It is a very appealing chip/chipset but I have seen shit like this before.
My first build of my workstation had a defect on the Motherboard (TYAN S-2466) and they had to release a 2nd version of it.
It was due to a the USB controllers & the new AMD MP chips.

I'm just hoping AMD's Bobcat & Bulldozer go off without a hitch.

I wonder how many folks got burned with those combo's they were selling at Microcenter.... They were selling Gigabyte Mobo's with I7-2600K's dirt cheap until that lil thing with the 1155 chipset came up..

Unless there's a quantum leap in performance chips and/or mobo at a good price, I'm probably gonna just do incremental upgrades going forward. Videocard, PSU, yanno, small stuff. No more major builds I think as in the next 3 years or so, I'll probably have a tablet anyway..

Even if they did get burned, the mfg. offered a fix/replacement.

More specs coming in on AMD's new bitch. The Chipset looks promising especially for a workstation build.

I have been waiting for an all SATA III Board w/native USB3.0 support. With a couple of SSD's it's exactly what we need for a production workstation.

According to x-bit labs, AMD is planning to ship its first Bulldozer architecture desktop processors in June.
Deliveries to stores are said to be planned for the week of June 20th. This desktop version, code name Zambezi, is reported to be coming onto the market in three ranges:

    - FX 8000: 4 modules / 8 cores
    - FX 6000: 3 modules / 6 cores
    - FX 4000: 2 modules / 4 cores

In total, no fewer than 8 processors are set to be launched, 4 FX 8000s, 2 FX 6000s and 2 FX 4000s. The official launch may take place at the beginning of June at Computex in Taiwan.

Shipments of the Llano APU are likely to start only in the week of July 8th. The AMD ‘A’ APU range is reported to be made up of no fewer than eleven two and four core models.

    [IMG] Damnit! June/July!????
For that I wait a few more months Q3 2011 when Intel will also be releasing their LGA2011....

    It's either:
    i7 or Sandybridge Now
    Bulldozer in the summer
    or
    LGA2011 later on.

I think I'm gonna wait it out. I believe AMD will be releasing Quad channel memory based chips around Q3 also...

    I really wanted/need a build so yesterday....

    Yeah, I know.
I've always "jumped in @ some point" with technology in general,

But this is a different case because chipsets don't change every year. They last a few years so It's actually beneficial to wait for this slew of new ones to come out since they will also have an impact of the older chipsets.

On a side note, I recently moved my old rig to the basement to serve as a htpc. It connected flawlessly with my wireless router which is 2 stories above it. The Netgear WNDR 3700 is one powerful Router folks. I had almost full signal strength in the basement and was able to play Movies off my server which is wired (GbE) to the Router without any issues whatsoever. Streams are Mpeg2's with bit rates in the mid 6000kbps range and pretty decent quality. I could probably go higher but the media sharing s/w that comes embedded in the new DirecTV HD boxes can't handle much more than 6K.

If anyone is in the market for a new Wireless Router, I highly recommend the Netgear WNDR3700 v1

    My turn.

I am taking the 900W PSU and geforce GTX 465 out of my current tower, along with its harddrives, saves me having to transfer things.

That stuff considered, this is about a $1400 build.

Comments, questions, concerns, complaints, Soss bashing?

^ I like the components you've chosen Mantana. Just a question about the proc. Why not the 2600K? Also, are there any special cooling kits you're planning to add or going with stock? I'd really consider the Corsair H50 or H60 all in one water kits. Easy to install and work really really well. Lastly, are you considering turning the old box into a file server?

I decided hyperthreading wasn't worth the $100. How many programs out there will fully take advantage of 4 hyperthreaded cores?

Sandy Bridge as a whole is a few steps better than any other sub-$1000 chips.

As for cooling, unless/until I overclock, I'll be satisfied with the well-ventilated case I picked.

The old box is getting tossed. You should see what I have running this computer. It's a Dell XPS Minitower, which has an upgraded PSU and vid card jammed into it. Due to inevitable heat issues that followed, it's now a skeleton of a case. :breakdance:

ftr, i7's are still the best for a few reasons but for some the $1k is waaaay to much for just having the best.... I'll save you guys the specs but If you need me to just ask..

    2 things:

1- DVD burner. Yes a BR will do it but aorn they don't achieve the speeds at burning a DVD than an actuall DVD burner so I would have another drive just for DVD but I can understand if you want to save a few bux... (most are 16x vs 24x for DVD)
2- Heatsink. Again something you may not need now but if you plan on OC'ing or heavy multitasking it will help.

After many delays Bulldozer is finally released today.

I currently have a Bulldozer build ready to be ordered. Just going over a few specs and looking if the good outweights the bad...especially forward thinking.

So far for me, this is pretty much what I need and waiting for Ivybridge doesn't help me any aorn...

The initial Benches are NOT bad but aren't as good as they should be....
    Someone is pissed!

Finally decided on my Next Build...

After much deliberation I have painfully decided to nixay my Bulldozer build :(
Unfortunately I can't wait for AMD to get their ish in order.
The big thing is threaded applications... That should be fixed in Windows 8 but can't keep waiting.

My next build is a SandyBridge-E:

    MOBO MSI Big Bang-XPower II 128gb Ram, 4-PCIE 3.0, 6-SATAIII, 4-SATAII, IEEE1394

AORN, HDD Prices are very High due to the Flooding in Thailand So the HDD's I have are pretty much price driven right now.
Eventually I will add a couple of 10k Raptor drives... in raid of course :)

Can't hold out 2 months for Ivy Bridge? the 3770K, while only 4 core, has a TDP of 77W vs 130W for the 3930K. The same level cooling will allow significantly more overclock on the Ivy Bridge chips. That's what I'm going to be upgrading my 2500k to, though it's because I already forked out for a SATA3/PCIE3/Ivy Bridge compatible mobo.

SSDs have rendered Raptor drives and their inflated price obsolete. I love my 120GB SSD boot/game drive.
