Something that occurred to me this morning. Due to the un-settled CBA, there is a good chance that the NFL free agency period will not begin until after the draft. Typically Tanny likes to get the majority of his free agents and roster squared away before the draft to fill any holes so that he is doesn't have to draft to a position when the Jets select, this strategy allows him to stay true to his board and pick the highest rated player available. That strategy might not be available this season, they are going to have to try and predict who they can realistically sign and not sign for next season, both our free agents as well as other teams free agents. Its going to make it difficult to figure when they should draft certain positions such as WR. Can they sign both Holmes and Edwards or only one, that questions will tell how early they would need to target another WR if at all.
It's a good point, but luckily all teams face the same challenge. Just another challenge to pile onto an already extremely challenging offseason for Tanny. I think we'll find out a lot about him this year.
I think the CBA will be settled right after the SB. The NFL and players are making too much money. It's a giant bluff in my opinion.
Its great to think it can be reduced to just that, but your argument is completely unsupported. There are major concerns with the players, and I must admit, I am on their side. Specifically, the after NFL care of the players. Too many guys with injuries are left to fend for themselves in what little retirement money they have. I'm not talking about guys like Strahan or Jerry Rice. The older generation of players that are out there dying with a pension of little more than a few hundred dollars a month. Granted they played in a different time, but the pension system for the players needs to adjust according to something. I don't know what, be it cost of living, amount of money made during that players career, endorsement money, etc. Even my SIG player is only pulling in $650 a month and he played for 10 years and retired in 91. And he was only able to collect that starting at 55yo so its not like he retired from the NFL at 32 and has been pulling in $650 a month for all that time. The other major concern, and it should be a huge concern of the fans as well, is the rookie contracts. THANK GOD SANCHEZ IS A PLAYER. Imagine if he was Jamarcus, or Leaf, or Akili? How many years would his contract have set back this organization? Its terrible that a new guy like Sam Bradford, get $50M guaranteed and no one know if he even makes it out of training camp. Its a franchise killer. Besides that, I'd rather have my team cut guys like Gholston after 1 or 2 seasons and have more money to grab guys like Patrick Willis or Antrel Rolle. I love Woody Johnson and what he has done for our franchise, excluding the PSL debacle, but he is still writing the checks for our players, just as any owner is. I can't write anyone's check so the owners have much deeper pockets than any player. I have to give my nod to the players over the owners.
God, this fucking bickering between billionaires and millionaires over money the average person won't see in a lifetime is disgusting. You want the players to work more? Fucking pay em. And increase the health benefits, these people kill themselves every week. Also the NFL is incredibly profitable don't insult our inteligence okay? Get this done you pricks. There is only so much a fan can take...
Well, I think this offseason will be different than offseasons past because the #1 priority is retaining out own guys as opposed to getting new guys. I'd imagine the front office heads have a little insight into what a new CBA would look like salary cap wise.
I know dude, I made a thread about it. It's hard to speculate on what the cap situation is gonna be since the owners want to lower salary...you can't really lower salary and then raise the cap to 148. If it's 148 I'll do backflips cus we can re-sign everybody and then bring in a big name free agent and still have money for our draft picks.
this off season could make or break the next few years of this franchise...but i have faith in tanny to get it done
The owners want to lower the percentage of profits available for the salary cap. That's a big difference from what you said.
BINGO on the bolded part. They want to decrease the players share of the profits from 60% to 42%... that is absurd, but at the same time, the owners are the bosses and when my boss gives me orders I usually follow them, although I may not always like it. No one makes these guys play football for a living. Personally, I would like to see 51% go to the players and 49% go to the owners.
Remember if they raise the cap to 148 the cost of resigning the guys are going to go way up; Cleveland and Buffalo and every other cruddy team are going to have to spend close to 148 as well so those teams will HAVE to overspend. I suspect the cap ends up being less than 140 but there's no real information out there on what it will be.
