That's great but we have about five other threads dedicated to the expensive franchise players. This thread is to dig deeper to find the diamonds in the rough that will play for cheap.
really eh? I haven't seen anything on any of the players I mentioned.....care to link me? I don't want to exfoliate your thread anymore than I already have.
free agent thread who get's franchised who stays and who goes how do we reload the defense The list goes on and on and we always end up talking about Ngata, Woodley, and Aso. You are more than welcome to participate, I am just asking that you stay on topic.
We have one Vernon Gholston at OLB and that's one too many already. Another one at NT? I don't think so...
Alan Branch would probably be a big end if he signed with us. He's actually very good against the run and he's got great: 6'6 338. If the Jets were able to get him for an inexpensive contract, I'd be all for it. Gholston won't be a NYJ in 2011. We can hopefully stop using that comparison on players that underachieve.
The guy was always buried on the depth chart. He had 4.5 sacks for the Chargers last year in 11 games, none of which he was a starter. Not saying this guy is going to be setting any sack records, but he could be good for 7-8 sacks a year in our system. And shouldnt have a hard time outperforming BT JT or even Pace.
Huh? I remember him from NC State. He was very highly rated coming into the NFL, but in 5 seasons has all of 14.5 sacks and only 187 tackles. Abiamiri has had only 20 tackles and 4 sacks in 3 years. No to both. Wimbley's numbers are better than the two of theirs combined.
Someone will overpay him because he's got incredibly speed/athleticism for a guy his size. Calvin Pace got a huge contract mainly because of his measurables. I don't want Lawson near this team if he's going to demand big money.
Agreed on the big money. I haven't followed his career at all. I'm not doubting you, but if he has such great speed and athleticism, why aren't his numbers better? I know that SF hasn't been very good, but it looks like he would have had a lot of opportunities to rack up some stats the way Alex Smith and other SF QBs have turned the ball over, and other teams have beaten them. Didn't Pace also get that contract because he had just had the best year of his career?
Yes, but also Karlos Dansby was a big prize to be had before he got tagged. Teams chasing Dansby had to settle for Pace.
I think he'd be a rotational end if he came here. Height can actually work against you at the nose tackle position.
I'd love to bring in Lance Moore, that kid is a baller and could help us in many ways. Not as versatile as Smith but a better WR overall with damn good hands.
So what? If we brought any of those guys in they'd add much needed speed to the OLB rotation. Seeing how we can't spend top dollar on other FAs, I'd like to see us take a flier on guys like Abiamiri, Gocong, Lawson (I don't think he'll get an outrageous deal) or Wimbley. Were not going to get any house-hold names. I'm starting to think someone will overpay for Wimbley though.
I can't see how anyone can be disappointed in Pouha. I agree with you though, we need a rotation to keep guys fresh. I'm pretty sure this will be a point of emphasis considering the lack of pass rush story all last year.
Franklin would be an incredible addition to our defense. He is an excellent penetrating NT, and he is probably one of the top 3 3-4 Nose tackles in football right now. It's hard to be noticed though when you're in the trenches and guys like Pat Willis are running around making plays. @MBGreen: Even though Franklin was not mentioned much, he still had a strong year. It just so happened that Justin Smith played at a very high level, and he outshone Franklin and Sopoaga with his Pro-Bowl caliber play. Soliai is not the player Franklin is, but he is still a good NT. I would not be upset if he was signed (assuming Franklin was unavailable). The most intriguing (and IMO, the best) safety on the free agent market is Eric Weddle. Rivera didn't use him much on the line as a run-stuffer, but he is a strong, sure tackler, especially in the open field, and willing in run support. He is also strong in coverage and route-recognition, and if you watched him this year you saw a safety making a lot of plays. He does everything well, plus he has experience covering slot receivers. He doesn't get a lot of press (except for the one game where he picked Peyton twice), but he is a seriously underrated safety. I doubt that San Diego would let him go, but if they do he would be a huge pickup. EDIT: I just noticed that Mikell is also going to be a free agent. I don't think he'll hit the market, but he would jump Weddle for hopeful signings if he did. I believe Mikell led all safeties with pass breakups, plus he is really good in run support. He also plays in a blitz-heavy scheme.
I was thinking about Cullen Jenkins all year. You know Kris has his ear. We all expect Kris to rework his deal, and Cullen is making $4.6 million now. I think we can maybe split the difference and keep them both. They're injury prone, but I'm sure Kris would love to retire after winning one with his bro. Guys like Jacques Cesaire could be a good filler for the vet minimum. Depending on what we do with Ellis, how much he is looking for.
