We are not becoming a finesse based pass first team. As long as Ryan is here, we will remain ground and pound. You are reading too much into that presser. i want a team that can win a couple if our QB temporarily goes down. i also want a team that can smack around Brady, and Rivers, Peyton, Flacco, and Ben. Defense is what will elevate us past those teams. Sanchez and our O is at its best when we keep the games close.
Why are so many fans content with keeping games close? With a dominant defense and a high powered offense, we can beat the hell out of teams. I didn't say that we're going to become a finesse team, but we're definitely going to throw the ball more. Rex Ryan's not calling the plays - he just wants us to have a tough mentality. I can almost guarantee this team will start throwing the ball more and more as Sanchez progresses. Look at our backfield: Tomlinson is probably gone, Greene is injury prone, and McKnight is relatively unknown. We're not going to run the ball that much in 2011. We beat four of those guys with our current defense. Flacco sucks. I'm not reading into anything - I just know what the hell I'm talking about.
lol. yes i agree we will begin to throw more as we won't need to hide Sanchez as much. That doesn't mean we will go away from balance. i think you build teams in the northeast based on D. you think WR is the better route. We will see which direction the FO goes.
On a side note, great job by MT last year in locking up Mangold, Dbrick and Revis. Those were clearly our top 3 priorities. Could you imagine if we had to worry about any of them on top of this mess + the unknown collective bargaining situation? I'm confident MT will prioritize correctly again..
We didn't trade up to the 5th pick for a game manager. It was awesome that the Jets had the personnel to protect him while he went through his growing pains. The training wheels are coming off and he is going to become the best thing the Jets have going for them soon enough... which is exactly what Rex said he would become. I don't think he had running the ball 40 times a game in mind when he said that either.
Just because I want to keep the wideouts over an inside linebacker doesn't mean I want to completely forgot about the defense. Sign the receivers, go after an OLB and a DE in the draft, and bring in multiple role players through FA. We can upgrade the defense through free agency and the draft - we won't have to spend that much cash to do it either. Ryan knows how to get the best out of his players. He'll be able to bring in lesser-knowns and diamonds in the rough. It's what he does.
We will be throwing the ball more. Absolutely. It shouldn't have been the case this year, but Sanchez's playoff performance has shown its time for him to be the focal point of this team. He can get it done. His OL is 4/5 set. His strongside needs to be resolved but at least its not his blindside. That's protected be elite talent. He has 4 targets that he feels extremely comfortable with. If they can keep the entire offense intact, upgrade at RT, get RB depth (McKnight producing next year, which I can see happening), then the front 7 is the only issue. And that's where the draft comes in. If the team can get the 09 defense back, Sanchez will take care of the rest and they'll win a fucking SB.
I hear what you are saying regarding the ILB position. I agree that is a lot of money to lock up there. So i'll give you a scenario that doesn't involve Harris. Signing Holmes will be comparable money to signing Ngata or Woodley. All 3 are UFA. So Holmes and Edwards, or Edwards, a 3rd round pick, and 1 defensive FA stud (or even 2 lesser FA studs)? I'd go the second route, AND focus on D in the draft.
Haloti Ngata isn't going to be a free agent. I just saw a report less than ten minutes ago saying Baltimore will use their franchise tag on him. I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh did the same thing with LaMarr Woodley. I'd take Holmes and Edwards because they're going to make this team better over time - they are going to make Mark Sanchez an elite quarterback. You want us to draft a wideout in the third round? Name one that's worth getting rid of an elite player like Holmes. I know for a fact that you won't be able to do that. You know how I know that? ...because 2011's wideout class is weak outside of a few underclassmen and Leonard Hankerson. They'll all be gone by the end of the second round. We can get a pass rusher in the draft. Mangini's not running things anymore. I have faith in our front office and coaching staff: they'll bring in a player that can get after the quarterback.
I think Rex will find his Suggs this year. He'll know where to look. This front 7 needs a mean motherfucker. Maybe then they won't relax in the AFC chip game.
Who said that? You are still not hearing me. I'd use that pick on D or OT. I do not put emphasis on building my team thru the diva position. Maybe, but OLB is not easy to pick. Beal has looked terrible in senior bowl practices, and Shear has plenty of knocks on his motor. Kerrigan prob wont be there when we pick. Houston is a guy i'm high on based on what i've read. But it's not just about OLB. I've seen guys quick to dismiss Cro, Harris, Jenkins, Ellis. JT and BT may be gone as well. You cannot plug and play all of that. We need to re-sign some of them, pick up some others in FA even if not a high profile one, AND attack the draft with D picks. signing both WR's, even though i like them a lot, hurts our chances of doing this.
You get a Suggs with a high first round pick. Filling the OLB/pass rusher at 30 is going to be tough. Quinn, Aldon Smith,Ayers, Kerrigan, Miller are all long gone by the time the Jets pick. Maybe Houston becomes the pass rusher; maybe Beal (who when I've watched is almost always playing down) becomes it as well. But our expectations for this pick are really just out of control.
I have never, ever called him Suckchez. I would be embarassed to ever say or type that. I have said he is not that great and should be benched, when he has sucked during games. And, I have said he is not yet a franchise qb. As for wr's, they are important to every team. But, all but about 5-8 guys are easily replaceable. And I dont think Tone or BE are in that range.
Not necessarily... Clay Matthews with 26th overall. James Harrison and Cameron Wake didn't even get drafted. Shaun Phillips went in the 4th round. LaMarr Woodley went in the middle of the second round.
Oh really? Look at these gems I found in some game threads: (It turns out a bigger idiot, throwtheball, was the one that said "suckchez". ...but afte reading this shit, you've become TakeMeHomeKerryRhodes' biggest rival.
True but it's very, very hard to get a great pass rusher any place after 15 in the draft. It does happen but you've got to get really lucky.
You need to be a little bit more optimistic. We've got a great chance at landing a good 3-4 OLB prospect.
If you say so. We all know what we hope happens when the Jets pick, but it's a hope, not a plan, to get a OLB at 30 in the draft who can replace Thomas as a rookie.
