really needed a quarterback so they made a big splash to get one. Tanny doesnt trade up for the sake of trading up. It's only if they have a need, and they see a player who really fits that need. I think he knows, similar to last year, that we are picking very far back and don't have the ammo to really move up to land a true "impact" guy. Plus we don't have a hole that absolutely needs to be filled like in 09 when it would have been Clemens or Ratliff as our qb. We are more in need of depth to bolster an aging defense.
I dont think this is true at all - if ever I get a chunk of time on my hands I will do the collating but I have looked over every roster in the NFL in one of he NFL preview mags (over a series of trips to the toilet) and if you actually look at the starting roster for each team by far and away the most common round in which they were drafted was the 1st round (no surprise) but after that you are more likely to see an undrafted free agent in the starting line up than a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Once you get past the 1st round and the first few picks in the second its much more of a crap shoot.
this is strictly an 'on average', math evaluation towards the draft. question: on average, how many players on a 56 man roster need to be replaced on an annual basis strictly due to age/retirement? QB: qb's last 15 yrs, so we need one qb every 15 yrs. that's 1/15 of a player per draft on avg. O-line and TE's: these guys last 12 yrs, so we need 1/12 of a player per draft times the 6 positions is 6/12 (or half a guy, on average, per draft) RB: running backs have the shortest career, at 4-5 yrs. so on avg, with 2 RB's we need to draft 1/2 a running back each draft WR: wide receivers last 12 years, so we need 1/12 a receiver times 3 receivers is 3/12 per draft, or a quater of a receiver per draft. D-line: these guys last 12 yrs, so we need 1/12 of a player per draft times the 3 positions is 3/12 (or on quater of a guy, on average, per draft) LB: line backers last 12 yrs, so we need to 1/12 if a line backer times 4 backers or 1/3 a LB each draft. DB: db's and safeties last 12 yrs as well, so we need, on avg, 1/3 a DB each draft all this adds up to: 1/15 + 6/12 + 1/2 + 3/12 + 3/12 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 2.2 players per draft, on avg, to offset the age/retirement of a 56 man roster. this is the 'bare minimum' and does not take into account backups, injuries, players leaving, players getting banned, players not panning out, etc.
Why are posters saying 56 man roster, did I miss something? Camp opens with up to 80 players, first cuts bring the team to 65, and final cuts bring the roster down to 53. Out of that 53 only 45 are active. (Plus the 3rd QB)
I read in a couple of places that if there isn't a CBA in place after by March 3 and before the draft, that teams wouldn't be able to trade their draft picks during the lockout. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
They can trade picks, no players can be traded during the draft I believe. I have liked Tanny's drafts with minimal picks. I am all for quality over quantity if they continue to pick the right players.
Also factor in that Rex is great at finding and bringing in UDFA, between that and free agency we will be fine depth wise. Draft quality because those are our starters.
That is correct. Picks can be dealt, but as of March 3 no players can be traded. I believe it's still OK to trade future picks as well, there was some article recently about teams potentially dealing futures for more '11 picks because teams won't be able to sign UDFAs until there's a CBA in place.
I think people are overlooking the last part of the quote "every draft has it's own story to it." Sometimes we will have an 09 and sometimes we will have an 06. Outside of Vernon Gholston (which we know was Manginis pick) Tanny has always brought awesome players in through the draft. I trust him if we draft three guys or 6 guys, as long as we get good players I dont really mind. Tanny has different philosophies for every draft, l wouldnt read too much into the first part of the quote
Brandon Meriweather was the only pick of 11 total picks that made the Pats roster from the 2007 draft. Can you imagine what would happen here if 10 out of 11 picks didn't make it through training camp? Quality >>> Quaintity
So...let me get this straight. DeVito is underrated because he's white..and Woodhead is overrated because he's white.... Man...Someday a white man will get a fair shake. /sarcasm :rofl2:
