I'd love to see Champ here. That's having the best CB in the NFL and the best CB of the last 10 years on the same team.
Theres no doubt Cromartie is absolutely a little overated. Sure a large part of it was our pass rush was complete garbage, putting this guy up against some dangerous receivers for a long time. If Cromartie is asking for big bucks theres no way int he world hes remotely worth it. But since hes got a ton of baggage, and in a pretty desperate situation (has a billion kids, owes child support up the ass, never collected a huge payday) I think its entirely possible he is willing to accept an incredibly friendly contract to the team. Mostly since he cant afford a year without insurance for his kids and to fall that far behind on support/payments. If hes willing to bite on a 5~ million a year, that works out far better in our favor than signing Aso or Bailey ever would
Let Wilson step in in a few years? Wilson contract will be over by then. Wilson is going to be the #2 on this team unless Aso comes here for cheap. I expect the Jets to go after a DB with a late rounder and find another drew coleman type.
A team is going to pay Cro exactly what he wants. And its because of the children and all of that shit is the reason why he won't take a friendly offer. There is a team that will give him what he's looking for.
No way man, Rex loves corners more than feet. Aso wants to win, he's gonna play for mad cheap cus everybody wants to play for the Jets. ASO IS HAPPENING. :raiders:
Except if theres not a season he wont get a dime. And if theres no season there goes insurance for his family. Or if the free agency is delayed enough (ie they dont come to an agreement till august/September) there goes his hopes for a bidding war. If hes gotta chose between a mediocre paying deal that guarentees him some money, or a 50 50 between making bank or going broke, whose to say he wont take the safe rout. Its not like 5 or 6 million a year is peanuts, the guy will still be able to do the same stupid shit all these other guys do.
Champ's skills have eroded but he would be a viable option for a year or two as a #2 corner. He's already made a shitload of money during his career, so i could absolutely see him taking a lesser deal to try and win a ring. definitely something to consider. Tanny truly is a genius. His ability to assess where we can input cheap/high risk/players willing to take less is remarkable.
How long of a contract do you expect them to give Bailey ? Im sure nothing they cant get out of after 2-3 years MAX. The guy is going to be 33 in a few months. Nobodys giving a 33 year old corner a 4 year contract, and if we did it would be for peanuts. We have Wilson for at least another 4 years. I mean if Wilsons not ready this year, we cant just go out and sign another corner for just 1 season. Or give up another draft pick for a 1 year rental
Well based on some of the things he has recently said, he sounded desperate. And if this report is true, or just strategically leaked by the Jets to make him more desperate, well that just gives him less leverage and would make him more desperate. If hes desperate enough, I wouldnt be the slightest bit shocked to see him cave into an incredibly friendly deal for the team. Hell thats before even factoring in whether the guy likes it here or not.
If you think this business is going to watch all that money disappear you're crazy. Even if its mid september someone is going to get Cro because he's a top free agent this season.
And why the hell would this team want a 33 yr old CB anyway when they just drafted a CB who showed promise in his last game and the playoffs? And if he were to get a deal, it would be the one year rental you speak of - similar to the Jason Taylor deal. He wouldn't be here for the whole 3 years, taking wilson's spot who isn't a nickel corner. I don't get why people forget that Wilson made progress this season playing behind Cro and Revis. He's the #2 CB next year, unless this small outside chance of Aso coming here happens, and I'm still doubting that.
I really hope that you guys aren't gettin too worked up on having Aso come here. This is all just specualtive talk here and some of you are taking it way too seriously. If he makes it here I'll be the first one to start a thread praising him but until the day he signs a NYJ contract I am definitely not getting my hopes up. Would honestly rather see Wilson step into that role and show us that he's become the player we all want him to be and use that cap space for other purposes.
Why would they want Champ Bailey instead of Kyle Wilson? Because he's far, far, far, far better for next year. Remember, this is a team with Super Bowl aspirations right NOW.. not 3 years from now or something like that. Kyle Wilson made very little progress this year. I don't see how anybody could dispute that. He was at best our 4th cornerback this year. If they let Cro walk for a big long-term deal somewhere else and sign Bailey for a year then that's a great move for us. Champ was excellent this year. If they can sign Aso AND the receivers, then that's an amazing move for us, but I doubt that could happen unless he takes a huge pay cut to play for a winner and with his buddy Revis. But I don't take stock in any of this nonsense.. nobody knows who the Jet are prioritizing or if Cro is going to come back. If we go into the season with Wilson as our clear cut #2 corner next year, then that's a bad thing. Nothing he showed this year should make us think anything other than that. This is a guy that absolutely couldn't beat out Drew Coleman this year, and who was about equal to or actually behind Cole. That isn't good. Does he have potential for the future? Absolutely. But for a team that has a limited pass rush, and for a coach who supposedly loves good corners, having Kyle Wilson as our clear #2 isn't a good thing going into a season where we have high Super Bowl hopes.
