I really don't think Braylon Edwards is a "big time receiver". Santonio - definitely is. Brad brings alot more to the table in worth on special teams and the occasional offense plays. Just my opinion though and I'm known to be wrong quite often.
I'd rather have Edwards than Holmes personally. He fits our offense perfectly and is IMO a big time receiver. He's not elite, but he's right up there with the next group.
well, you're wrong again. Occasional offensive plays and some KR duty does not beat a tall weapon for Sanchez. Its not even close. With Westhoff as the ST coach, Brad Smith is replaceable.
A million dollars IS a big number. There is no way playing for the Jets is worth a million dollar paycut. Players leave successful teams for less successful that offer more money all the time. Everybody expecting these players to take million-dollar paycuts just so they can play for Rex Ryan are completely delusional. This fallacy is right up there with "they've already had their payday, they'll take a paycut to win." Somehow NFL players are exempt from the basic laws of economics and human incentive behavior.
What? No, contract values escalate every year. After Boldin's deal, Marshall drove up overall prices at the top end already. They'll rise higher after that. All I said was that Edwards wasn't going to get the same contract that Boldin got, $7 million per season. I didn't say anything about ranges, and there's a big difference between 6 million and 7 million per season when you're talking about a team with approximately 20 roster spots unspoken for. That extra million is an above average backup at some positions.
OK, I misunderstood what you were saying when you said escalator. I thought you meant Boldins contract had escalators in it. Sure the $1MM makes a difference in building the roster. My point is that it's about the same range when guessing what his worth is. That's all. I wouldn't be surprised if he came in at 6 or 7 million/year.
Remember we were worried about our kick coverage taking a step back cus we lost Wallace Wright? Our kick coverage was excellent this year
Is this post a joke? There was no cap last year. In 2009, it was $127 million. Projected cap for 2010 was $138 - 140, but obviously there was no real cap. Our payroll pre-cuts right now is $117 million. No, but a history of problems with his team does. The fact that he's on record as being willing to retire when he didn't want to play in Cleveland also has to have some GMs a bit apprehensive. See, I view his market value at about $6 - 7 million, but I think he gets the low end of that because of his past. I'm not saying it will drop down to $5 million, although that would be our ideal situation, but I think $6.5 million may be a bit high. This is a guy with ONE 1000 yard season on his resume, albeit with mostly crappy teams. Teams don't generally pay for potential on a receiver's second contract. They pay for production. Edwards has question marks for any team other than the Jets right now. As someone, maybe you, mentioned earlier, the only other team that may actually be an appealing destination for him is Chicago, and I don't see a sorry team taking a big money chance on him reverting to his unhappy self.
I really think we could get it done prior to March 4th for $6 million and give him a bit of security in the form of a signing bonus. I'm still clinging to the hope that Tanny is simply keeping his cards close to his vest and is working to deal with the only FA he can deal with at the moment.
there are also alot more opportunity to make $$ in New York BTW. Players will take paycuts to play for Rex Ryan. Probably not young players, but Vet's will.
Sure, if we don't replace them with anyone equivalent. That'll be in the 2012 draft, and compensatory picks start in the 3rd round. We'd likely get a 3rd rounder for any top names that we lose, since they'll sign big contracts and we won't be paying as much for new players signed to replace them. Smith would be lucky to net us a 5th, but his will probably be canceled out.
Interesting. I never knew he took it that far. We should thank Braylon for his emotional comments, and the city of Cleveland for sucking so much. That I'm with you on and even mentioned that Braylon's production doesn't match Boldin's since we have been using Boldin's contract as a comparison to what Braylon might be getting. I did mention Chicago, and I wonder if his camp sees the same thing - he's kinda fucked in terms of his options when it comes to being happy. I don't think at this stage in his career he wants to chase big dollars and go through the hell he went through in Cleveland. He just wants peace, fun and winning, and he'll only find it here. The more I write this out the more I think Tanny knows he has Edwards in his back pocket. So the only question is what will Holmes want, because plenty of teams will risk that one year suspension for his type of production and his ability to be clutch at will. That one year suspension has to bring his 8M asking price down, or at least have a slew of clauses that negate guaranteed money as well as Holmes paying money back if he's suspended for the year. This is going to be the most interesting offseason we've ever seen.
That's something that doesn't get discussed enough. This market, and the way this team markets themselves grants opportunity to talented players to get plenty of endorsements in Manhattan. That, the new facility, Rex, winning - those 4 elements is why the Jets are at the top of many FAs lists. Its good to be a Jet fan right now. This is who the Redskins wish they were.
NOT true...There's a guy by the name of Sam Bradford in St. Louis that won Offensive Rookie of the Year and actually had better stats than our man, Sanchez. I'm sure Bradford would LOVE to have a guy like Edwards (espcially after watching his receivers drop a gazillion balls on the Sunday night "playoff" game against Seattle.)
Doubtful. They have a ton of young receivers that they want to develop, including one (Danario Alexander) who has a similar build to Edwards and is a better blocker than most people realize. If there's a receiver they'd be after, it's Holmes since Bradford has done so well with the small quick receivers on the team, but my guess is they use their money elsewhere and see how Bradford does with a full season of Mark Clayton and the further development of Amendola/Robinson/Gilyard/Alexander.
