Some thoughts: - I think Ellis can definitely get around $3 million from a 3-4 team out there if the Jets are not willing to pony up for him. I'd love to have him back, but I think he is likely to be gone. I think DE is a position the Jets are going to look to go cheap on. - I really expect Jenkins to come back for a reduced salary + incentives/bonuses. Make him earn that money. Unlike Ellis, I don't think teams will be lining up for Jenkins after his 2 injuries. - Calvin Pace has a 7.1 million dollar cap number next year. I think he will be high on Tanny's list of players to call about restructuring or a slight pay cut. There is NO WAY if he was released he'd command that much money on the open market, so I hopefully he and his agent would be open to talking.
The problem with Pace is that it's all dead money. There's nothing you can do about that number afaik.
Shedding Hartstock's 1.65 million will be nice. He's a good blocker, but he commits penalties at the worst times and is absolutely useless as a receiver. I hope Mulligan can fill that role, or else we might as well just use an extra lineman in those spots. They kept Cumberland on the roster all year because they obviously really like him and have hopes for him next year. It's kind of crazy to think last year we had 2 FB's and 4 TE's on the roster.
Im thinking Cromartie will be the only real big FA to leave because we have Wilson as his replacement. Wilson is much better at playing the outside and as long as Cro is here he wont have that chance. With Cro gone as well as all the others listed we should be able to sign Hunter/Smith/Edwards/Holmes. If Ellis and Jenkins come back cheap we can use our 1st rounder on OLB. We still have Pitoutia (spelling?) and Gilbert to put some youth on the line if need be.
I reworked the numbers, got rid of LT and Brunell and didn't re-sign Brad Smith. I'm sure some numbers will be different one way or another, but I'm sure Tanny can work some magic and land most of our big guns back in 2011.
We aren't in that bad of a situation. First off, we can get a lot of these guys back. And lets say we cant bring back a reciever, we could take a risk and give like a 4th rounder for ochocinco for the year. Plus Plaxicos coming back. We have many options, i'm not worried. Plus I think our team will be better next year as Sanchez improves more and more.
That looks better, although I still say that number is too low for Cromartie. Luckily, the bigger the contract, the more you'll see a drop in first year cap number. You can likely add another $4 million in space just from the reduced first year cap hit on Edwards, Holmes, and Harris if they're all signed at those numbers.
I can see some dopey team giving Cro 5.5 He's a number 1 on a shit team with cap space - same with Clements and the 49ers.
Yea I feel like another team would give Cro big money whether he deserves it or not. The question is do you think Wilson is ready to take over Cro's spot. I think he is while most are against it. Problem is with so many FA's we can afford to cut the players who have their backups already on the team. I.E. Woody and Cromartie with Ducasse and Wilson.
Something has to give somewhere, and personally I'd rather it be on the defensive side. Only because I think Rex is that good, where he can basically coach up anyone. I want Sanchez to have all the tools he can going into his 3rd year, who knows maybe our offense will be top dog in 2011.
I think Wilson is ready because his only problem was ball skills in the NFL. He was never burned like Highway 22, and he is never going to be called "toast" in his career. His trouble was locating the ball and having a feel for it at the NFL level. Revis had the same thing. It gets better with time. He had some tough breaks this season. Facing veteran WR against Baltimore who were going to make him look bad in his 1st game. He loses confidence mid season which isn't uncommon for a rookie skill position player. He comes back strong against the Bills and Steve Johnson who is a good player. Then he "drops" a 95MPH fastball from Big Ben on a 7 yard slant, and everyone ignores that he beat his WR to the inside and got in position for the INT. Cromartie and Revis weren't going to catch that ball either. I think by the end of camp, if there is camp, he'll be fine. He'll be in even better shape with a better pass rush.
Me too. I would love to keep Edwards and Holmes. Rex made our D number 1 after being middle of the pact the year before. Rex will never coach a D that is not top ten and it will most likely be top 5. If we improve to a top ten O which I think we can if we retain Holmes and Edwards we are a scary team.
Exactly. When he shut down Johnson it proves that he is a good #2 cb. He also does not have the baggage that Cromartie does which is why in the end I think Cro has to go to where he gets the most money. I also like how physical Wilson is which is a nice change from Cro. If he learns to find the ball better he could be great.
I would rather keep Bryan Thomas than overpay these guys: Shaun Ellis 3,000,000 Trevor Pryce 1,000,000 Lance Laury 750,000 Drew Coleman 1,000,000 James Ihedegbo 1,000,000
I disagree with Ellis(who i wouldnt pay 3mil.. 1 year for 1.5mil) Drew Coleman if he accepts 1$ is an excellent 3rd 4th string corner And James Ihedegbo is good for special teams, and blitzing like Coleman.
you'd rather keep a overpaid BT who leaves no cap hit if cut over two guys in Ellis and Pryce who make plays in the backfield?
Pryce will be what 34, 35? Ellis is also 30+. I think you are dreaming if you think he will take less than $2 mil per year. Thomas is a productive starter. I would try to extend Thomas for a lower salary but would be happy to keep him at his current salary if it only means losing Ellis, Pryce, Coleman, and Ihedigbo. If we have as much cap space as the OP says we could keep Thomas and both DBs.
