My reasoning behind this is that we're not a team looking to sign free agents this year. Because we are a developed team as opposed to rebuiling one, isn't it better that no free agency period and trades exists this offseason? That way we don't have rebuilding teams getting better or even potentially try to grab one of our FAs. The draft is all that happens in the event of a CBA lockout, which is all we are pretty much going to do either way. Am I wrong on this?
i disagree. we need to be active in free agency to address alot of the depth issues to find quality role players since we will be spending a bunch of money attempting to extend Harris, re-sign Holmes/Edwards/Cro/Smith we'll prolly only get 2 of the players out of the 4. 3 if were lucky we need another safety, possibly a slot reciever/returner especially if we lose Smith and 1 of Holmes/Edwards, and alot of front 7 depth and after being that short of the SB a second year in a row it would be nice to see how much of the Rex factor in acquiring FA's is real and how much of it is players just admiring his attitude
I think (I could have been dreaming) that I heard or read something strange about the CBA where they could basically come to an agreement to continue the current situation for one season. Under that scenario there would be no free agency, which meant that players could only play for the team they played for the prior year. I don't know, I swear I'm not making this up, but I don't even remember where I got it from. If this is a possible scenario I think it obviously helps us.
There is the possibility, if the process drags out long enough, that the league operates next year under some sort of agreement where players who should be free agents next year just stay where they are and take the same pay. That'd be good for the Jets, because ultimately the Jets are likely to see a net loss of talent from last year's team to this years (ie, it'd mean keeping all of our FAs, when that's otherwise unlikely). However, it'd be terrible for the players, and terrible for the game, if the negotiations drag out that long. So I don't think Jet fans or anybody else should be hoping for that. Unless your family owns an NFL team. Then you should probably hope for that.
I think the OP is right. Assuming as I do that the Jets want to basically bring back most of their FA's and not make wholesale changes, this set of circumstances would appear to relatively benefit a team in that position. Those who I think have mistakenly assumed or concluded that the Jets want to make lots of changes would not see there to be an advantage, but see the preceding paragraph.
Bingo. The key word here is relative. Every team is going to experience the chaos. Of course we need to make changes, but so does every other team. It would hurt everybody, but the Jets would be hurt less than others.
Exactly. Another factor other than the roster itself and the Jets being relatively stable there is any team that is installing a new offense or grooming a new starting Qb would be relatively more adversely affected, since a prolonged lockout gives them insufficient time to get ready. A team with an established Qb and no significant coaching changes on the offensive side has the advantage, too. That is also the Jets.
Does anyone know if there is a date for this to happen or they can just agree on it and its done and all of the players stay where they are at?? I am going to hope for this!!
i lived through the last lock out with 'replacement players' and some players crossing the line to play. if the nfl goes that rout, which of our players might 'cross the line' and play?
there's no date. They just have to decide to go ahead with continuing it for one more year. They'd be stupid not to do that considering they could have the year, make they money they are supposed to, and have another year of getting shit done.
yeah i think Adam Shefter said something like this the other day on ESPN.. he was saying how fucked coaches would be once the CBA expires there isn't suppose to be any communication between coahces and the players.. but the main thing with this scenario is that the owners and NFLPA have to agree upon it... and truthfully if that happens.. all i see is this extending the process since it relieves some of the pressure of getting a new CBA figured out.. but we'll see.. right now we still have the capability to resign our own players.. and thats all im looking forward to hearing..
I could be mistaken, but I believe (and have heard elsewhere) that if the NFLPA de-certifies, the teams can actually hire scab players
here's an article that goes through a bit of the legal issues of the new cba. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gabriel-a-feldman/the-legal-issues-behind-t_b_820579.html
