I think it was earlier in the season where one of the Offensive players explained how they approach the beginning of games. Don't remember if it was Braylon or Cotchery, but they basically said Schotty scripts the first 20 plays which then gives him a "feel" for what the defense is gonna do. Then they make adjustments based on that. If true, this is the reason why we stink in the 1st quarter. The plan is etched in stone, so we really have no element of surprise or sense of urgency to score early. An indictment of Schotty if I ever saw one.
Yea, that's a pretty standard practice in the NFL. That's a hilarious conclusion that it's an indictment on Schotty though.
Schotty needs to go bring in an advisor, an old school, proven OC to help improve his weaknesses and tendencies. And I don't mean Marty. The guy has to be 100% neutral and impartial.
I always need to laugh when I see 3 #1 wr's, HOF RB, best backup RB in the league. First that is overrating our players. Cotchery is a very good number two and a great number 3 but he isn't a number 1. Greene is a solid player but only Jets fans have him as the best #2 in the league. Then we get into leaving out the most important part of the equation... the QB. Love Sanchez and he is definitely our franchise guy but he did about what I, and many others, expected out of him this year. When you have a QB who is limited in what he can do it doesn't matter how great the WR's are because he can't always get them the ball. I keep saying in every kill Schotty argument that as Sanchez progresses we will see a lot of the offenses issues go away. My way takes patience and I know that sucks but you need to look at how Sanchez is playing before you just decide Schotty sucks. It's not like we haven't seen Sanchez miss throws he makes the rest of the game in the 1st quarter of these games.
Sanchez is not he reason we run our 2nd best, older RB up the gut 75% of the time. Sanchez has nothing to do with why we seem to forget there is a part of the field between the TE and the sideline we can run to. Sanchez is not the reason we neglected the run and passed too much on 2nd down for 3/4th of the season. All I see is you defending Schotty on this board, it's kinda sickening because all the evidence is right in front of our faces.
How is it hilarious? It might be somewhat standard, but if it's not working for you, why continue doing that? If I kept on repeating the same mistakes and expected different results, people would call me stupid or even crazy. God forbid we suggest Schotty change it up every now and then. The only time I saw adjustments was after the Miami game when he was on the level of a pop warner coordinator.
It's hilarious because you said that his approach of scripting the first 20 plays and adjusting to the defense was an indictment on him. That's what a lot of OC's do and have been doing since Bill Walsh. Was it an indictment on Bill Walsh? The script is specific to the opponent, it's not like he runs the same 20 plays to start every game. I love how you're now trying to twist your argument. You seem like just another example of someone following the witch hunt. You're bitching about something you obviously have no clue about.
I defend him against extreme cases like you. There are plenty of people who can criticize him for the things he should be criticized for without blaming him for everything that goes wrong with the team. So far the only thing that I have seen you say that I think is worthy criticism is they passed too much on 2nd down for 3/4th of the season. Everything else... not so much. It is sickening to me that we can all agree that Rex is a good coach but then totally disregard his opinion of Schotty. I think he has a better idea of why the offense sputters than you or I do. But I guess all you armchair OC's have it all figured out from your meticulous viewing of broadcast t.v. angles.
I agree about some people overrating our players. But i disagree about basically blaming Sanchez being inexperienced and a growing player as the reason Shotty's offense can't be as potent as it could potentially be. Was that the excuse when Pennington and Favre were both here and performed below their career standards and then both had MVP-calibre seasons the year after they left Shotty's offense?
Bottom line Schotty is the offensive coordinator. There is no excuse fathomable that would justify not being able to score an offensive touchdown since Monday night in our stadium vs Brett Favre and the Vikings. Just think about that.
Pennington had an MVP caliber year with the Dolphins? The Brett Favre argument is always a tricky one because he came into an offense he had never run before a month before the season started and basically said he had no interest in learning it. Schotty changed the offense to jive with what Favre wanted and the offense was very good until Favre started throwing lame ducks after the first 11 weeks. I am also not blaming Sanchez for the offense not being as good as expected. I am blaming people not taking into account that he isn't a top QB yet when evaluating the offense. I know I am pleased with his overall play and development this season. I wouldn't have expected much more out of him his this year, so how could I expect much more from the offense when the QB makes the whole thing go?
It doesn't mean we are always playing from behind. week 5: up 3-0 after 1, up 9-0 at half week 6: up 7-0 in 2nd week 7: bye week 8: down 3-0 in 1st and at half week 9: down 7-0 in 1st, up 10-7 at half. week 10: down 3-0 in 1st, tied 3-3 in 1st. Led 17-13 at half week 11: up 3-0 in 1st qtr, 13-7 at half week 12: no score after 1, led 3-0 in 2nd -trailed 7-3 at the half week 13: down 17-0 in 1st week 14: down 10-0 in 1st week 15: up 7-0 after 1, tied at 10 at half week 16: down 10-0 in 1st, up 24-17 at half week 17: up 3-0 after 1, 17-0 at half WC: down 7-0 in 2nd div: down 3-0 in 1st, up 14-3 at half. Champ: down 7-0 in 1st, 24-3 at half. We weren't consistently down despite not scoring early in games. In only really hurt us maybe a game or 2. It does need to be addressed but we weren't always playing from behind.
Chad was hurt here in 2007 and we got Favre a month before the season and he was in a new offense. How did Brett do this past season?
Well the thing is when a lot of other coaches script those plays to start the game, they work because they know exactly how they want to exploit the defense before the defense has a chance to adjust to them. I know Mike Holmgren always scripted the first 15 plays or so and he had great success doing so. The problem isn't that he scripts the first 10, 15, 20, or however many plays.. it's that those plays rarely work and don't show that he can scout a defense, find their holes, and exploit them until he's in the flow of the game. He's actually very good at adjusting mid-game.. but you really put yourself behind the 8 ball when you have to play from behind every week. And for the record, I rarely have a problem with Shotty's actual play-calls, the goalline series notwithstanding. My bigger problem is that the offense often looks unprepared to start games and I feel like he tries to come up with genius plans that outsmart everyone, before falling back on their bread and butter plays. The fact that the offense has their worst games when he has extra time to prepare doesn't help things. Firing him at this point would be counter-productive, however, and is a moot point since it is clear he will be back.
This is also true. He does need to be held accountable for the slow starts. We all know Sanchez starts out shaky and gets better as the game goes on. It is his job to lessen the blow of the shaky starts by giving him plays that will allow him to get into the flow of the game easier. He didn't do that well this year. Hopefully next year that job will be easier because Sanchez won't have the beginning of the game issues he had this year. Or, even better, they can both improve on this weakness and help each other out. That would be something to see.
NICE!!!!!! Schotty was a douche OC when he had Farve too. The nerve of him planning and calling plays to score 56 points against the Cardinals and laying 45 on the Rams. What a terrible game plan he had. And Then being forced to use an injured QB when he started tanking. Fire Schotty!!!1111!1!11!! And imagine trying to find out how a defense reacts to offensive play-calling! Why that would mean slow starts and the ability to change your offensive play-calling to counter the defense' moves! He must go now....
