And I hope Woody thinks of it in terms of real savings, rather than cap savings.

It's funny-in the renegotiation they gave him a 9 million bonus if he got a sack,a fumble recovery, or certain playing time targets-which was supposed to be an easy target for him to reach, and the Jets would probaly have let him become a free agent unless he played incredibly well-but he failed to reach those modest targets.

I'm sure they look at it as both.

Is Gholston worth 400k of cap space? Actually, he probably is. That's not too bad for an end of the roster guy who knows the system and has, say, a one in twenty chance of just busting out.

Is Gholston worth 2.5 million real money more than some UDFA LB out of the SEC? Probably not.

They also tried to get him a sack against the Bills the last week of the season. Bonus fail.

    Possible savings:
Sanchez's cap numbers based on the site provided on page 1: 2011- 17.75 million, 2012- 14.25 million, 2013- 8 million. I can easily see us taking around 5 million off of his 2011 and put it on 2013.
Jenkins can and probably will restructure to a more incentive based salary save probably around 3 million.
Pace should restructure, but he has all the power too much dead money.
Bryan Thomas will be asked to restructure as well or be shown the door. Save 3.7 million
JT is gone. Save 2.25 million
Hartsock can be replaced easily. Save 1.65 million
Mark Brunell is more than likely gone, bring him back as a coach. Save 1.3 million
So I think 17 million is reasonable, Hopefully more with a Pace restructure.
My guess based on past cap values the salary cap will be around 142 million. We currently are at about 122 million, so after -17 million we are at 105 million. So around 37 million leeway. Bringing back some players such as ellis, turner, and other min salary depth probably around 13 million so that leaves us at around 24 million. Harris will want a contract similar to carlos dansby (5 year 43 million) probably around 7 million. So 17 million, Holmes and Edwards a combined 14 million. So 3 million left. Will Cromartie sign for 3 million????

    I like the math.

I think Cro may take a the first year salary at 3 mil only if there is a big roster bonus behind it next season, or if there is a big signing bonus with his cap number at 3 mil.

it'll be an interesting offseason, but the way this hypothetical goes, it makes room for all the important FAs, but rookies need to be signed as well.

Don't forget the added 400k for cutting Gholston

my guess is we hope a player falls and a team trade up and gets us a few draft picks. By trading out of the first round we save coin and get another player.

as for gholston, the money saved by cutting isn't that much. To a normal person 400k is a lot of money, but if the cap is around 140 million that is just over a quarter percent (.00285). I am not saying I much faith if any left in him. But one thing I know Rex is the coach I would have the most faith in him to do anything.

That's been my thinking as well. There are prospects at the 33-45 range that will be a big help to this team. Either DL or OLB.

This will be the most interesting offseason in a while.

I'm more along the lines thinking a cheap FA or a low round draftee can be a backup DL to set the edge on runs and get more pressure than he can. That FA/draftee has much more upside. I think he's hit his ceiling.
