Since we've talked ad nauseum about missed tackles, I was wondering if any of our crack stat experts could tell us the following: (1) How many missed tackles is normal for the Jets D in an average game ? (2) Hoe many missed tackles in a BAD game for Jets D ? (3) How many missed tackles last night ?
Cimini Speaks: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/ After a thorough breakdown of the game tape by ESPNNewYork.com, it was determined that the New York Jets missed 11 tackles in the AFC Championship Game -- all in the first half. Those missed tackles allowed the Pittsburgh Steelers to gain 105 yards after initial contact, nearly half of their first-half output (231 total yards). No team should miss 11 tackles in a game, let alone a half -- let alone in a title game. Why? Everybody's favorite reason was the lack of intensity; several players acknowledged the team came out flat. The Steelers also hammered the Jets with a three-tight end package, using two tight ends in the backfield with RB Rashard Mendenhall. In the second quarter, the Steelers changed it up, gashing the Jets for two big runs in nickel personnel -- a 35-yard run by Mendenhall (David Harris missed him after two yards) and a 13-yard run by Isaac Redman (misses by Sione Pouha and Eric Smith). Bart (Can't Wait) Scott played one of his worst games as a Jet. Not only did he miss four tackles, but he took a false step on Ben Roethlisberger's next-to-last completion -- the 14-yarder to Heath Miller. Scott came free on a blitz, but bit inside on the play fake, allowing Roethlisberger to break outside to his right. It bought Big Ben an extra second to complete the throw. Here's an unofficial breakdown of the players that missed tackles and the amount of extra yards that resulted: LB Bart Scott -- 4 for 22 yards (including Mendenhall's 1-yard TD run) NT Sione Pouha -- 3 for 20 yards LB David Harris -- 1 for 33 yards S Brodney Pool -- 1 for 17 yards (on a pass play) DT Trevor Pryce -- 1 for 6 yards. S Eric Smith -- 1 for 7 yards Totals: 11 for 105 yards
I missed a tackle on some beaver after the loss on Sunday but the chick said she hated the jets and that football was stupid. Her Erika badu looking hipster black friend cockblocked me so I bounced and smoked some weed.
Remember Drew Coleman's missed tackle his rookie year? You think that Bill made it back to Buffalo yet?
I didn't keep or follow statistics, but it seemed to me that over the last 2 seasons the Jets rarely missed tackles. Through bad defensive games and good defensive games, they never missed tackles, which is more than I can say for past teams. That's one thing I noticed. On these boards, there were all kinds of debates about the D, but one thing always stuck out in my mind and that was that the Rex Ryan Jets don't miss tackles....until this game.
Actually, they've never been bad at tackling, even in the Kotite years. The "D" actually had trouble earlier this year leading up to the NE game. That's when Rex said 'back to basics.' They had zero missed tackles in the 2nd half. That tells you how bad they were in the 1st half. The Pitt OL wasn't blowing the Jets off the line of scrimmage 2-3 yards....the Jets were mostly in the backfield and just missed. I have no explanation why, considering they faced this runner 5 weeks ago.
Tackling won't be an issue on this team, that half of football was an abberation and uncharacteristic. It's unfortunate that it happened at such a critical time.
Never, huh? I seem to remember the Raiders running 10 straight times up the field and scoring on a Ted Cottrell defense in the early part of the last decade.
It seems that they didn't know what was at stake: http://m.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/revis_jets_relaxed_in_loss_to_steelers_Hiwku7DG5eIAXGul8wiQwL
I don't think that was so much bad tackling as the fact that we didnt touch a raider runningback until they were 3 yards down field. and I believe it was 20 straight runs down our throats...
It's making me sick all over again to hear about the team lacking intensity and coming out flat in the AFC Championship Game. "You can kind of see guys just relaxed" says Revis. Why the hell wasn't this addressed by veteran players and/or coaches in the days before this game? What the hell happened out there? Did this team just sleepwalk it's way out of the Super Bowl? This really pisses me off. How many times do these players think they're going to be one game away from the Super Bowl?
I was screaming like a mad man in my living room over the missed tackles. I can't remember ever seeing such poor tackling from any NFL team to be honest. Such a letdown.
That defense couldn't tackle anything.. When Donnie Henderson came in they figured out how to tackle.
I'm talking about over the course of a year.....they had 3 bad tackling games this year (Cincy, NE, Pitt)...would you say it was a problem ALL year ? To be a problem all year it has to be present in close to or more than half the games.
When Herm was here with Ted Cotrel There would be an insane amount of missed tackles.... Week after week after being asked about it.. Herm would naturally just babble some crap... This was the precise time when I realizwed herm Edwards was a babbling idiot and never answered the question because he had no clue at all - And why should he, the highest he ever coached was DB's.... He and ted talked about being out of position and communication... the Defense was trying to run a 4-3 with ted a 3-4 coach and not enough 3-4 personel. From Wiki: Notice how Herm hired an "innovator of the 3-4 to coach 4-3" I STILL BANG MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL............... Considered an innovator in the 3-4 defense, Cottrell was an assistant coach for the Buffalo Bills from 1995-00, the last three seasons as defensive coordinator. From 1998 through 2000, the Bills finished no worse than sixth in the league in total defense. In 1999, the Bills led the league in total defense. In 2001, he joined the New York Jets as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, and operated the 4-3 scheme favored by head coach Herman Edwards. He stayed for three seasons.
i am sure all the right things were said, but you can't manufacture emotion and intensity.you can talk it up al you want but if its not there its not there
Over the course of this past season, I agree with you. But to say that they haven't had a bad tackling season since before the Kotite years is kind of ignorant.
Yeah, those Ted Cottrell defenses were awful. I remember tackling being terrible for the first 6 games, then they'd "gel" and actually stop opposing offenses, then break down again in the playoffs. The most frustrating defense ever.
I take your point, but if it wasn't there for the AFC championship game we need a lot of new players.
