http://www.thejetsblog.com/2011/02/11/opinion-denials-are-circumstantial-not-draconian/ I like this line of thinking. So for those who say its a "dick move." Maybe it isn't.
I don't buy it - DT could have made his OWN decision that the Raiders are a blackhole, why would it be necessary for REx to make that decision for him. To me both situations read like Rex being Rex. He doesn't want to lose them, so he wont let them interview. I'm sure he was upfront with them about it and I doubt there are any hard feelings, but that's my guess.
You've said that and you might be right that they didn't want the interviews but that's not what the article says. The article assumes they wanted the interviews but that the Jets did them favors by not letting them take the interviews (because Thurman shouldn't go to the Raiders and because Callahan, well, screw him if he wants the Titans job, he's better off sticking with the Jets and hoping Schotty screws up).
isn't the title asst. head coach all they need to protect Calahan? It makes any OC title below him and gives the Jets the right of refusal.
I don't know what to make of the DB coach, I do think that the BC denial is a strategic play on BS future with the Jets, if BS did not have a contract through the end of 2011 football season he probably would have been canned this year. If the Jets extend BS contract after this year than we can assume that Rex is just being a jerk and not letting these guy's interview because he wants to keep his staff intact and not let these guy's have an opportunity to move on.
this right here. id be suprised if it played out any other way unless they brought in someone with an obvious amount of more credentials/experience
That title is irrelevant. Unless someone wants to interview one of our coaches for a HC position we can deny them the interview.
The bullshit flag can only be thrown by anyone if the Jets allow BS to interview and no one else. It goes along the lines of an earlier post about Bs entering his last year. I believ he would be the only guy they would allow to leave. Unfortunately for some Jet fans, this ship must have sailed last year when BS declined the Bills interview.
Maybe Rex is taking the hit for them wanting to stay. Like it has been mentioned who wants to go to Oakland and maybe Tenn is not what BC wanted. So rather than have those guys turn possible jobs down and ruin their chance elsewhere in the future, Rex just said no and the door stays open for them in the future. Just a theory.
well, the team has to announce the denial. You have the same theory I do - that the coaches don't want to go to take the interviews because its a waste of time. I don't think the coaches are allowed to personally tell the media they don't want the interview.
I read the refusals this way: Rex personally went to both Thurman and Callahan and asked if they were interested in interviewing for the positions. Both told him they wanted to stay here rather than, in Thurman's case, work for a madman with no job security and in Callahan's case, work with a team with absolutely no QB on the roster. Neither wanted to get dragged in the mud so they decided to stay here. The Jets, after consulting with both, refused to allow them to be interviewed. Like I said, just my take and opinion. After all, I like the result that they are both staying though.
Similar logic for denying Callahan could be used in explaining the Jets' denying Thurman. Pettine may very well be working for another team in a year or two as well, only for the exact opposite reasons as Schottenheimer. Rex thinks very highly of Pettine and suspects that he'll be getting an HC job offer within the next two seasons(I can't remember the exact date of the presser but I know I've heard him say it). If Pettine does take an offer for HC elsewhere, Thurman is the next best in-house candidate to take over for him as DC. He's coached in the system since Rex was in Baltimore and he's one of Rex's favorite coaches on the team.
I would love to see our organization hire from within, and keep the system intact as you could say ... breed our own coordinators, not having to go out and look for a OC or DC
