We need to get younger and faster on defense. We should let Ellis sign elsewhere and draft a DE in round one. If Ellis wants to sign for cheap then maybe bring him back.
I think he knows he won't get a big contract because of who the Jets have to resign. He'll have to take a paycut or he's playing for someone else this year. He still has it, but he can't take the majority of the snaps. He can start the game, but he can't play 70% of the snaps. He has to be down to 58%.
He can be a great force come the end of the season I think while we need to get younger at DE we need to keep some leadership and Ellis has easily a good year left inside of him...We can probably sign him pretty cheap!
Ellis will come back, hes been a Jet his whole career he understands how much money they are going to have to spend to keep the team together.I think he will resign with us bc he wants to retire a jet and win a ring
Throughout the season I was set on him going another direction next year....but the way he played in the playoffs while injured changed my mind. He showed tons of heart and I want him back.
Hard to compare the two fairly, and I have my green shades on here, but when Ellis is healthy I think he's still among the best 3-4 DEs in the league. Admittedly though, health is a huge concern. I would really like to see Ellis return. I doubt he will be offered an outrageous contract by another team, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gave the Jets a hometown discount - he has said in no uncertain terms that he wants to retire a Jet.
Kinda hard to find a NT who owns the run and stays healthy all season. Ellis makes more flashy plays, he gets more recognition.
Pouha has been arguably the most important player we have on the DL. The last two years he's filled in for Kris Jenkins and played as well if not better than Big Jenks.
And lets not forget about Ropati Pitoitua he should be a huge part in the D line of the Jets next season. The man is big and strong and should really be a factor for the team in 2011/2012. pats-hater is on the right track by saying Ellis should retire a Jet the man has been a lifer for this team.
Out of curiosity, when is the last time the jets had Lifer? a 10+ year player drafted to NY and was here all the way through his career? Outside of Chrebet I am failing to come up with any other recent names for the Jets to go wire to wire for a decade or more. Actually now that I think about it, Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones would be two others. But those three are the only players I can think of that had lengthy significant careers with only the Jets since the 90's.
I agree with Sir Hasty's statement here. 1 of our top priorities is to shore up the DL with pass-rusher(s) that can produce pressures & sax (along with being effective on ground game). Going the "youth" route may net us a capable lineman yet he may be lacking in experience which is where keeping Shaun (at a reduced "price") may prove to be invaluable. However, if "Tann-'da-Bomb" has the opportunity to pull a "SanHolmes" steal or caps out netting a premier DLman - emotions aside - Shaun, it's been real; but I wanna win & win NOW!
to be totally honest, I think it's going to be quite a while before the league sees another Santonio Holmes deal like we pulled off last year. It was a perfect storm of circumstances being that Pitt had Holmes replacement in house (Wallace) Holmes was suspended for the first month of the year, he only had 1 year remaining on his deal, and with Pitt going through all the Ben problems, they wanted to send Ben a message "Shape up, or you'll be shipped out" For perspective maybe a week after we acquired Holmes for a 5th rounder, the dolphins got a 5th rounder for Ted Ginn Jr. So yeah, it was an anomalous trade and let's be real, who actually expected Holmes to play so well all year after missing a month of time? I didn't. I thought he would be pretty good and a great compliment to Edwards, but at times he was electrifying and truly special. And at times (see Dolphins game) he dropped big passes that cost us. We got good Tone much more often than bad Tone, and I hope he (and Edwards) is back next year for Sanchez. The chances the league sees a trade like Holmes next offseason, or any time in the near future for that matter is very unlikely.
Now that we've officially tagged Harris, Ellis's prospects are on the skids. He still has what it takes to be a contributor, but much like sentiment already expressed; I'm only for bringing him back for the right price. Coupled with occasional flashes of brilliance, his rock solidness and Jetness have made me a big fan. The presumable money squeeze could mean we lose him. While it would be nice to keep him, he is about to fall into Mo Lewis territory. Best case scenario would be a modest 2 year contract, maybe $2 mil per plus incentives. Otherwise, it's been a good run MeShaunda
Ellis is a great player that shows up in big games. Hopefully we can get him for cheap 1-2 year contract and keep him as a rotational player or for him to tutor a young draft pick.
